McCarthy to Utilise Loan Option
Tuesday, 2nd Feb 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that he could look to use the emergency loan provision available to Football League clubs both to augment his squad and to send some of his youngsters out to gain first-team experience.

“It’s there, it opens next Monday,” he said. “Tactically, I don’t think Premier League clubs always want to loan youngsters out to the end of the season, which they have to do [during the transfer window].

“They see what they’ve got in and then on Monday, they’ll have somebody they can loan out for 28 days and they might go and get some real competitive football at a Championship club for a month.

“And then they can bring them back and they’ll be in better shape to play. So they’ve not got shot of them for the rest of the season.

“Tactically for them - and I’ve been there and I’d do it myself now if that was the case - it suits them better.”

McCarthy says the likes of full-backs Josh Emmanuel and Myles Kenlock can go out for spells if someone wants them.

“They’re available but that’s going to be the emergency loan if anybody wants them,” he said. “Nobody’s banging my door down, which surprises me because I thought they’d be well worthy of a league club.”

Irish U18 international midfielder Adam McDonnell (pictured) can also go out for a stint: “I think he’s ready for it, Adam. I’d love to see him get somewhere.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy has wished striker James Alabi well for the future, the 21-year-old having left the Blues last week before joining Vanarama National League side Chester.

“He’s not ready for Championship football,” the Blues boss said. “We took him to make our U21s better.

“We’ve got a squad of players who play in the U21s where if you’ve got a couple of good ones that might get through you still need a centre forward who can play up there and run in behind and stick the ball.

“It was always a chance with James. He was a great kid, he used to come in and do everything we asked of him.

“He’s not good enough to get in my team but he made the U21s better and we didn’t have a centre forward at the time. He’s gone off and good luck to him, I hope he plays regularly.”

Please! We saw what happened last season when we failed to boost the squad (bar Sears). I get that we can't compete with the money people like Middlesbrough are spending. When you look at the likes of sheff wed getting mcgeady though, there's a little jealousy there for me.

If loans(what a shock!?) are all we are going to get to put pressure on the un droppable favourites then we are just going to stagnate into midfield obscurity unless our hard working strikers and wingers can bail us out and move us up the table, oh well I can only hope!! COYB.

So depressing. I normally look forward to a tuesday night under the floodlights but I 've really lost my Town mojo lately. Personally I don't think we have looked a good side all season. How we are flitting around the playoffs is a mystery. Please tell me I'm not the only one feeling like this!!

I have nothing against us using the loan market the way Mick has, as opposed to Paul Jewell's all and sundry approach.

From this time on last year, we added Woods/ Fryers/ Willliams which all resulted in +10 upwards comments on TWTD so that shows they were all worth grabbing ;)

If there is a good loaneee that will improve the squad, ala Fraser and Niles have so far, no issue with it whatsoever.

Who / position and from what club being the interesting one.

Best players loaned out already . it's ok to be laid back but asleep is the sign of a dinosaur.

Didn't Mick not want to go down the loanee route after clearing out a lot of loans when he first came here as manager, 2 of our most prominent creative players are on loan this season and now Mick says he's going down this route til' the end of the season. He's obviously forgotten this, makes you wonder what to believe.

Have read a lot of frustration at our lack of activity in the transfer window and I can understand it but I can't justify it. Our club does not generate enough income to spend big wages or transfer fees. Evans is not a front end sugar daddy - he's putting his hand in his pocket to keep the club afloat, not get stung like he did in the Keane era. Two ways of looking at it, we could take a punt, spend, not get promoted and maybe lose the club completely or we can accept that Championship is our level at the moment and do our best to get promoted with the resources available. With the finances outside the Prem more perilous than ever, I know what I'd choose.

Of course he "could" utilise the loan market, but nowhere in this piece does he say he's going to, or even that he is considering it.

Mick is very canny and usually keeps his cards close to his chest. The fact that we have parted company with Parr, Oar, Henshall, Alabi and brought in just Foley, would suggest that there is room for a loan or two. My expectations are on the floor though, so I won't be surprised if we do naff all.

Hmm,think u21's lost 9 on the trot whilst Alabi was playing, and yesterday won!

Good luck to the lad who should be a good acquisition for Vanarama National League.

When it says McCarthy will utilise Loan window, looks from narrative that he is looking to unload even more players although says he is surprised that nobody has come in for them.Could it not be Mick that your opinion on players being good is not shared by other managers.

MM on James Alabi ..."We took him to make our U21s better" - not sure James Alabi saw signing for us as that! What a waste of time signing him was!
