McCarthy Wants More Goals From Bru
Friday, 27th Nov 2015 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy wants to see Kevin Bru join his midfield compatriot Jonathan Douglas on the scoresheet having been impressed by the Mauritius international’s finishing in training.

Bru, 26, has netted twice in his 30 starts and 15 sub appearances since joining the Blues in the summer of 2014 following a successful trial, the first in last season’s 4-2 home win against Birmingham and the second the opening goal of this campaign in the 2-2 draw at Brentford.

Douglas, who was 34 last Sunday, has scored in Town’s last two matches, the 5-2 victory at Rotherham and Saturday’s 2-2 home draw with Wolves.

McCarthy is confident that the Irishman can maintain that form in front of goal throughout the remainder of the season.

“No problem,” the Blues boss insisted. “The distance he covers has been [the most] of every player that we’ve played against over the last three or four games, that’s somebody of 34. You wouldn’t think that the amount of work he does.

“He got eight goals last year with Brentford, so I’ve no doubt he’ll get goals, he’s got good quality.

“We need more out of Bru. He’s been brilliant, Kev, but then get in the box. I watched him finishing with TC last Friday morning and he’s a fabulous finisher.

“He’s a great technical player Kevin Bru and he’s really added and helped us kick on with our performances and our results. Goals from there and we’ll be a lot better off.”

Yesterday was the final day on which Football League clubs were able to sign players on emergency loans with Luke Hyam’s temporary switch to Rotherham the most significant involving the Blues.

Right-back Josh Emmanuel moved to Crawley and keeper Michael Crowe to Stevenage, while striker James Alabi joined Grimsby the previous day. McCarthy had previously ruled out adding anyone to his squad.

He says the loan system works well for the Blues from both angles with Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Ryan Fraser on season-long loans from Arsenal and Bournemouth respectively.

“Of course it does,” he said. “We’ve had Ainsley Maitland-Niles here and he’s been great. He’s getting really good competitive games.

“He’ll certainly be a more-rounded player and a better player because he’s playing competitive football and he’s playing in a league which is different to the Premier League and different to the Champions League, which he’s played in.

“It’s a league which is competitive from back to front, all across the middle and everywhere else, not people letting you have the ball and playing in front of you, and I think he’s got used to that.

“We let players out that go and play and get games - Matt Clarke, James Alabi, Michael Crowe’s gone out now.

“Luke Hyam has gone out for different reasons, he’s been a good player for us, but he’s coming back from injury and if he can help Rotherham and it helps us get a player back to the level he was, then that’ll be great. I’ve no complaints, I think it works perfectly, the loan market.”

Really glad we signed Bru. A risk at the time by MM which has paid off. If he's fully fit he should be an automatic choice in our first 11.

Class player Bru. If you want more out of him and goals then play him in the middle more. Why like many other players is he being asked to play out of position, in Bru's case the right wing. Why have specialised wingers on the books but never play them? If you don't like wingers, why sign them in the 1st place?

one of my favourite players is bru. so composed on the ball, knows how to pick a pass and has that flair we need in the middle of the park!

He is possibly our most technically gifted player with the ball at his feet at the club. You might get more out of him if you play him in the centre. He is wasted out on the right, as is Sears on the left. Why not carry on with the 4 3 3 we were playing?!

Specialised wingers like Niles and Fraser you mean Cloddyseedbed?

Pretty sure Bru's was used more as a right midfielder than a right winger when he played there too and not sure i buy the argument that because he's on the right he'll score less than he would in the middle as it's not his 'natural' position.

We've been craving goals from central midfield now for years and Douglas has stepped up to the plate with a couple of excellent ones and could have had a 3rd if not for the woodwork so the question at the moment is do you drop Douglas for Bru or play Bru right midfield to have him in the side?

Seems to be MM has done the smart thing there Cloddyseedbed so probably more a positive than a negative right?

Thought Sears was outstanding playing left mid and carrying the ball in off the flank to get it on his right so i'm not too adverse to that either.

Keaneish if you like. I think you'll find Fraser is injured. Niles when he does play doesn't do enough or is told to push inside. On the books we have players that I thought were wide players. Oar, Henshall, Connoly, Toure? and Stewart. Apart from Oar/Toure none of the others are anywhere near the 1st team or in the case of Stewart at the club. Why doesn't Oar get game time on the right? Why can't we play specialist players in positions that they are comfortable in. My argument is I don't like players playing out of position, they don't perform to the best of their ability and I hate wide players when they do play told to push into the middle and defend for 80% of their game. It leads to negative boring football, that you seem to like. I don't. Hopefully tomorrow we'll steam roller Charlton with a breath taking performance, be clear winners and not walk away ruing missed chances and conceding cheap goals given away against the run of play. We can all but hope. All I hope is we do ourselves proud and not show up our inadequacy's in terms of defending and keeping the ball. I do agree with you on one thing Keaneish, Douglas has been better and looks dangerous when he is allowed to play further up the pitch. Too many midfielders that are better in the middle, but a lack of quality players that are comfortable in wide area's......but will do still have Tabby!

Thought Bru was disappointing In the last two home games, but no doubting he has class and frankly was played out of position Saturday. Whether Bru is that creative goal scoring central midfielder who will score 10-15 goals a season remains to be seen though.

........ Bru is a decent player - but I can't see him scoring too many goals - just not that type of player to my way of thinking.
