Town Frontrunners for Feeney
Thursday, 2nd Jun 2016 12:08

Town are leading the chase to sign former loanee Liam Feeney and are expected to sign the 29-year-old on a permanent basis, despite interest from other Championship clubs.

While reports that Feeney is imminently set to sign are premature, we understand that the Blues are very much the frontrunners to land the winger when he becomes a free agent at the end of his Bolton deal on June 30th, fighting off competition from Birmingham City amongst others, and it would be a surprise if he isn't a Town player next season.

Feeney, who is currently away on holiday, joined Town on loan in March and made seven starts and two sub appearances, scoring once.

Speaking on the final day of the season, manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that the Blues were in talks with Feeney regarding a permanent deal.

“We’re talking to him and we’re talking to his agent,” he said. “I’d like him to stay and he would like to stay and if we can come to a mutually beneficial deal then that’s what will happen. If we don’t, then we won’t.”

Meanwhile, the deal which will see Portsmouth’s Adam Webster join Town and Matt Clarke and a significant fee move in the opposite direction remains close to being confirmed.

The switch, which TWTD first reported a fortnight ago, is all but done, however, we understand some minor paperwork is still outstanding.

I guess he'll be hoping for a 3 year deal. If it develops into an auction, doubt he will come to Town but hope we have other irons in the fire as not totally convinced about Feeney.

Very good news all round.Just hope we manage to sign Webster.Would also be good to sign Feeney, but if we don't then so be it as I'm sure MM has other players in mind. Most players are now on holiday so we just have to be patient.!!

good addition, perhaps more Anderson than Fraser but he brings something. Could do with a Fraser though

A good signing (if we get him) but we need 3/4 real key signings if we are going to challenge. Feeney would be an excellent squad player - and much better than Toure, Varney, Coke, Tabb etc - so from that perspective very good news for the League and FA Cups!

May not be a popular view but I'd rather not have him

Will no doubt be a top earner at the club given his wage at Bolton. Has not impressed me enough to justify high wages.

He is another average run of the mill journeyman, we don't need him. We need someone who will help us into the Premier League and not give us mid table mediocrity. If we are signing someone let's hope Mr Evans gets the cheque book out and signs a better quality player or three/four for that matter!!

We've lost quite a few players in the last few weeks. We should be grateful that we may have a new addition. He's no Fraser but he's got a very accurate cross on him and with enough support in midfield he may prove a shrewd signing.

Hopefully Smith and Foley will be next in line. Smith said he would make his mind up at the end of the season and that's some time ago now.

Moan moan moan. I thought he was good and just the sort of player we need hope we sign him

Very direct player and if we are sticking with Murphy as our main striker then the early crosses from Feeney will suit the tactic of hitting the target man and build from there. Not my favoured style of play but can see how it suits Mick.

Whatever happened to Pritchard from Tottenham? - he had a great season for Brentford the season before last but seems to have gone off the radar - always thought he was similar to Fraser - we need someone of that ilk.

Lightningboy - I agree re Pritchard as excellent playerbut we have no chance. FYI was injured last season but by all accounts Spurs will sell. Sky & papers say all they want is £8m...

Not thrilled about the prospect of signing him either, he was on a reported £15k p.w at Bolton so is going to command ( as a free ) a similar wage sadly in this day and age of clubs at this tier spending way more ££££ than they receive.....

A decent squad player though - if he were to accept a decent but not mad starting wage with significant top ups for apps / goals / assists then I'd be quite for the move.

Can't help but feel there are better quality wingers in the league below.

Was far from impressed with him first half at Sheff Weds and he certainly doesn't appear to have the pace he once had.

Based on what I saw of Pringle I was far more impressed with him as a player - however assume his basic wage at Fulham is pretty ridiculous and he didn't seem to line up at the end so I assume this is a nonstarter.

Currie10 - just because he commanded a wage of £15k a week 2 years ago doesn't mean he will get anything like that now, especially as he's now 29 & as you say, doesn't appear that quick & may be losing pace.

We definitely need a pacey direct winger like Fraser who can beat his man and make things happen. My only reservation is that the legs of wingers tend to go earlier than central midfielders and strikers.

Don't think I would offer him a three year deal but rather two.

Not convinced, from watching him last season, he is what we need. He wasn't consistent enough and disappeared in games. If we are going to have a player of that type I would rather he was an attacking midfield/creative player than a touchline hugger. His stats care of statbunker.com 9 games, 7 starts, 1 goal, 1 assist. Not worth a deal in my opinion

Neither Pringle or Feeney showed enough to be signed on especially because they have been on very high wages and would not be worth the investment. Feeney in particular did contribute enough in the games he played and disappeared for long periods. We definitely need at least two wide players but not these two thanks.

waste of time, compared to Ryan Frazer.. forget this and find younger hungrier types in league 1 and 2.. if our scouts are not up to it, move them on...

It matters not a jot what he was on at Bolton, as he is older now and has been released by them so he will earn what the market pays him which will be a fraction of his former wage. I would be pleased to see him sign for Ipswich if Mick wants him, but he doesn't overly excite me.

A decent addition to the squad and can only assume he has dropped his wage demands from the rumoured £17K a week he is on at Bolton. Good player but not convinced he would be a certain starter.

Up til now didn't hear about transfers til done and dusted;so not so happy for these to be out in open, and dragging on.Previously when this happened under Jewell especially, didn't always land the player.

Hope this wont be the case with Webster especially, whos transfer talk I know came from Pompey end;so hope it is just that everybody involved is on holiday.

Well what do you think he's going to get offered then, granted it may not be quite £15k but with being a free agent and the likes of Forest/ Blackburn / Fulham / QPR/ Leeds not thinking twice of paying 15-20k to any old bang average player I'd be amazed if he had to take too much of a wage cut.

Not convinced people are too in touch with how out of control the wages are in this league. Our wage bill is apparently up £4 mill based on a few years ago.

Have to say at 29 years old i would want a player to be a nailed on first team player not a squad player im sure there is younger better gems out there. MM and scouts get out there an do what you are paid for. On another point lovely to see George Burley and John Wark at the Suffolk show real Town legends, saw Milne hanging around wanted to tell him to move on he was lowering the tone.

Agree with a few others - after an initial decent display against Rotherham (second half) his form since that when when starting was ok but nothing startling. I'd prefer for us to be looking elsewhere I don't see him as the future.

Wasnt convinced by him if I am honest, maybe trying too hard to impress?, but I would like him to stay as he looks like he needs a good pre season, now he's settled in, next year might just be his year. I do hope so!
