No New Injuries Ahead of Blackburn Trip
Thursday, 1st Oct 2015 14:19

Town boss Mick McCarthy has no new injury problems ahead of Saturday’s visit to Blackburn Rovers, but midfielders Giles Coke and Teddy Bishop remain sidelined.

Coke missed last Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Bristol City having suffered an achilles problem in the Capital One Cup tie at Manchester United.

Asked about the fitness situation ahead of the trip to Ewood Park, McCarthy said: “Just Giles Coke, who was missing at the weekend.

“Everybody else is fit. We’ve lost Josh Yorwerth, who has gone out on a month’s loan to Crawley. But we had 19 outfield players training today and [U21s defender] Joe Robinson joined us.”

Bishop is yet to make a first-team appearance this season due to shin splints and a hamstring injury and the 19-year-old won’t be involved until after the international games which follow Saturday’s match.

“He’s doing OK, we’re just going to make sure,” McCarthy added. “He’ll be having his own mini-boot camp to try and make sure that when he does come back he’ll be bang at it. But it will be after the break now.”

Luke Hyam is expected to return to training in November having undergone knee surgery in the summer.

Ex-Blackburn man Luke Varney is likely to be back at around the same time having suffered an achilles injury in the play-offs while on loan with Town from Rovers last season.

Once fit the free agent 33-year-old, who is undergoing his rehab with the Blues, is set to offered a contract at Portman Road.

We need 3 massive points here. Anything less and we will be playing catch up over Xmas. We need to keep Rhodes quiet as he is likely to score AGAIN against us.
Come on Ipswich , big game this one.

Agreed @wessextractor

Unfortunately I cannot see it. We have a shocking record there and the best I can see is a draw. I would take that now.

Thought Teddy played the first game? Or am I losing it?

Agree with the posts so far - i think the last time we won there in the league was the title winners in 91/92!

No better time to put it right. Brings back nail-biting memories of 93/94 relegation battle and also last years play off challenge, neither time we won, but it was a favourable outcome.

Theyve not started well at all, I hope we can take advantage ....

Off the subject - it's about time Big Burch quit managing. Its clearly not for him, and he's doing his reputation no good.

yorksblue - I think there was more to the Newport job than just the 'on the pitch' issues, a Supporters Trust being able to buy the club from a willing millionaire seller but the uncertainty over direction and wages was probably demotivating to both players and management. He has just decided to leave Newport (and Russell Osman is going too) so I reckon he done the decent thing and removed a fair bit from the wage bill plus given an incoming manager a clean sheet (and more than four first team players) to go on with.

Yorkblue, totally agree with wewerezomies, and may I just add, don't think Inverness supporters would concur with you ! It's not all been bad, although in parts it hasn't gone according to script!

If MM picks the same back 7 GK defence and CM then we lose end of chat. 2nd worst goals against column doesn't lie. Gerken not our best keeper let alone best in league. Chambers worst RB in division. Smith and Berra both so one footed. Knudsen not playing well. Skuse and Douglas shocking against Bristol City. Big diff between loyalty and blind stubbornness Mick. Change it now before we are too far behind. And also pick forwards in form not your love child Murphy who is back to his previous seasons mediocrity and living on last seasons high.

Please Mick don't try to prove everyone wrong by sticking with what is clearly not working. Pick players in the right position and players in form.

I feel for Varney and it's entirely the right thing to do to get him back to full fitness. But, I'm struggling to see where a 33 year old will fit in? His goal scoring record would mean he's fifth choice up front. Whilst I can't see him getting on the wing with Fraser and AMN, nor with the back up we have. Strange one for me.

Prebbs, I agree with most of your comments. I do feel a little for Chambo - we all know he's origially an alright CB. We are leaking goals at the moment. Unfortunately, it is Berra rather than Smith who is playing worse at the moment. I'm hoping Malacyzk comes good in the near future. I think he'll start with Skuse and Douglas and then bring on Bru at 60 mins.

It is frustrating as a fan to see things not working and no changes being made. But alas, we're only just into October and not far off top spot so who knows what the future will bring!

Warktheline - Think Coventry, Brentford, Sunderland, Hibs and most Scotland fans may agree with me. Yes, he did reasonably ok at Inverness.

Depends how many mm plays who are out of form or out of position or both, I am thinking around 7 of the 11, so I can't see us coming back with much from Lancashire

We mish Bish. (I thought he was ok, that Mick was just being over-cautious. Did he suffer a setback?).

Blackburn have been in decline for a couple of seasons now, therefore I see no reason why we shouldn't come away with something, that said I won't be putting the rent money on it!!!

@warktheline - I think Varney fits into Mick's thinking along the lines of an alternative type of striker, likes a physical challenge, not bad in the air. Perhaps a bit like Murphy in ways so is a bit strange why he should be offered a contract with what we have upfront. He did ok before the injury but can't see him with us beyond this season.

Oh well. Given our recent form Varney could prove a good addition. MM is likely to field the following for Blackburn.
Gerks
Chambers, Berra, Smith, Knudsen
Coke, Skuse, Douglas, Tabb
Pittman, Murphy

Strategy: get it right to Chambers and hoof. Counterattacking at its best.

Not who I would play but so be it.

I think Alabi looks decent player - I would put him ahead of Varney - To be fair on CURRENT form I would put him ahead of Murph
