U21s Knocked Out of the Premier Cup By Charlton
Monday, 12th Oct 2015 22:05 by James Ager

Town's U21s crashed out of the U21 Premier League Cup in the second qualifying round after a lacklustre 3-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic at Portman Road on Monday evening.

Mark Kennedy named a young side with Josh Emmanuel and Myles Kenlock filling the full-back roles and Alex Henshall starting on the left. The rest of the squad was made up of young pros or Academy scholars.

The first quarter of the game was particularly scrappy, although Brandon Hanlan headed narrowly over for the visitors and then forced Michael Crowe to spread himself and divert his goalbound effort onto the crossbar.

At the other end, as the half hour mark approached, Andre Dozzell picked out Adam McDonnell from a corner and the Irish U19 international took a touch before hitting a volley from 30 yards which was tipped over by keeper Jordan Beeney.

Town again had their Crowe to thank for keeping the scores level going into half-time as he thwarted Hanlan as the frontman was bearing down on goal, and from the resultant corner Josh Staunton's header was clawed away from the top corner by the Town stopper.

However, the Addicks did break the deadlock three minutes after the interval when Ollie Muldoon's cross-shot found its way to Joe Aribo, who bundled the ball home from close range.

The lead was doubled four minutes later when Ademola Lookman turned and beat George Fowler for pace before sliding a left-foot effort under the advancing Crowe.

The Blues only created a few half-chances and the closest they came to scoring was when Kyle Hammond's drive was deflected just wide of the target.

Charlton then broke and added a third on 77 when the ball fell kindly to Tareiq Holmes-Dennis after another strong run from Lookman, and the captain blasted the ball into the net.

The Londoners were better than Town in just about every area of the pitch and they fully deserved their victory.

Kenlock impressed at left-back with some good tackles and bursts forward, but the lack of chances that the Blues created at the other end was disappointing.

U21s: Crowe, Emmanuel, Kenlock, McDonnell, Fowler, Robinson, Hammond, Dozzell (Maynard 81), Alabi, Ford (Ramadan 46), Henshall. Unused: Wright, Woolfenden, Jones.

Lacklustre seems to be a virus running through the club at present?
Need to find a cure & fast!

Personally I do think Kennedy has been very fortunate to retain his position and if you think what his teams have achieved (Nowt)
Perhaps it is time it was reviewed and someone new brought in.

Was not helpful that the referee had a game that made Andy D'Urso look like the best ref in the world ! He destroyed our players morale with his one -sided decisions . We were all surprised he did not give a penalty and book Crowe ( goalkeeper ) for handball ! Several of the Charlton players challenges would have been good at twickenham . Although we did not play to our best and did not deserve to win it would have been nice to havea fairly refereed contest .

Further to my comment yesterday, didn't look as though Mark Kennedy used the over age players whereas it appeared that Charlton did as in midfield it was men against boys.
Andre Dozzell despite the hype I read on the websites looked hopeless in midfeld ,and similar to first team no passing through this part of the field.
Town are so predictable, hit it long from back to front into the channels from left or right,or hoof from the keeper up to Alabi at number 9 who won nothing in the air.
It was from such a ball that Charlton got their 2nd goal. The 3rd started with a header from off the Addicks goal line with one touch football and a run down their left and a terrific shot.
It must be very easy for opposing managers at u21 and first team level to set up against Ipswich as they nearly always play 4-2-4 and rarely vary their approach.
Last night,as with the first team there was too much passing across the field or backwards allowing opposition to get set in position, and not enough passing and movement forward;also a distinct lack of pace.
We certainly did not see much potential for first team on this showing.
Emmanuel on occasions was caught upfield with all their goals coming from the Ipswich right hand side although as James said Kenlock was okay.
Best two players for Ipswich in our opinion were Michael Crowe and No6 and captain Joe Robinson who won everything in the air;but even these two had a dodgy moment each which may have been the pitch as it is not as good as it used to be under Alan Ferguson.
Glad we got in free as entertainment from Town perspective was not worth an entrance fee.

Oh,and as for the referee, cant remember in 50 years ever seen so many free kicks given to the opposition compared to home side.Seems that every time a Charlton player was touched they went down and got a free kick. There were some similar incidents against Ipswich which were allowed by this terrible referee who couldn't hold a candle to Andy Durso or Clive Thomas!

Great, so now we've got the clubs youngsters being "encouraged" to play mindless, pointless, hoofball football. I seem to remember one Arnie Muhren very soon after he arrived, telling Bobby Robson that there wasn't much point in playing him if he was going to spend all match watching the ball sail over his head. Sir Booby soon got the message fortunately. I think maybe it's time for one or two of our senior players to step up to the plate and do something similar. There are players at this club who can play with the ball at their feet.
