McCarthy: Young Full-Backs Could Go Out on Loan
Tuesday, 18th Aug 2015 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says young full-backs Josh Emmanuel and Myles Kenlock could go out on loan to gain first-team experience. The Blues already have 18-year-old centre-half Matt Clarke out on loan at Portsmouth and impressing in League Two.

Emmanuel (above) - who was 18 on Saturday - made his first-team debut in the 2-2 opening day draw at Brentford, while Kenlock made his first senior appearance in the 2-1 Capital One Cup win against Stevenage last Tuesday.

“I spoke to Josh Emmanuel today,” McCarthy said at yesterday’s pre-match press conference.

“I said to him that he must be disappointed [not to have played on Saturday] but that he must also have known what was going to happen - Chambo’s my captain and he was always going to play, that was never in doubt. The back four was never going to be in doubt.

“And the same for Myles Kenlock (below). I thought he was excellent on the day and I’m sure if he plays again in the cup, people will be looking [at him with a view to taking him on loan] and he’ll be better than a lot of players other clubs have got, certainly lower down the leagues, and Josh will as well.

“If we can get them some game time in the league it would be great for them. Clarkey is doing really well, they’re delighted with him.”

Keeper Michael Crowe and another full-back, Kyle Hammond, are other young players McCarthy might look to get out on loan to gain senior experience.

Meanwhile, the Town manager says he’s received no interest in winger Cameron Stewart, who he made available for transfer earlier in the summer: “Not as yet, nobody’s contacted me about him.”

Good for both of them to get experience. They are both at least league one standard

Hopefully this suggests cover for the defensive line is due in. It would be daft otherwise

So you are going to continue to play Chambers at RB then Mick ??? Then we are in big trouble !!! He gets mugged every time he plays against a good winger and one foot smith can't cover him at RCB. We have struggled at RB for 3 seasons and it's not been addressed. Dear oh dear Mick !!!!!

Presumably we will be signing some experienced cover first. Parr too injury prone to be relied on exclusively, which means just one injury or suspension and we are back to having only three senior defenders.

It must be pretty frustrating for Emmanuel to be in the first team, considered to have put in an excellent performance, potentially giving the back four more balance then being told he will go out on loan. Is Mick basically saying even if Emmanuel was on the bench he wouldn't get any time.
It makes sense that he can't just displace the other players ahead of him after one good performance, and I would agree if it weren't for the fact that we play three center backs in out back four!

I assume that we will be wise enough to have a recall clause built in (as with Matt Clarke). Then if these players are needed we have them 'ready to go' rather being ring rusty.

He could always rotate Chambers with Smith at RB/CB :))
We will get promoted eventually, and when we do there should be some fine academy products still in the club. McGhee is another for the future, if he signs and looking expensive by our standards, but he's not the experienced cover we need this season.

As much as Emmanuel is great cover, I feel Mick is right looking to give him a load, reason being is Brentford targeted him a lot, and other teams may also try to exploit his inexperience. Provided we get the cover we need (not entering the Chambers at right back discussion, that's beyond boring now) for our defensive line, this is a good move for both club and player(s)

MICK MCARTHY you should always pick the best team not error prone favorites, bad management sending out the wrong message to our young players who put in a worthy performance to get told there's no way you are replacing my back four (regardless of how well you play) Josh should have been in verses sheffield who says he is not good enough to replace Cambo at r/back..........................MM i am the manager i will play who i want.

Would agree with jas0999. We are really short of defenders at the back so can only assume that we are getting a player in. If we do let them out on-loan, needs to be done on a 24 hour recall basis.
Cannot for the life of me understand why Chambers isn't playing at centre-back. He isn't a right-back. In fact, Josh Emmanuel actually IS a right-back.
Stewart/Henshall etc do need to go out on-loan.

Battyblue - it is not just Emmanuel that has been in verses, it's the whole of the Book of Isaiah.

It's just completely bizarre that Mick continues to play Chambers at right back, and a left footed defender at RCB! I feel sorry for Smith at times, with how exposed he gets left out there.

I'm a little confused as to Emmanuel here.

From many peoples comments, he was very very good first game and perhaps deserved to retain his place for the league game v Sheff Weds.

I don't mind this lad going out for a month to quickly rack up some experience, but if their good enough, they're old enough.

Mick at times does seem very double standards. Mings had some very good games last season, but he also had some absolute mares. He was horrific at Reading first game, beyond bad. I couldn't see him being a regular fixture but he turned out to be.

One of the deals must be for a defender. RB is a major issue, we lack pace at the back dramatically.

well that says it all then if you have a good game then get dropped then told you might go on loan thats must be soul destroying for the poor lad if good enough should play and keep your place no matter what, we will continue to give soft goals away then plain and simple

So MM really believes in these two youngsters then! Play well, get dropped, and worse still for someone who puts in average performances because he's playing out of position.

Good job Bobby Robson wasn't cut from the same cloth or we'd probably never have seen George Burley play. Or Beattie, Wark, Osman, Butcher etc etc!!

Hmmm, I'm afraid chambers being club captain has backed muck into a position. Passion is not disputed but clearly out of position and costing us, Saturday he looked very average and was responsible for the opening goal. Tweaking needed at the back, right back needed, chambers is a centre back, unfortunately smith would miss out but again, a left footed player in right centre pack will cost us, very awkward.

Agreed that Brentford did target him early on and he had a shaky start, but he grew in statue and
deserved to start in the Sheffield game. Why is MM so blind to what is going on at RB. Teams target Chambers and Smith down our right-hand side.

Come on Mick wake up to the obvious.

Why does everybody think that this current defensive set up accommodates Chambers? It clearly accommodates Smith being in the team FFS.

carsey added 10:03 - Aug 18
Agree with prebs007 and everyone else on here who question Emmanuel and Kenlock not being played given their good start t the season. I don't question Smithys attitude or effort and the fact he scores goals is a bonus BUT he is the week link in the defence and Chambers isn't a RB.
Having said all that it is clear that MM is going to stick stubbornly to his back 4 whatever the cost so we might as well shut up about it.

Quote "Chambo's my captain and he was always going to play".

Collected some down arrows so it would seem some think that however poorly Chambers plays and however well others play at RB Chambers and Smith will continue to be picked in their current positions?

Bizarre totally bizarre.

Our back 4 was cack for the 2nd half of last season, Chambers at rightback and Smith on the right of defence is a proven ropey combo.

Both good pros doing their best but ultimately square pegs in round holes.
