Yorwerth Set to Join Crawley
Tuesday, 29th Sep 2015 09:42

Town centre-half Josh Yorwerth is set to join League Two Crawley Town on loan.

According to the Crawley News Reds chief executive Michael Dunford has confirmed that Yorwerth is expected to join on a 28-day loan today in time for this evening's visit to Newport County.

Town boss Mick McCarthy had said he was keen to get Wales U21 international Yorwerth out on loan to get games, although the move has taken place more quickly than the Blues boss had anticipated. Crawley currently have only one fit central defender with Joe McNerney and Jon Ashton both injured.

Yorwerth, 20, made a goalscoring debut in the Capital One Cup first round tie against Stevenage and featured in the subsequent ties against Doncaster and Manchester United in the same competition.

With the Blues now out Yorwerth, like Josh Emmanuel, is unlikely to play much if any first-team football at Town in the months prior to the FA Cup third round.

The Bridgend-born defender joined the Blues in the summer after a trial having been released by Cardiff City at the end of last season.

Quite surprised at this. He was superb at Man Utd and given Berra's poor run of form I'd liked to have seen him push for a chance. Maybe we'll bring a loan in?

Does anyone really think MM gave an interview at 6am?

Quotes were a couple of days old, so not quite as quick a turnaround as it might appear! Still quicker than he anticipated - he mentioned the international break - but probably sees Crawley as a good opportunity for Josh.

I think this lad looks like a good prospect, could see him being one of the top CB's in league 2 along with Matt Clarke!

Finding it difficult to make sense of mm these days

As above, don't think he is miles off a start for us at the mo. The difference in him between the Col Utd friendly and the Man Utd game is quite extraordinary.

muccletonjoe - What's difficult to understand? He is 4th in line at best, if Smith or Berra get injured then Chambers is going to play CB before Josh. So why not loan him out to get games? - It's competitive football at a club with much lesser facilities than us so hopefully it will give him the hunger to succeed here which can only be a good thing?

It's not working out so bad for Matt Clarke last time I checked.

A month of competitive first team football will be good for him, he's looked good so far so could maybe prove to Mick he can do it and come back and challenge for the first team.

I think Berra, Smith, Chambers and Malarcyk are all ahead of him for the first team at the moment so it makes sense to give him experience and maybe bring him back for the busy christmas period

Crawley will also be playing games during the International break when we aren't - so the timing make perfect sense.

Agree with havinit69,rickw and Fixed_It all makes good sense.
Yorwerth is a prospect but would be behind Malarcyk in my view if any change was made at CD at the moment.
Good temporary move for Josh and good long term for ITFC.

This is a good move for al concerned. I like him, but probably don't rate him as highly as a lot of posters on here. I would have him behind Malarczyk & indeed Clarke as well as the 3 untouchables. Strong in the air and very willing to put himself about, but I do think his decision making and positioning need to improve, which hopefully will happen at Crawley.
Centre half is a very strange position for us this year. I would have Christophe Berra as one of, if not the, top centre half in the Championship, however he has started the season very poorly. Luke Chambers was a very good centre half until Mick decided not to buy a right back & play Chamber there instead. All that this has done is weakened us at RB and weakened Chambers as a centre half in the process. Tommy Smith would have been my third best of the 3 since the arrival of Berra, and I have been one of those who called for him to be dropped after Christmas last season (with Chambers restored to the right side of the partnership), but to be fair to Tommy he has arguably been our best defender so far this season. I like the look of Malarczyk, even though he could have been stronger against Rooney for that goal, and thought he was very composed throughout that Cup match. I certainly think he should now be considered as an option to start in the league.

Good experience.
I was very impressed with him against ManU, he was totally unfazed by who he had to mark. MOTM.
He really could be a really top defender for us. Another gem that MM has unearthed.
I would disagree with some posts and say that he looks a better prospect for us than Malarczyk.

Havinit 69 nothing at to do with him actually going to crawley. More like the fact that mm said 24 hours before that he was in no hurry to loan out players and after international break he would have a look at the situation???

Talks as though t here is a pecking order.
Players should be played on merit with performances taken into account, and it is not fair on some of these players that the so called regulars continually get played regardless of how they perform.Because they played well last season shouldn't mean they are included automatically this.

I see this as a good short term move for Yorwerth. He along with Clarke can be the future of our defence. Berra has been so far, Smith has made a few errors but consistently scores vital goals but Chambers despite being the captain has always been the weakest of the 3 established defenders. He is OK at Championship level but could never play any higher. OK he's playing out of position but so is Smith to a lesser degree.
My Pompey friends are delighted with Clarke
