Chambers Walking Suspension Tightrope
Friday, 27th Nov 2015 11:07

Town boss Mick McCarthy has reminded skipper Luke Chambers that he heads for Charlton tomorrow just one yellow card away from incurring a one-game suspension.

But while Chambers admits he had overlooked the fact, he is adamant it will not lead to him altering his approach at The Valley for a game that kicks off at 12.30pm and will be played in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Chambers said: “I didn’t know I was on four bookings until I came in this morning and the gaffer pointed it out.

“He said that if I didn’t get booked again this year I would be clear again. I’ve only had that situation once in my whole career, where I’ve had five bookings and missed a game, and it’s not something I’ll be looking at doing.

“Middlesbrough next Friday night isn’t a game I want to be missing. I don’t think you could say I have a bad disciplinary record — I’ve only had a couple of sendings off in my career and both of them I completely disagreed with!

“But we don’t want to be a team that doesn’t make tackles or isn’t physical, which is what we possibly were after our first five games of the season. We weren’t tackling or getting about teams as much but we’ve been back at it in recent weeks.

“We went to Blackburn and they did to us what we usually do to teams. I think that was a bit of a wake-up call and we thought about it. Also, I think teams looked at us from last year and based their game on what we did to the opposition.

“It’s always going to be difficult the second season around. Over the Christmas period we’re going to have an even stronger squad in my opinion, with lots of options for the gaffer.

“We’re in a good place at the moment, albeit after a disappointment last Saturday when we only got one point from the game against Wolves, despite dominating it.”

Chambers is the only Town player currently on four bookings but Jonas Knudsen, Christophe Berra, Jonny Parr, Jonathan Douglas and Cole Skuse are all on three.

Dont worry about getting booked. You are not a right back, never will be and Parr does a better job.
How could a professional footballer not know how many bookings he's on?

Well... Most footballers do struggle when they get to three without the use of their hands...

Benching our captain and team motivator seems like a great idea...

hope he gets another yellow so we can play our best fullback

Have to agree with the above, Chambers missing a game would only strengthen the team. Parr is a far superior full back.

Could well be a case of MM's hand finally being forced on the defence.

Not to worry Luke. I f you miss a game your sub could put in a world class performance and you'll still be back out of place for the next one.

Interesting that in another item MM says he will play his best available back 4 at Charlton. Given the rate we're loaning defenders out, it'll soon be the only available back 4. One way to justify your selection I suppose.

Let's hope you get booked tomorrow then and they change the rules to a 6 month ban and then we can have a full back playing at full back. I know it's a totally unusual concept Mick but maybe just worth playing people in their correct positions. Give it a go. Can't be any worse than the abysmal back 5 that you stubbornly pick every game no matter how many mistakes they continue to make !!!

Morons ? Glad you're happy with the dross defence that keeps costing us points and the manager who picks his favourites in wrong positions no matter how many errors they make. Moron or realist. This is a forum for opinions not obscene comments about posters. Nice one tho Fixed_It !!!!

'Obscene comments'? Jeez! You are entitled to your opinion - but to wish for the captain of our team to get booked and banned for six months - well, in my opinion that is moronic!

When chambers picks up his next yellow card, 100% guaranteed he is going straight back in the team even if Parr gets 10 out of 10 for his performances. We all know, for some in that team ,does not matter how they play or how others play in their place they are always guaranteed their starting place. 'One rule for one and one for another!' Springs to mind.
