What's Town's TV Form Like? Check Out How the Blues Fared in Every Live Fixture
Wednesday, 25th Nov 2015 16:40

As Town go into a run of three Sky games in a row - at Charlton, at home to Middlesbrough and away against the MK Dons - TWTD poster Paul Bloomfield has compiled a complete list of Town’s results in matches shown live on the small screen.

Stretching back to the glorious FA Cup final victory over Arsenal at Wembley in 1978, 145 senior games involving the Blues have been shown live on domestic television with Town running out winners on 53 occasions and losers on 62 with 30 matches ending in draws. Town have scored 190 goals in those fixtures and have conceded 207 times.

Paul put together his list with the help of a large number of TWTD posters over the last few weeks via a monster thread which can be found here.

He explained where the idea came from: "I've been researching live football on TV for the past year and a half for a web project of mine.

“A Torquay fan pointed me towards a complete list of his club's televised matches over the years and I thought it would be a good idea to do the same thing for Ipswich.

“Thanks to the contributions of several different TWTD members, a definitive list was formed in little over two weeks.

“It is interesting to now be able to dissect this information. For example, we are currently on our longest run of games without a win on TV.”

You can find Paul’s record of all Town’s live TV games, including which channels showed them, on his website here.

Was the FA Cup semi final not live in 1978?

Interesting stuff. I knew we were not great on TV recently, but didn't realise we were this bad!!

MaySixth

Back in the day only the FA Cup final was the only club fixture shown live. Things have changed a bit since then.

Some great memories reading down that list, but crikey! nearly a year to the day since we last won on live TV and against Charlton of all people.

While this record is not one to shout about, we must take into account that over the course of the last 40 years most of the televised matches will have been when we were playing in the top flight and were, more often than not, the underdogs!

I dread knowing that we're on TV as we normally get humiliated. Seems we seem to get stage fright and are absolutely dreadful - Reading away recently a typical example. I'm off to Charlton to watch the game and am hoping we don't give them any hope whatsoever of picking up a point. Go for the kill be decisive and don't play for a point. COYB

I was about to suggest that 3-2 against Cov, but its only cos I've watched it that much on YouTube I've convinced myself it was a televised game...
Loved that 3-0 on the piste against Sven's Leicester.

Would be interesting to see what our record is like regarding results in the games played immediately after the International breaks. I dont have thise stats but I feel we rarely get a win, and have often dropped points. If anyone has the time over the last 2-3 seasons Id personally be very interested/ grateful.

May sixth the semi wasn't live, but I was thinking about the charity shield as well. Remember being on holiday in Norfolk of all places when it was on and hearing the result gave me a shock. Was on a Saturday afternoon back then and I thought they were live at that time.

Re: the FA Cup semi-final v West Brom in 1978 - I have a DVD recording of the full 90 minutes (obviously converted from VHS) and it was on a channel called Viasat which is seemingly a Scandinavian TV channel. So, it may have been broadcast abroad but not in the UK.

There are several games that have been shown live abroad but not in this country, particularly in more recent times. For example, the FA Cup tie at home to Portsmouth in 2008 was shown on FOX Sports in America and several of our Championship matches in the past few seasons have been beamed live overseas. These are the games that you would then see shown as the featured matches in the evening highlights programmes over here.

@ITFC_Cairo Not true, actually. Over half of the games we've ever had shown live on TV in the UK have been since we last dropped out of the top-flight, such has been the increase in televised football. I think only about 25% of the matches we've had on TV have been from when we've been competing in the top division.

^ A couple of other points I forgot to mention.

1. Perhaps it's needless to say, but I deliberately didn't include any matches that were only shown abroad. The list only consists of matches that were legally broadcast in the UK.

2. You may not know that there is a ruling called the "blackout rule" which prevents games from being broadcast live between 2.45pm and 5.15pm on Saturday afternoons in the UK. That's how to determine whether a game was shown live in the UK or not. The rule has been in place since the 60s!

Crikey. There are some fairly miserable sequences in there. Excluding our current run, there's another of 7 consecutive defeats, and another of 9 without a win.

Next 3 games on Sky. Sigh....

Brilliant work, have always wondered how many times i've seen us on the box - don't think i've missed one since the 87-88 game vs Man U..seems hilarious now that there was a 9 year gap between the 78 & 87 matches!

The stand out one will always be the play-off final.

Let's hope we put a few things right over the next 3.

Phew. Scrolling through that was like having my life flash before my eyes!

Amazing to think the UEFA Cup Final wasn't on live. I remember listening to the second leg on the radio. Times have changed!
