Manchester United Date Set
Wednesday, 26th Aug 2015 17:09

Town’s Capital One Cup third round tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford has been confirmed for Wednesday 23rd September (KO 7.45pm).

The teams last met in the competition at the same stage back in the 1997/98 season when goals from Alex Mathie and Mauricio Taricco saw the Blues to a 2-0 victory at Portman Road.

In 1971/72 they met at the second round stage at Portman Road, United winning 3-1 via goals from George Best (2) and Willie Morgan, Jimmy Robertson having put the Blues ahead.

Town last faced the Red Devils in the league back in the 2001/02 relegation season when United won 4-0 at Old Trafford and, in the penultimate game of the season, 1-0 at Portman Road, Ruud van Nistelrooy winning and converting a contentious penalty just before half-time.

Overall, the Blues have won 19 games between the sides (17 in the league) and the Red Devils 28 (24), while nine have been draws.

Think this could help with the league, players will raise there game even higher if thats possible at the moment! Everyone will be wanting to start!

Not sure of the allocation of tickets but think we could sell 9,000 for sure. Haven't played them for a while.

Beating Man Utd 19 times in 56 matches is a pretty good record I'd say. Let's hope we can make it 20. :-)

Hated him, cheating diving idiot.

I can recall us beating them 2-0 at PR in this competition probably the last time we met in it. That was a good night. They played their reserves but it was still a team full of internationals. Taricco scored a cracker for the second.

I feel sorry for Harry when he writes up his notes... Man U must have hundreds of forums for him to look into.

kozmik - No it wont...

MUFC TV - "Unfortunately, because of how UK & ROI television rights work we cannot show live first team games during the season. But you can watch the full 90 minutes of most first team fixtures within 24 hours of the final whistle."

I can recall beating them 6-0 in 1980 at Portman Road and was lucky enough as a youngster to go to that game and there were also 3 penalties I think missed by us...

That is correct ITFCGloryDays, although technically only 2 pens missed because one was twice taken.

Remember that 'contentious' penalty that United were rewarded with at the end of the season that we were relegated, RVN clearly clipping his own ankles!!

As for the cup I feel we have a reasonable chance of an upset as United will clearly play their reserve side and Mick will play a stronger team who have absolutely nothing to lose. COYB!

The 6-0 game in March 1980 was my first one - hence the picture on the right. I thought it was going to be like every week. Well, for a couple of years, it was.

The 6 0 was the turning point for Robson's finest team. Muhren, Brazil, Gates etc all started playing properly as a team from this game on
Wonderful afternoon, and very significant too

Regarding the 6.0 win in 1980, I believe Wark was absent that day, as he had sadly, recently lost his father. Had circumstances been different and he had played, I believe we would most probably have won 8.0 with our regular and superb penalty taker in the team.

Remember the 6-0 in 1980. Was a victim of hooliganism afterwards. Hated Man U and their fans ever since. £38 compo from Court the following week. How many years would it take these days?
