McCarthy: Fabulous Draw
Tuesday, 25th Aug 2015 23:45

Boss Mick McCarthy hailed Town drawing Manchester United at Old Trafford in the third round of the Capital One Cup as “fabulous”, but admitted he might have to change his policy of fielding his youngsters in the competition against such stiff opposition.

“It’s a fabulous draw,” he told the club site. “I don’t mind travelling to that one. I thought we might get someone away from League Two when we have to travel miles and the pressure is on but that’s a great trip to make.

“I’m pleased for the fans as well. Over 700 have made it to Doncaster tonight so that’s a great draw for them. I’m sure they will look forward to it.”

He added: “I said that I would play the kids whoever we played but I might have to think again now!

"I’ll have Bish back and Kevin Bru and a few others. We will have a stronger squad and we will see where we are when that game comes around.”

The game at Old Trafford is likely to be on Wednesday 23rd September with Manchester United playing on the preceding Sunday.

Meanwhile, debutant goalscorer James Alabi was pleased with his performance, his goal and more than anything the victory: “It was a great debut for me personally but all the lads have done well tonight to come from behind and win the game.

“Doncaster made us work hard for the win tonight but we showed good character and deserved it in the end. The fans have made a long trip and I’m just pleased we’ve sent them home happy.

“The gaffer has given the young lads a chance tonight and that’s one of the main reasons I joined Ipswich, because he does show that belief.

“I’m delighted to score and it was a poacher’s finish really. Hopefully that can be the first of many when I’m given a chance. I just promise to work hard and see where it takes me and, of course, the club.”

Going to be a shame to ruin Neymar's debut

Don't do it Mick. It would be smart squad building if the 'second' team was rewarded for their efforts.

Tabby will sort Neymar anyway.

We've got a great squad this season and have every chance of progressing to the 4th round. Belief, determination and fan support is all we need. Let's get behind the blues for every game that we can personally make and listen to and with this game....well, let's show the players that the best fans in the world are right behind them :-)

Great draw! Reward for beating the lower league sides this season. I'm sure there will be a great following.

I'm sure we'll change the team for Man Utd, but it wouldn't be great experience for kids to go there and get thrashed, Mick will have to find the balance between resting some first team players and giving Man Utd a game

To win the trophy, we will have to beat some of the 'big' teams so we might as well start now. Onwards and Upwards.

I'm sure most of the first team players won't want to be rested for this one though. Tough call for MM to make.

Revenge!? We beat them 3-2 the same season and they lost the league by 1 point. Everytime a Man Utd " superfan" points out the 9-0 I inform them of this and they crawl back under their rock.

Currie10 - let's not forget the 6-0 evisceration we administered back in '79-'80! A much greater achievement, as back then football was fairer and you didn't just have to have a massive cheque book to build a competitive team...

Difficult one for the boss, it will not be fair to drop the youngsters who have got us in the 3rd Round draw but then again how many of the first team have played at Old Trafford.

gibbo, the first team will get to run out at OT next season ;)...we need a blend obviously, as rickw said it wouldn't be good for the kids to get a thrashing, though of course we hoped they wouldn't, but we all know how difficult it could be..

Great draw for all of us...

Let's not see this as anything other than a chance to go there and cause an upset - probably the best chance we have had of doing so for many a long year.

Going there to do the business - has to be the plan,

Bring it on.
