Town Chiefs Decide Summer Plans
Wednesday, 18th May 2016 20:11

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’s talked to Blues owner Marcus Evans and they know the areas of the squad they will be looking to strengthen and have identified targets they want to recruit during the summer.

McCarthy has previously stated that wide players will again be high on his list, while Evans has said he will be willing to pay fees if required.

“I have spoken to Marcus. We have sat down and had a conversation,” McCarthy told the club site.

“We know the areas that we need to strengthen. It just depends on whether we can get the players we want into the club.”

The Town boss says he'd like his team to play more attractive football but says results are more important than style: “We’d all like to play better, free-flowing football.

“We did try and be more considered with the ball but there were times last season when we made 400 passes and lost and times when we made 180 and won.

“Leicester had fewer passes, less possession, made more tackles and had the best defenders and they are champions of England. No one is moaning there.

“It’s about what you do with the ball that counts. What we did with it last year was stick it in the net with a 27-goal striker [Daryl Murphy]. This year we didn’t do that.

“There was a lot of talk about style of football and changing it but no one said that last year when he reached the play-offs and were successful.

“Yes, we could have done better this season and there is no doubt that we missed our more creative players.

“That definitely had an impact but Marcus said to me the other day, don’t change what you are doing because it’s got us competing at the right end of the table for the last two or three years.”

400 passes? Touches maybe.... as it takes some players 4 or 5 touches to get the ball under control.

"It just depends on whether we can get the players we want into the club."

So all a bit up in the air then... that seems rather appropriate...

Well not really true Mick, as quite a few of us thought we should be trying to play more attractive football last season as well as this season. It just a bit easier to accept our style when we are winning of course. Nothing wrong with mixing it up, some long balls into the channels and some passing movements, keeps 'em quesing.

Time will tell. Certainly considerable strengthening is required, particularly in the midfield. Will we pay out on fees and be more competitive with wages if several clubs are looking at the same player, or will we make do with cheaper options such as Coke/Toure per last summer?

Mick's record of signing players cheaply has generally been very good, but wingers is the one area that keeps letting him down (Stewart, Henshall, Oar; Anderson not too bad but still released, Hunt released partly due to age). I would say it is time to spend fees on the right young players, who after all may make a huge profit if they succeed due to the crazy money Premier League teams will pay. I would prefer to see us buy one quality player this summer and use our own youngsters than more squad fillers.

McCarthy is not the man for the task of searching out new players he has failed miserably over the past seasons just ask yourselves how many players he has brought to the club who could play in the Premier League for that is the ultimate aim it's not just to mark time in the championship had McCarthy got any honour he would have resigned

Why does he keep mentioning Leicester and Town. They played some great stuff. If he thinks we are like them he really has lost it.

When we reached the play-offs we all knew we played long ball football but you can get away with it when you're successful.

I hope that he can change the playing style but can a leopard change his spots? Hopefully yes.

It will be interesting to see if we change our overall strategy that has been applied for the last two years. We really have lived off free transfers with relative success. If Mick is given some money to spend, he won't waste it. I can't comprehend the youngsters being the answer either. Of course I'd rather see Benyu and Dozzell in the team than some of our more experienced back up players. But complete reliance on youth next season is not the way forward.

Yeah, right. I distinctly remember writing a blog last year about how dire the football was, despite the fact we were winning games. As for this season, i do remember Leicester attacking with pace and flair, I don't remember us doing that. Wrong comparison Mick.

More spin to sell season tickets ? ...... or will there be action to compliment the words ?

Time will tell - don't be surprised if we haven't signed a soul a week before the season starts, although several will have left the club.

Interesting .... !!!

We would have made playoffs this season if you had gone for it home. Playing Skuse and Douglas together was criminal, two the poorest Midfielders in the championship. Bru should have played more or Foley who done well when played there, only to be dropped when your Favorite sideways or backwards Skuse was fit. Do us a favour play Dozzell, Bishop or Mcdonnell , Bru there next season. Also the young full backs should play. Young players will only improve if they are playing.

The strategy has to be Quality over quantity, with the kids coming through we have plenty of cover in most positions. Would rather see us target 3 players who will make a real difference, that are better than we already have than 10 players just to add numbers.

Well that sets us up nicely for next season with more scintillating and fast flowing football to look forward from our tactical genius,...can't fathom his comparison with Leicester City as their style of football is entirely on another planet to our hoofing style. The foxes mount more attacks in a 45 minute half than we do in 8 matches..who does he think he is kidding? His words suggest more hooffball but should we be surprised?

Poor negative selection cost us and two disastrous cup exits which led to bad form in the league afterwards or we would have made the playoffs .
This rubbish about spending has been rolled out for the last few years but never happened so why should we believe this year is any different .
MM will still Pick the same back four next season and Skuse and Douglas because they have all ben terrific and brilliant all year

Just one so far - Tyrone Mings

But then we don't want to be providing players for Premiership Clubs. We do have players who could do a job in the Premiership. You only have to look at the likes of Damien Delaney & Gareth McCauley to see that a good Championship player can have a future in the Premiership. We have some talent in our squad who might be capable of being Premier League players.

Where I agree with you is that we don't currently have even half a team, let alone a squad, capable of disturbing the Premiership elite if ever we got that far.

Would someone tell me which players McCarthy has signed to be a success Bart ,Berra and Sears some think McGoldrick is but he has done nothing for 2 seasons apart from spitting his dummy out after not getting his move to Leicester he must even more upset after there season so don't hold out a lot of hope this close season

Bialkowski, Mings, Berra, Skuse, Sears, Murphy and McGoldrick were the best ones, and Gerken, Knudsen, Pitman were decent enough signings. Williams and Fraser notable loans. Plenty of so-so players and flops, but when you've peanuts to spend...

400 passes ??? Never. U must be counting hoofs Mick !!! The areas that need strengthening are the defence the midfield and the attack. As for Evans "carry on what you're doing" is that the name for a new slapstick comedy film??? For Christ sake do NOT carry on that dross dinosaur.

There were many complaints about the style last season. It got worse this season coz u played ur love children every week no matter how sh1te they were and even worse u played them out of position. You're clueless. Do one.

You might be saved by the crop of kids we have coming through. Or will u teach them to hoof it too ?? And will they get to play or will the dross journeymen still play even when they've proved they're not good enough !!!!

Broadly speaking, Mick doesn't need to change much of what he's been doing. But Evans certainly needs to change his performance.

You need two types of squad
1. Tough , in yer face workaholic type to get you out of this division

2. A skill , comfortable on.the ball, able to run, see a pass, control the ball with first touch, take the one opportunity in the game that comes along, and be able to defend against very quick clever opponents....to compete in the PL eg quality in EVER position.

You don't usually have the second attributes in a team assembled on a shoe string or even with money when building a Championship winning side.

The game in CC and PL is vastly different and is a primary reason why scum do so badly when get promoted. They are essentially a strong Championship side.
