Dozzell and Morris Help England U17s Into Quarter-Finals
Thursday, 12th May 2016 17:44

Town pair Andre Dozzell and Ben Morris helped the England U17s to a 3-1 victory over Denmark in their final group game at the European Championships in Azerbaijan to secure second place and a quarter-final against Spain in Baku on Sunday evening.

Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson put the Young Lions in front on the half hour, then Chelsea’s Mason Mount made it 2-0 on 51.

Two minutes from time England sub George Hirst, son of former Sheffield Wednesday frontman David, added to the lead before Jens Odgaard pulled one back for the Danes in injury time.

Dozzell and Morris both played the full 80 minutes and won their 15th and ninth U17s caps respectively. Blues keeper Nick Hayes was among the substitutes and didn’t add to his three caps.

Sweden, who beat holders France 1-0 in the other game, topped the group having finished equal on points with England but having beaten the Young Lions 2-1 in their opening match.

Elsewhere, on-loan Town defender Matt Clarke was left out of the Portsmouth 18 for their play-off semi-final first leg against Plymouth at Fratton Park this evening. The 19-year-old had been suffering with a groin problem.

England U17s: Thompson, Sterling (Brown 68), Feeney, Chalobah (c), Sessegnon, McGuane (Francis 76), Adeniran, Nelson (Hirst 73), Mount, Dozzell, Morris. Unused: Hayes, T Bola, Shashoua, Bohui.

So good to see England lads doing so well and great that Ipswich lads are at the centre of it.

Can only bode well for the future, provided we can hang on to them.
