Town Confirm Coke Signing
Monday, 3rd Aug 2015 17:44

Town have confirmed the signing of former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Giles Coke on a two-year deal with an option for a further season. Coke, 29, has been on trial with the Blues for the last week and played in the friendlies against Peterborough, Colchester and FC Utrecht.

Speaking after Saturday’s game manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that Coke had been offered terms, adding: “I knew Cokey anyway but he’s fitted in well and he’s another good person, a good bloke.

“He’s fitted into the dressing room and the lads like him. I’ve been really pleased with him.”

Coke told Ipswich Player HD that he's aware he has a fight on his hands to get into the side at Town: “I know it’s going to be tough to get in the team because there are so many really good players here but I’m ready for the challenge.

“The team went so close last season and there is a really good feel about the dressing-room.

“You can tell the togetherness that exists between the players. That counts for so much and it can make all the difference.

“The Championship is such a tight league and that team spirit can make that extra one or two per cent. There is a great buzz about the place. You can pick that out.

“Everyone here wants the club to be successful and I believe we can do something this year.”

The Westminster-born midfielder, who will wear the Town number 16 shirt, played youth football with QPR before moving on to Kingstonian, Mansfield, Northampton and Motherwell before joining the Owls in 2010.

While with Wednesday Coke spent time on loan at Bury, Swindon and towards the end of last season Bolton. He was released in the summer and was on trial with Blackburn prior to joining up with the Blues.

Meanwhile, Town's U21s lost 2-0 in a friendly at Norwich this afternoon, Josh Murphy netting both goals.

Welcome and good luck, but with Douglas signing (a miles better player), not sure where he fits in now? Douglas and Skuse will start?

Surprised this wasn't a 1 year deal with the option of an extra year like the other two. Purely age related I guess. Still welcome aboard. Do well.

Got some stick from Wednesday fans that he's the worst player on their squad. I referenced the likes of Chambers, Skuse, McGoldrick and Murphy being described similarly. He will be a good squad player and he's a big, stocky lad who likes to drive forward and isn't afraid of a tackle from what I've seen. Will be useful if only used infrequently.

Why?

I can see an argument that he should be signed on a six month deal to cover for Hyam, but, otherwise, where are we going with this? He is mediocre and given his age will just block the route for our youngsters.

We've got players now who will be picked on merit as opposed to just because they are here ,think of last season , hunt tabb in midfield now a whole host of options.

I thought he'd get a one year contract, but Mick must see something in him to offer two. He hasn't had a glamorous career, but hopefully Ipswich is the right home for him so he will be a good squad player and can push for a first team place.

IpswichBusiness, you're failing to see that experienced and older players who play in the positions of those such as Bishop are required not only as a valuable member of the squad, but also to act as mentors to the younger players on and off the pitch and also keep them on their toes in training, continually pushing them.

Also, still riles me that 33 is considered old by so many people. I'm 35 and I'd bet my youngest child I'd run the socks off a great number of 'kids' 10 years my junior.

Other than it taking a day longer to recover than when I was 25!

Nutrition and conditioning are a million miles away from what it was like 20 years ago.

A decent, solid midfielder who, whilst perhaps not the first name on the teamsheet, will be useful to bring on late in games to add experience and close games out.

Don't forget that Bishop didn't play a full 90 minutes until fairly late on last season. Fraser only made 11 starts and 16 sub appearances for Bournemouth last season and Miles-Naitland is only 17. These players won't be playing 90 minutes week in week out in the Championship this season, e.g. our first 6 games (including cup) being played in the space of just 22 days.

Have a feeling Coke will suprise quite a few!! He is better than Hyam, Who I think will find it hard to get back in the team when he returns from injury. Coke can do the same job as Hyam, but is a better footballer. Welcome Giles, I'm sure you'll be a decent player for us!!

I love how everyone that comes in always talks about the great spirit at the club, for me this is vital for us. We don't have as much quality as Derby for example however look at how we competed last year. Didn't lose to either of the top 2 took 3 off boro and 4 off Brentford. These teams had more quality but our spirit pulled us through. I believe now we have more quality as well as keeping the team spirit, I think we're in for a cracker this year just like the last!

Does anyone know whether Town receive any of the fee from Wickham joining Palace?

The Wickham fee is eat 9 mill total with somewhere between 6 to 7 up front I belive. We only get 20% of any sale that is a profit so unless he triggers the add on clauses to take the fee above the 8.1 mil they paid we get nothing.

I think that's right

Welcome aboard. Coke has looked decent in pre season and a lot better player than some give him credit for. People moaned when we signed Varney, Hunt, and our hero of the hour at Watford Chaplow. They didn't turn out too bad now did they?

Welcome Giles, I have been impressed with you during pre-season, certainly in the MM mold that could see Skuse as the right back?
