McCarthy: Yorwerth's Beyond U21s Football
Tuesday, 6th Oct 2015 06:00

Blues boss Mick McCarthy is delighted central defender Josh Yorwerth has gone out on loan to Crawley Town and is getting the chance to play some meaningful games, believing that the Welshman is beyond U21s football.

“Delighted,” McCarthy said when quizzed on the 28-day move which saw the former Cardiff trainee make his debut in a 3-0 win back in Wales against Newport County on Tuesday. On Saturday the Red Devils, who are now fourth bottom, lost 2-1 away against leaders Plymouth.

“They were second bottom of League Two so as a defender you think he’s going get a bit of work, but he had a great result there at Newport.

“It’s a good move for him and I’m delighted that he can go out and play some meaningful football.

“He’s beyond the U21s, he’s better than that, he’s been a star in that, a real man and a good competitor. That’s the next level for him and playing week in, week, out.”

While he says he’s able influence whether managers play loan players in their first games whether they keep their places is down to their form.

“The first game I can certainly, but then if they’re hopeless, whoever else goes and he doesn’t play well, I can’t pick his team and I wouldn’t dream of doing it,” he added.

“But when we’re doing that as managers we’ve looked at them and thought the player concerned can cope with what we want.

“We took Ainsley Maitland-Niles as a 17-year-old and nobody knew who he was when he tipped up here.

“I’d seen him play, we’ve seen him play as a club, the coaches, and you think that he can play and start, there’s no question. But then if he plays badly and he’s not up to it, we’d leave him out, just like they would with Josh.

“But you kind of feel that that’s not ever going to happen [with Maitland-Niles], and it won’t happen with Josh either, he’s a very competent player, and certainly at that level he is.”

McCarthy is confident that Yorwerth, who joined Town in the summer following a trial having been released by Cardiff, is capable of being a Championship player, and in the short term.

“Yes, and I don’t think he’ll need a season or two to find his feet, I think he will,” he insisted.

“He’s improved since he came here. He’s got all the tools to be a good defender, Josh. He’s quick, he’s aggressive, he wants to head it, he can head it, he can play. That was maybe his downfall a bit when he came here - be a defender first and foremost.

"And that’s what he’s done and that’s why league managers wanted him on loan. I’m really pleased with him.”

He says loan spells can be a test of character for players who may be asked to play differently.

“He should still have the same values and same work ethic and play the same way,” McCarthy continued. “The manager might ask him to fan out and play a bit more football but the defensive role he’s had and how we’re saying he should be doing it, he should stick to that.

“And they’re not making money, it probably costs them money to stay and to travel, but he was so determined and wanted to go out and play, which was great. There was no question, it was just ‘Where do I sign, let me get playing’.”

Yorwerth will miss Crawley’s game at home to Leyton Orient on Saturday - the Football League turned down the Red Devils’ request to have the game postponed due to international calls - as he and Blues keeper Michael Crowe will be with the Wales U21 squad for their Euro 2017 qualifier against Denmark in Aalborg on Friday.

With Matt Clarke impressing on loan at Portsmouth - Pompey drew 0-0 at home to Yeovil on Saturday and are now fourth in League Two – and full-backs Josh Emmanuel and Myles Kenlock also making progress, McCarthy has seen a young back four emerge in the opening weeks of this season.

“That’s really pleasing, and three of the coming through the academy is terrific,” the Town boss enthused. “Josh Emmanuel is really doing well, I thought he was excellent at Old Trafford. He’s just got more experienced players in front of him.

“Myles Kenlock, he keeps playing in the U21s, he’s doing well and Clarkey, Mark Kennedy watched him on Tuesday night and said he was excellent.”

The Blues boss says he could look to send more of his youngsters out on loan: “Possibly, if somebody is looking for them, yes. I’m not going to be touting them around but I think if somebody is looking for them they’d get a bit of quality.”

On the forums I have been saying he's too good for Under 21s, just a little work on some rough edges and I reckon he'll be snapping at the heals of the first team in no time.

''He's quick, he's aggressive, he wants to head it, he can head it, he can play. That was maybe his downfall a bit when he came here - be a defender first and foremost.''

In other words, don't try to pass the ball out from the back, just hoof it out.
Mick's philosophy summed up in a nutshell.

Let's play him as soon as he is back. A man in form is what we desperately need just now!

He goes to Crawley and he might be asked 'to play a bit more football'.

No one else dying inside when they hear that?

The way some of the regulars......are playing send them out on loan they may be asked to play a bit of football (o god forbid) get Clarke back when his loan is up and put him in the team ,our defense is way below standard.

The reason why MM fosters such a great team spirit is that he is loyal to his players and in turn they fight for every ball for him. But unfortunately I think this loyalty blinds him to the faults of his defenders, as well as some of the midfielders, who just haven't been performing.

Last season we kept hearing that McDonnell was a real talent but apart from the League Cup he hasn't been mentioned. Every player has a bad game and its right that they should be given another game to rectify their form — but poor performances have been common place this season.

I do think that the reason why we invite so much pressure on to us is simply because the spine of the team is either too immobile or lack the ability to pass the ball out of defence. Defenders hoof, ball goes over the heads of the central midfielders and the opposition build another attack.

I think one of the main problems with our defence is that Chambers, Berra, and Smith all feel as if they are un-droppable thus the drop in performance.

With the likes of Howerth and Clark, I do believe they can put pressure on the current defence to realise that their places are not guaranteed, but that all depends on MM switching off his default loyalty setting and taking a risk choosing players who are hungry to play.

rinkydinkpanther - exactly my feeling when I read that comment. Says all anyone needs to know about town under the current management. The players whether capable or not are not expected to pass the ball and play the game as it is intended to be played or as it is played by the top teams around the world. I know we are a 2nd tier team in a very hard league but surely we should be trying to play the right way? Look at the teams that went up last season - all off them play on the ground - pass and move. Schoolboy stuff really.

Mick says Josh Emmanuel is doing well but has more experienced players in front of him.
Presume he means undroppable Captain Luke Chambers who has cost us several goals in that position including the second by Jordan Rhodes on Saturday.
Talking about the other Josh(Yorwerth) Mick says "The Manager(Crawleys)might ask him to fan out and play a bit more football;but the defensive role, and how we are saying he should be doing it,he should stick to that".Presumably he means hoof ball.

Says it all about Mick McCarthys philosophy and may explain why our centre backs rarely pass the ball on the ground forward to one of the midfield, and we get slow and static football allowing opposition time to mark up our attackers.

Interesting footnote that Neil Warnock, who like McCarthy has been described as a dinosaur, thinks the Town fans are very fortunate to have his mate Mick at the helm who will always have his teams in with a chance of promotion.

Neil, who is a few years older than Mick, went on to say at the Walsham-le-willows sportsmans dinner;that Ipswich might need to spend in January to achieve this however.

Mr Warnock, who has now retired at the age of 66 after managing 13 clubs, was apparently in the frame for both the Norwich job, where he had an interview, and at Ipswich where he lost out to Roy Keane!!!

I cannot remember a time in recent years when we have had a squad with so many attack/wide options - BUT I then look behind them and think - maybe we shoudl have swapped one of those midfielders ( or two!) for a keeper and and a RB !!
We have loaned out Clarke and Yorwerth - fine , but at least they would put the others at the back under pressure - Berra ( along with Murph) is not worth a place in the side at present . Chambers - who by his own admission is no right back - we have a young lad just working out the game on the left -Two keepers -and the best one we have doesnt play - where is the competition at the back!! - All players need to feel that their place can be taken - at the moment this blind 'loyalty' is sending us down at an alarming rate
When i look at the bench this years vs last we have 'better players' at our disposal , but confidence , as in everything can soon ebb away if we keep gifting goals away - So Mick , use your time to highlight all the goals - this year ! we have gifted to teams - esp with balls over the top , unchallenged headers , easy crosses - I cant think of too many 'great goals' that we conceded - it is usually down to us gifting teams goals - we need a solution sharpish ..... We have all seen the great job you ahve done in rebuilding us since the Keane and Jewell debacle - but we now need some real progress

@foot_kick_ball_goal.looks a great line up there, but I would swop either bru or definitely bishop for Skuse,in my opinion this would be the team most of us would pick and love to see start our next game.AND I KNOW IT WOULD DO WELL.

Hmm, I think Skuse is handy in the holding midfield role. Bishop is more of an attacking option that would bump McGoldrick out. But he is injured right now anyway. I feel Skuse gets an unfortunate and unfair amount of stick as his role in the middle of the park is more defensive so easier to overlook. I feel that he is a very important cog in the machine.

28 days on loan, good job it is only that - they way things are going at the back he could be starting before long.

re: Warnock, 'we might need to spend in the January transfer window' - well he obviously doesn't know the clubs Modus Operandi so I'll dismiss his comments.

He had a very good game at Man Utd. Why put him up against the best strikers in the world one minute and then out on loan in league 2 the next?!!!?

Sir Bobby blooded Beattie, Burley(17 years old against George best at old Trafford), Osman, Butcher, Wark, Gates and numerous others in their teans he felt they were good enough and history proved him spot on(luv im!!) of course they made mistakes as part of the learning curve, but that is what I would prefer to watch than the 5 favourite error prone dinosaurs that I have had to witness in the past few weeks

Yes MM,but its just a shame that some of these more experienced players,or your Keystone Cops defenders as you called them, are not playing well and should be dropped to give other squad players their chance.

The only time for months and months that I have seen a Town central defender pass a ball along the ground to our center forward was when our new Polish guy did that at Old Trafford (at least twice).

Obviously he hasn't had the benefit of training with the squad very long to get him out of that bad habit!!!

I think these loan moves are great for both Yorwerth and Clarke. Great experience. Hopefully they will be available in January for us.
