Oar Deal Confirmed
Saturday, 29th Aug 2015 20:00

Free agent winger Tommy Oar has signed for the Blues, putting pen to paper on a two-year deal with an option for a further season. As reported earlier, Oar arrived at the club earlier today to formalise the details of his contract and to undergo a medical.

“It’s a perfect move for me,” Oar told the club site. “I’ve spoken to Mick McCarthy a few times and I can tell it is a club with ambition.

“Moving to England was always my preferred option and when a club likes Ipswich comes up, it’s going be a great opportunity for me and I’m delighted that is has worked out.

“I watched Ipswich play a few times on TV last year and the team had a great year. I’m just looking forward to being involved here now and helping the team try to get in the Premier League.”

Australian international Oar, 23, left Dutch side FC Utrecht at the end of last season after five years, having made 105 Eredivisie appearances, scoring four goals.

The Queenslander was previously with the Brisbane Roar, having played youth football with Palm Beach and QAS.

Oar has won 25 full caps, scoring two goals, having made his international debut in March 2010.

He is now set to join up with the Australia squad for World Cup qualifiers against Bangladesh in Perth on Thursday and against Tajikistan in Dushanbe the following Tuesday.

Oar was a member of this year's Asian Cup-winning squad but played only one game from the bench.

The wideman was included in the 28-man provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but didn't make the final cut.

Having been in the squad for the U20 World Cup in Colombia in 2011, Oar then started all three of the Socceroos' games at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Prior to joining the Blues, he was close to joining Athletic Bilbao but the deal fell through as he was deemed to have insufficient Basque heritage, despite his paternal grandparents having come from the region.

Athletic only recruit players from the Basque country or who have come through their youth system.

Oar also received interest from clubs in the Middle East and elsewhere abroad, and had also been linked with Brighton, Hull City and Fulham.

Meanwhile, defender Piotr Malarczyk was pleased to make his debut as a half-time sub against Brighton, despite ending the game on the losing side

“I am very happy to sign for Ipswich Town and I’m excited to be here.

“It was good to get some time on the pitch today, although it wasn’t the result we wanted.

“Credit to Brighton, they are a very good side and they played with a lot of pace. But we can still hold our heads up high.

“I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the fans are very lively. I have always wanted to play in England and I’m happy to be here now.

“My English isn’t the best but it helps having Bartosz with me and he’s helping me settle in. All of the players have been very welcoming. I just want to work hard every day and show people what I can do.”

A nice way to end a disappointing day. Hopefully Oar is ready to go straight into the team on the right wing, as Maitland-Niles is clearly behind the outstanding Fraser.

Good signing. Still think we need a keeper and goal scoring central midfield player, but squad is now large so don't think it will happen. After today though, it's evident we should consider new additions.

Probably not the best idea to wear a Nike polo shirt when doing press photos for a club who wear Adidas kit!!!

This was certainly the better of the two Ordeals at Portman Road today.

Tommy is a good player. Seen him play for Australia numerous times and always plays well. Usually left wing, and sometimes as a left-back (but he's not a defender). Also saw him in the A- league a few years back. He can take players on and will set up plenty of chances.

But I'd keep niles and Fraser as the wide men at this stage, both are class. At some stage tommy could come in and do a good job.

Well done to the town scouting team!

jas0999. im sorry but just like others on here today, I don't see where you all coming from. yesterday when malarcyk signed and it was announced that oar was signing everyone was totally happy with the size and make up of the squad. we have one off day and lose and suddenly we need to strengthen the squad again. ridiculous, so are we gonna sign new players every time we lose a match? while I don't totally disagree that we could do with a better keeper than gerken, this thing people seem to have of blaming him every time we lose is out of order. he did nothing wrong in this match. he stood no chance with ne of the goals, they were all down to rank poor defending,

As usual grumpy we fans have absolutely no idea who's coming or going but as we don't pick the players to watch or who to sign we'll just have to trust in Mick and co, so far so good imo!

Can he play right back as none of the players that are fit for selection seem to be able to? Looks a great addition to the side for attacking options but as yesterday proved a lot of our problems are still on the right side of defence.

Malarczyk looked ok to me at right back in the second half yesterday despite not knowing any of his team mates or our style of play.

It was interesting to hear about Athletic Bilbao and their recruitment policies. On the one hand I like the rule about players having to come from the region, but on the other it makes me a little uneasy to hear that players with Basque heritage can play for them. What does that mean?
It seems a little limiting to the team.
I think most people would agree that we want to see a core of the team that have come through the academy, but I'm also happy to have people like Knudsen and Malarczyk who want to be part of our team and who seem very respectful and positive about the club.
So on that count, I think Mick has done a good job.

Why would we sign an unproven winger. When will Jay Tabb get his chance on the left again?
