New Defender McCarthy's Priority
Thursday, 6th Aug 2015 14:41

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that he’d still like to add to his squad with a versatile defender his priority. The Blues are understood to have made two unsuccessful bids for 19-year-old Hearts right-back or centre-half Jordan McGhee.

“I would like to strengthen further,” McCarthy said. “We’re a bit thin on the ground with defenders, to be honest with you.

"So if I could get a versatile defender from somewhere who could play left-back and centre-half or right-back and centre-half, who can cover a couple of positions, that’s something I’d be looking for."

The Blues, who have added Giles Coke, Jonathan Douglas and Larsen Touré to their squad this week, are reported to have made bids of up to £250,000 for Scotland U21 international skipper McGhee with a third offer expected. Hearts are said to be looking for a fee of around £500,000.

But McCarthy wouldn’t be drawn on his interest in the defender: “He’s somebody else’s player and I won’t talk about that.”

Given Emmanuel's youth and potential and the fact we have a LB replacement for Mings, and we have Parr who can play either side, surely this guy is not the priority, signing an experienced RB is. Parr's injury is a concern, so all the more need for cover.

Parhamblue - Sadly i think Parr's Injury record is going to be a consistent issue, as much as I dont like to admit it, Parr is in my books more the cover type player

As I've said before, get the bid in, spend the cash if needs be. He'll only increase in value with Mick showing him the ropes. Fantastic business done this summer, Mick. Can't wait to get down to Portman Road.

For gods sake pay the asking fee anybody would think it was five million they are asking if he is what we need stop digging your heels in get the deal done before we regret it with dropped points we got treble what Mings was worth in reality whats the problem?

FFs just buy him!! We have 8mill sat in the bank and we are umming and arring over 250k! Thats nothing for a 22 year old promising player. Tight as a ducks arse...

BlueNomad added 15:36 - Aug 6
Oh I agree batty and toxteth. We have loads of money lying around and so far our new signings have cost nothing in signing on fees, agents fees, loan fees etc. That £8m must still be untouched!

If we don't get this deal done soon Leeds will swoop in and sign him for the asking fee as they usually do.

If MM is considering the free transfer market list is here:

Why a versatile defender? We have 2 left backs, 4 centre halves, 3 of them being some of the best in the league!! We need a proper right back. All hes after is an excuse to keep playing Chambers there so he doesnt have to drop Smith. I agree with most of what u do Mick but this right back issue is really beginning to p**s me off. Chambers and Berra are our best and most balanced pairing. Anyone with 2 eyes can see that. Now get a right back in and play him there. Stop handicapping us by exposing Chambers

Toxtethblue - we don't have 8m just sitting in the bank, even signing out of contract players and frees costs money.

Also, McGhee is 19 as stated, not 22.
I'd rather we pay the right figure rather than overpay, a high price doesn't guarantee quality. Look at Priskin.

If we pay the asking price: other clubs will also expect us to pay the asking price. It's a delicate negotiation process just like buying a house. We shoul offer 400,000 and get the deal done and dusted soon.

Right-back badly needed. Alan Judge will make mincemeat out of Emmanuel- he's simply not yet ready.

Fiddling while Rome Burns, please tell Emperor McCarthy to get his finger out of his ar..to use Micks turn of phrase!!!
Agree with most on here that we could lose out if haggling over £250k;but our Manager is a canny so and so,and it could be that this is just a red herring, and he ends up with somebody else. You never know with the greatest living yorkshireman?

Right age with some experience, £500000 is a very reasonable asking price given his potential who's value would at least double if he becomes a regular in the team, for the sake of £250000 only a fool would haggle over such a small difference & risk losing the player to some one else, then end up making do with someones cast off just for being pig headed!

Maybe MM should start a rumor that he's interested in Guirane N'Daw and about to put in a 1million bid. Leeds will swoop in and waste their time and money whilst we finally sign this guy for a decent price.

It baffles me how in the last four or five years we've been so unbelievably successful in recruiting left-backs, yet right-backs seem to have proved a real problem. Are there no right-footed Jonas Knudsens out there????!
2

GiveusaWave added 16:28 - Aug 6
ThatMuhrenCross.

Funnily enough there is. Mikael Jacobsen (from the same club as Knudsen) looks the real deal. I looked up a few of Knudsens games when he looked like signing and though Knudsen looked very good this guy looked excellent. Also capped for Denmark and would have helped Knudsen to settle in easily. Valued at 500,000 so is certainly within price range. Don't know why MM didn't look into this possibility as the guy is a natural right back. Passes the ball well too and has good vision.

Come on guys please... You're living up the embarrassing memory of Ipswich town members throwing tenners around when Marcus Evans joined...

we do NOT have millions to spend... Yes we received 8 million for Mings but we have 80 million debt and our wage structure (which has improved) takes us to the brink of the FFP rules.

Saying that I do think we should pay the 500K for this lad.... Hearts local paper and SPL news claim he will be worth 5+ million in 2 - 3 years = Cressy, Mings etc.

We've done well this year, Mick wants this lad but is obviously under financial constraint!

The Swedish defender Sebastian Holmen is another player I would recommend, but no idea of his market value.

This Club is £80m in debt so we hardly have loads of money swimming around. We lose money almost every year so why should we throw it away if our Manager/Owner do not think a player is worth the asking price.

"Don't know why MM didn't look into this possibility,"

Maybe because he only looks at players that are put his way by an agent or because they are not wanted or are offered as part of an exchange deal (Mings). ? Have we seen any players at PR that his scouts have unearthed that he didn't already know or that wasn't put his way by someone else! other than the young lads from Ireland.

we needed a new right back in January when it was obvious chambers was being targeted by opposition left midfield players and channel running strikers doubling up on him. It was a pattern that meant he was always level with Berra as opposed to being over the half way line when we had the ball ,offensively he is no threat to who ever we play. He needs to be what he is a centre half. So we are after someone who can operate at the back in general , i don't believe this , i believe we are after a full on right back . MMs no mug ,he will no exactly that ,despite his generic cover at back comments. Hardly wants to make it clear to chambers smith berra that change is going to happen so close to kick off. Expect a signing tomorrow.

It's been a priority for 3 months. Strange it hasn't been addressed. We have added numerous similar midfield options in previous weeks. Coke and Douglas similar. But no defenders! It seems like an error in my opinion.
