Groin Injury Forces McGoldrick Out of Ireland Squad
Sunday, 30th Aug 2015 12:45

A groin injury forced striker David McGoldrick out of the final 28-man Republic of Ireland squad for their Euro 2016 qualifiers at the start of September, Town have revealed. Fellow frontman Daryl Murphy had already been ruled out with his calf problem.

Both McGoldrick and Murphy were named in the provisional 37-man squad for the qualifiers against Gibraltar and Georgia. The reduced party was named last night.

Ireland boss Martin O'Neill was at the recent home game against Sheffield Wednesday, while his assistant, former Blues boss Roy Keane, was at last week's match at Preston.

Christophe Berra has also been forced out of the Scotland squad for their qualifiers against the Georgians and Germany.

Tommy Smith has been left out of the New Zealand squad for their friendly against Myanmar in Yangon.

“With injury, squad balance and travel distance also considerations for this one-match trip, we opted not to include Chris [Wood], Ryan [Thomas] and Tommy for this game,” coach Anthony Hudson explained.

Republic of Ireland: David Forde (Millwall), Shay Given (Stoke City), Darren Randolph (West Ham United), Seamus Coleman (Everton), Cyrus Christie (Derby County), John O’Shea (Sunderland), Marc Wilson (Stoke City), Richard Keogh (Derby County), Ciaran Clark (Aston Villa), Stephen Ward (Burnley), Robbie Brady (Norwich City), Alex Pearce (Derby County), Paul McShane (Reading), Jon Walters (Stoke City), Aiden McGeady (Everton), Glenn Whelan (Stoke City), James McCarthy (Everton), Jeff Hendrick (Derby County), Eunan O’Kane (Bournemouth), Wes Hoolahan (Norwich City), Stephen Quinn (Reading), David Meyler (Hull City), James McClean (West Bromwich Albion), Anthony Pilkington (Cardiff City), Shane Long (Southampton), Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy), Adam Rooney (Aberdeen), Kevin Doyle (Colorado Rapids). Standby: Stand-by: Alan Judge (Brentford), Simon Cox (Reading), Rob Elliot (Newcastle United), Anthony Stokes (Celtic).

As much as I want Ipswich to be represented internationally, someone as injury prone as didz is could do with this rest, and I'm sure we'll see the benefits late September.

I have to say I am relived a little that Didz and Berra aren't taking part this time around, we need as many fit players as we can get, and after today's game the international break is a welcome one. That said, i hope to see them both playing internationals soon.

Their loss. Barring maybe Shane Long, he's much better than every other striker in that squad. As others have mentioned, I'm personally pleased so he can concentrate on getting back fit for us instead. It's obvious how much better we are when he's playing in form.

No bad thing. Thought he changed the game when he came on yesterday. A rest will do him good. Excellent player.

He's better than all of the others! What do you expect with Keane scouting him, he wouldn't know a player if it smacked h in the eyes! Finally doing some good for our club after putting it back 5 years! Sorry for didzy but our gain

I'm pleased about this too. But isn't this typical of anything that Roy Keane is involved with? Skillful player back to full ability, 2 goals in 2matches.. drop him! Worth reading Damien Delaney's thoughts on the current Irish regime.

Agree this is the best decision, although I suspect Didsy wont be seeing that way.

I never can understand why players are picked for international squads when they are recovering from a long term injury or are out of form (as McGoldrick was when he was picked at the end of last season) now he is getting back to his best they don't select him!! Good news for us as he won't get injured with them in the next two weeks

Being reported that Didz has actually pulled out due to a calf injury. Hopefully it's due to him still coming back from the old injury rather than a fresh flare up.

Martin O'Neill sent RK off to look at strikers? He must be unaware that he managed to ship out Rhodes and bring in Priskin. My sympathy goes out to McG as he is getting back to his best.

Good. Keep him fit for Town. I'm not fussed whether Ireland qualify or not.

Apparently - according to reports - the withdrawal was due to a groin injury. Let's hope its not too bad.

Please do not let McG's injury be serious.

I think a fit Didz has to be in our starting side.

Didnt he have the nickname "sicknote" when he was at Forest? I said at start if season I doubted he would complete the whole season. But i had expected longer than 4-5 games!

A bit naughty to change the headline of this string from Didz being simply dropped by O'neil & Keane after some of us had already posted our comments. Still, I won't allow simple things such as facts get in the way of my opinion of Roy Keane....

We have a good team, starting eleven wise. Whether we have enough quality in depth is another question. Giles Coke certainly didn't impress as a back up yesterday. He's not good enough that's for sure. Still think we lack enough quality players to cover injuries at the back and in central midfield. Number of players is good, but lots of hard workers. Not impact players.

It gets worse. Six players injured before yesterday's game, now a seventh.
It doesn't matter so much about the size of the squad if there are so many injuries that include key players. Too many compromised selections and switches yesterday. The sick list needs to be down to three at the most at the end of the break or we will continue to struggle like we did yesterday.

These are the most injuries that Mick has had to cope with since he came here, nearly three years ago;so lucky he has made these recent additions

Groin injury. Clearly Bullsh1t. That's the one they always use to get out of a friendly. But both MM and MoN will know the score.
