Friday, 4th Sep 2015 20:49

Blues loanee winger Ainsley Maitland-Niles was on target as England’s U19s beat Germany 3-2 in a friendly in Bergisch Gladbach this evening.

The 18-year-old, who was winning his first U19 cap, smashed a 25-yard strike into the top corner in the 64th minute to make the score 3-1, England having been reduced to 10 men when Jonjoe Kenny was red-carded just after half-time. The hosts pulled a goal back but Maitland-Niles and his team-mates clung on to win.

The England U19s are in action in another friendly against Croatia in Zagreb on Monday.

Elsewhere, Dylan Connolly played the first half as the Republic of Ireland U21s beat Qatar’s U22s 4-1 in a friendly at Bury’s Gigg Lane. The Irish youngsters face Andorra in a Euro 2017 qualifier on Tuesday.

Defender Josh Yorwerth won his second cap as the Wales U21s beat Luxembourg 3-1 away in a Euro 2017 qualifier, while keeper Michael Crowe was an unused sub.

On Saturday, loan winger Ryan Fraser and recently signed keeper Jonathan Henly could win caps with the Scotland U21s in their Euro 2017 qualifier against Northern Ireland at Mourneview Park, Lurgan.
