Blackburn Confirm Feeney Signing
Saturday, 25th Jun 2016 10:38

Blackburn Rovers have confirmed the signing of former Town loanee Liam Feeney. The 29-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with an option for a third season following his release by Bolton.

As TWTD previously reported, Feeney had agreed a permanent deal with the Blues but was subsequently offered very significantly better terms by Rovers, where he was previously on loan in 2014.

Feeney joined Town on loan in March and made seven starts and two sub appearances, scoring once.

Not that disappointed. Would rather a 23-25 year old, more speed and more passion. Less wages would also be a bonus!

Surprise, surprise.
Not sure he's a great loss but only a 2 year deal so an indication of our resources.

I think that most won't be disappointed that Feeney won't be signing, but clearly the bigger issue here is that Blackburn are able to offer very significantly more in terms of wages than us. It suggest that yet again we are well behind where you need to be in order to attract the better quality players. It's one thing agreeing terms with a player in division two, but if we really want to sign championship experienced players, we may need to reconsider our strategy.

Good ...........move on , there's better , younger , hungrier players around that we need for less demanding wages too !

We made an offer that was acceptable to the guy until Blackburn came in and offered over the odds. Would anyone really want us to counter that with an improved offer for a relatively average player? If we could get Harriot that would be far more exciting in my view.

Blackburn have been busy so far and have signed Stokes, Graham and now Feeney. They should have a better season this time out. I think he was pretty decent, but if we do go for Harriott then that will be quality.

The article says better terms which might not necessarily mean just wages but also length of contract. Blackburn giving him 2 years plus option of a third, perhaps we only offered 2? I think there is a negative assumption that most other teams offer better terms than us. The fact Feeney apparently agreed to join us then changed his mind means he wasn't 100% wanting to come here. He was a reasonably good player but by no means a world beater & not worth paying over the odds for. We move on & if we could get Harriott I would be a lot happier

Ipswich Town have never thrived on paying high wages to players toward the end of their careers. It's been shrewd observation of younger players in lower league clubs or recruitment for the academy and the odd, usually, Dutch foreign player. Feeney was clearly not the loyal tractor boy we wanted. What concerns me more really is the recent spate of signings not working out and being released. Mialczyk, Cononley, Hewitt etc..

Good. The league table from last season tells you all you need to know about Blackburn's level of judgement.

We dodged that one.

Would have been average at best.

Well done Blackburn for paying over the odds

Bluetractor73 - I think that's very harsh. Feeney owes us nothing. He has no allegiance to Ipswich, we took him on loan and he didn't start every game. He has now been offered better terms elsewhere. Would you not do the same?
I'm not particularly bothered, good luck to him but Harriet or someone of his ilk would be a better option.

One thing about this deal is his family will not need to move home. So if they are settled in there current home, there will be no moving costs and settling into a nee area.

Thought someone like Milne said that the reason we have not made big money signings was due to the wages we pay the the playing staff!! Now Blackburn have done us. In all fairness I wouldn't mind if Norwich, villa or Newcastle did something like that purely on their Premiership and parachute payments, given they more than likely have more spare cash readily at hand to offer better deals. Anyway on a different note. Scotland to go alone?!?!?

Anybody going Coggeshall town away for the pre season friendly. If so and you have a youngster who wants to play Sunday football, they gave a great youth team set up. I can meet you there and introduce you to the guy who runs it.

Runaround

From what I'm told he was offered wages at Blackburn which blew the offer here - and from other clubs - out of the water. That being the case, can't really blame him at 29 for taking that deal.

What I'm more concerned about is a team who had a transfer embargo last ear can spunk big wages less than six months later! Yet more total disregard for FFP! Are we the only ones playing by the rules?!

Jas0999,we are behind others when it comes to attracting bigger players! Feeney agreed terms so we were clearly able to attract him here, but then got offered more by Blackburn. The fact he'd supposedly said he wanted to move back south but has subsequently gone there suggests he's just a money grabber. Which to be fair, at his age u can't blame him for I suppose.
