Hyam: I Want to Stay Here For as Long as I Can
Wednesday, 11th May 2016 15:32

Ipswich-born midfielder Luke Hyam says he wants to stay with his hometown club for as long as possible, hopefully helping them into the Premier League along the way, having signed a new Town contract taking him up to the summer of 2018 with an option for a further season earlier today.

The 24-year-old’s previous deal was due to end this summer, although the Blues had indicated that they would be taking up an option of a further year prior to the agreement of the new terms.

“This is where I’ve always wanted to be since I was at a young age,” the former Northgate High School pupil told Ipswich Player HD.

“I support the club and I want to stay here as long as I possibly can and obviously it would be nice to help Ipswich get promoted into the Premier League.

“When your contract is up at the end of the season it’s always a worrying time because you never know what will happen and you don’t want to be looking for another club on a free, but it’s nice to get it done and dusted so I can focus on my football.

“I’m delighted to stay and with another two years under my belt it’s nice to have a bit of security.”

Hyam, who made his debut in the 3-1 win at Middlesbrough on the opening day of the 2010/11 season and established himself as a first-teamer under Roy Keane’s management before drifting out of the picture during Paul Jewell’s time as boss, says he’s been happy since Mick McCarthy took charge in November 2012.

“With the manager and the players that are here, it’s really enjoyable and I think the club has been on the up since the manager came in,” he added.

“When he came in he said he would get rid of the deadwood and he brings in players with the right personality that will fit in with the team spirit.

“The close-knit group of lads we have here is really good and it shows on the pitch. Obviously we haven’t performed as well as we would have liked recently, but hopefully we can push on next season and get to the play-offs or even get automatic promotion.”

Sorry but really surprised he was offered a new deal

Skuse, Douglas and Hyam does not fill me with confidence for next season

Signed a new deal because his money grabbing agent could not find him another club!

easy option for the boy isn't it , remaining in his home town. Squad player. I'd rather have Foley in the middle.

We need a holding player Plus the use of Bish Dozzell? and Didsy ( forward MF role). Hyam role is best ( only?) suitable as holding just in front of back four. Question is who is the best MF for that position at the club?

This is great news.

He is still yoiung and does owe us really----he is one of our own and not an old age mercenary just looking for a final pay deal.

Good luck Luke and think you will surprise one or two people next season.

He is definitely No Joey Barton
even if ever attempts to be (that is, in his nightly dreams)
Just can't help but think he is a cheap option for McCarthy and saves his scouting team a job

Lets all just slag off a fully committed pro who loves the club shall we?

I do hope the players never read these pages. As much as some people might doubt his abilities, he always gives 100%. He started looking much better before his injury when he was beginning to look forward rather than sideways and hopefully he can continue to improve with encouragement and gaining some confidence. And yes, he's a cheap option but frankly, even if ME does open his wallet, we aren't going to be able to fill every position with new "million pound" players. I'd prefer him to Douglas any day.

I do remember mark noble having a torrid time having come through at West ham being a local boy.. Showed loads of promise then his career had a little blip (even came here on loan and but wasn't used properly.. Wide left) but now look at him flourishing in a team that plays good football! The key is to partner Hyam with someone who can pass the ball and score 10-15 goals a season from midfield! Now that ain't ya mr skuse or Douglas! At 24 he is no longer a 'prospect' and needs to knuckle down but if the club brings in the correct player to partner him in the middle I do feel it is a no brainer giving him a 2 year deal!

I'm delighted as well. We need to keep guys like Hyam, Smith and Bishop so that new kids like Dozzell will know they don't have to change teams to get on the pitch.

good luck luke only one way too shut the doubters up ...its happened to the best, i remember lampard getting pelters from england fans when he was younger i think he turned every one of them doubters round so you can do it as well ...town fans have always had someone who gets the brunt of their frustrations over the years...james scowcroft used to get it as well as others ...come back stronger next year and hopefuilly you can play with a bit more confidence and kick on!

For me ,i thought this season would be the making of Luke Hyam. But sadly it was not!
Playing in,what for me, is the weakest midfield Town have had since the Duncan era, Luke should have stood out.Running around and giving 110% for the team don't do it for me i,m afraid, he needed to show a lot more than that.
Next season is going to be a big one for him , in my opinion he has been given another chance he didn't deserve on pure ability.
If he rips up pre-season then play him but i feel he,s a squad player at best.
However i really would like to be proved wrong.

Fact is skuse is our holding midfielder and Hyam gives back up. Duggie is nearly 35 and doesn't have much time left in his legs. Bru is prone to fitness issues and a more offensive midfielder.

If we want to get the best out of bru, bish, didz and maybe dozzell we will possibly need two holding midfielders behind the attacking players. To give them the platform to play, plus hyam has the engine to do the donkey work for the midfield.
The more creative players a team has, the more important the defensive midfielders become!

I wish him well. I like him, but don't think Hyam, Skuse and Douglas as a three are the answer. Only one of those should start. We need to add creativity to the centre and goals in the summer. My concern of retaining the services of a Hyam is we won't bother and crack on with two defensive options. We won't get promoted without creativity.

Can we get a 'sensible haircut' clause in that cntract please.

No need to look silly now.

What? I know I am losing my hair but I am neither jealous nor am I a 'stick in the mud'. I just think this haircut looks silly.

I think this is a great signing. We couldn't replace him on our budget and he can only get better.

I like his work ethic. He is a credit to his profession.

Some may knock him for not being England quality, but if he was we would have sold him a long time ago. Happy to have him here (so ling as he sorts out his hair)

I think he's got good energy and in the right team can do a good job tackling, closing down etc
Hope I'm wrong I think he's a crock.

Dreadful haircut. Surely the senior pro should have a word- Oh- Its Chambers!
I'm too old

I am pleased because he obviously has the club at heart and although difficult to quantify that is a huge plus.
That said he has a lot to learn and at 24 still has time to do that. I think Hyam will have learnt much this year. How to deal with not playing regularly owing to injury or just not being picked. He will I am sure also have learnt about being not so rash in the tackle. He needs to curb the aggression somewhat and realise that eleven men on field is much better than us being reduced to ten.

I would like to see him play in front of the back four and see what he can do on his own without having the boring twosome Skuse and Douglas alongside. Maybe Hyam and Foley could be worth a try?

Just my thoughts which I know will not be popular with everyone.

great to have local players, however his goals/games ratio is very poor! also spends most of the game sorting his hair out.

I wouldn't be sad to see him go.

....... then learn to pass a ball FORWARD Luke - instead of your normal easy option.

Hope this player proves me wrong next season, but really has some work to do starting now - nowhere near the type of player we are sadly lacking in midfield.

Falls way short in so many ways - get on your toes Luke and prove otherwise. Hope it happens, but have my doubts.

Oh, and have a sensible haircut, stop the preening, and maybe you'll have a better vision.
Got to be a good starting point.

We were once a Club with much ambition - now laced with far too many 'sentimental friends' - who expect little or nothing - but nice.

Not exactly the sole objective in being successful - or escaping (eventually perhaps) the Championship.

I hope this is only as back up for Skuse. Both are defensive midfielders but currently Skuse is far better than Hyam and as has been proved on many occasions they do not work well together.

Whatever possessed us to give Douglas an option in his contract to stay another season I don't know but I'm not even counting him as offering anything next season!

....... midfield seems to be shaping up for next season already .......... Is the news so far GOOD ?

Not exactly going to entice people 'hovering' to renew - in my opinion.

RegencyBlue, I agree with you about Douglas and would like to think that he will play no part next season and do a Tabb by spending a lot of time on the golf course at our expense.
These ridiculous contract clauses need a serious re-think.

You didn't until we upped our offer, give me strength. Of course you do we're the only club this size that would give you anything like you want. Irate at us caving to you and an agents pressure, get some damn balls clubs players like Hyam dictating, what has the world come to.

Rant over now you have signed I'll support you - happy to have you in the squad, good luck next season.

Well he needs to seriously knuckle down in my opinion, I think he's very fortunate to be given a new contract, he just doesn't do enough in a match, he creates very little, & is a liability in a challenge, we need someone who isn't a hot head, you can understand it more when it's a youngster & they're still learning, but Hyam is 24 now, & should be setting an example.
Overall, poor decision to offer him a new contract.

carsey added 20:52 - May 11
I'm in the pleased camp with Hyam re-signing but agree he needs to step up next season, not collect yellow cards for stupid tackles, add some goals to his game and stop preening like a teenager.
I believe a decent coach should be able to direct his work rate and aggression in a way that is positive for the team and make him an asset rather than a liability.
As I write it looks like the Scum are confirmed as down and that will be just the type of game where a controlled Luke Hyam would be great but out of control we would soon be down to 10 men.
