Town Tipped to Land Former Trialist
Sunday, 26th Jun 2016 10:19

The Blues are reportedly favourites to sign Hitchin Town right-back Kane Smith, who spent time on trial at Playford Road in February.

According to The Non-League Paper, Town are leading the chase for the 19-year-old, who featured for the U21s in the 6-1 thrashing of Bristol City.

Terry Barratt, chairman of Hitchin, who play in the Evo-Stik Southern League, believes the youngster has great potential: "Kane is a player who is attracting the attention of people and he has been outstanding for the club. If he does leave it will be well-earned. He's an exciting player to watch out for."

Prior to his stint with Town, Smith spent time on trial with West Brom and Crystal Palace, featuring for the Eagles’ U21s, while Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton, Brighton, Reading, West Brom and Bristol City have all also been reported to be keeping tabs.

Smith joined Hitchin from Biggleswade Town in December 2014, having previously been with Luton’s youth set-up.

A midfielder earlier in his career, Smith broke into the Hitchin side early in 2015 and quickly made an impression.

A pure bred right back?
Now that would be good!

Sounds interesting, I wonder what this means for Emmanuel or Chambers?

More competition for places can only be a good thing, we weren't exactly solid at the back last season.

Bearing in mind we cant compete money wise with upto 10 teams probably in this division i would rather we took a punt on younger lads like this guy and Harriott. Avoid jaded has beens if possible.

I don't think we should be salivating at this just yet.

Should he sign he'd be well down the pecking order as chambers isn't likely to be ousted for a couple more seasons, unless either smith or berra depart and chambers is moved to central defence.

This story is a s exciting as watching a snail racing tag team compete in the olympics
Tomorrow is supposedly the cut off regarding Digby's situation and whether he's joining or he returns to Barnsley as their player.

Agree with all posters above. Like it or not, we can't compete wage wise with most of the other teams in our division. Our one real hope is to discover gems (Vardy style) from the lower leagues and giving them a chance to shine.

It's not ideal for the players, as they take more time than usual to settle in (going up five or six divisions overnight is bloody hard!) but this is their chance to make it. These players will be desperately hungry to make a mark and make a career and we are giving them that one shot.

I hope our scouts consider some of the players from the Euro's too. The Northern Ireland keeper is out of contract and he's been solid. We need to find a few players with that kind of pedigree to add experience to the squad.

I wonder if this adds to the speculation that Berra will be off. Chambers could then move over leaving right back free.

It could be he is being signed as a back up though. As he had a trial here he will know the set up.

Sounds like a good player especially with so many teams watching him. Not sure how the academy players hoping to move up will view it or whether we can match the wages of the other teams.

I'm told were looking at the Hungarian lad Nagy, anyone else hearing that?

Looks like one of their better players to me

One for the future but probably not in short term, so let's hope MM and ME are currently planning to significantly strengthen the midfield with real quality.

Sounds promising;but I don't suppose any of us have seen him, unless it was here on trial, when we never took him on ?

P JewellisaGod,why cant we now compete with most of the other teams in our division any more then?

I thought when ME took over this was supposed to be our salvation, and now according to you ITFC are reduced to' shopping at Poundland '.

I wouldn't imagine like you and others that he would go straight into the 1st team;but what about Josh Emmanuel who has looked ok to me on theodd occasion Mick has allowed him to play.

Dav86.Agree with you but Kenlock would replace Knudsen

Good to see looking at younger players rather than 30+ "experienced" journeymen - tinged with slight reticence & worry that hope it doesn't block our own academy players development - but reckon in the short term this is more of an u21:squad signing ...... hoping for development ...... than an immediate 1st teamer.

We were among the ctop wage payers in the championship last season so we can compete. But we do have too limit for what we will pay, and rightly so.

I don't want us to sign Nagy, purely because when his name is pronounced it sounds like Nodge.

Seasider:

You know there has been a huge discussion on this already so I will just forward the 2015 link (figures for 2016 will be released in August). Insiders expect Derby, Huddersfield and Wednesday to be above us (in terms of wage spending for 2016). I'm certainly not suggesting that wages creates success (Derby, Wednesday case in point) but it's fairly obvious that we will not have the financial power of the likes of Newcastle, Norwich, Aston Villa, Forrest, Leeds, Birmingham, QPR, Blackburn, Fulham, Cardiff etc.
