Clarke on Winning Side in First League Start
Sunday, 9th Aug 2015 17:04

On-loan defender Matt Clarke made his first league start as Portsmouth beat Dagenham and Redbridge 3-0 at Fratton Park yesterday.

Clarke, 18, played the full 90 minutes for the League Two side, with whom he is on loan until January.

The centre-half or midfielder made one Capital One Cup start and four Championship sub appearances for Town last season.

Former Town keeper Brian Murphy also made his Pompey debut having signed the day before the match, while ex-Blues winger Gary Roberts made his bow for the Hampshire side having joined from Chesterfield over the summer.

Elsewhere, Blues target Jordan McGhee was an unused sub as Hearts won 2-1 at Dundee in the SPL.

Good news. This move will do him no harm. Clean sheet already, so great start.

Good lad. Think he still has a big future for us and it'll be great to play competitive football every week for a year or two. Interesting to see McGhee was an unused sub. Is he normally a first teamer? Could be unused so he doesn't fail a medical perhaps...

I know we can't recall him, but can we do a swap, they can have Smith for the season and we get Clarke back?

The loan deal includes a recall clause.

What position did he play?

Centre-half, think he's unlikely to play elsewhere, to be honest, although was viewed as a midfielder for the most part in the academy.

Needs to be left to get on with it. Portsmouth are a great club, with excellent facilities. He'll benefit a huge amount from being a regular first-teamer there. In my eyes, I'd be happy for him to go and spend the whole season there, so long as he continues to get games.
