Murphy and Ireland Bow Out of Euros
Sunday, 26th Jun 2016 16:30

Daryl Murphy and the Republic of Ireland bowed out of the European Championships at the last 16 stage after France came from behind to beat them 2-1 in Lyon this afternoon.

Murphy, 33, who was winning his 23rd full cap, made his second start of the tournament and again impressed — he was involved in the build-up to the incident which led to Robbie Brady putting Ireland ahead from the penalty spot in the second minute — before being replaced by ex-Town skipper Jon Walters in the 65th minute.

France subsequently netted twice through Antoine Griezmann in the 57th and 61st minutes before Ireland were reduced to 10 men when Blackburn’s Shane Duffy was red-carded as the Atlético Madrid striker went through on goal looking for his hat-trick.

Murphy, whose other appearance at the competition came in the 1-0 victory over Italy, is the first Town player to have appeared at a European Championships since Claus Thomsen represented Denmark at Euro 96

12thMan.Surely,as implied by your post, you don't mean that he should report with the others tomorrow, especially as Murph has said he has only managed 1 weeks holiday away.

I know the last time this happened he came back jaded after having come back late;but he will have to be given at least 3 to 4 weeks I would have thought, otherwise at 33/34 he will suffer burn out in the second half of the season.

Well done Daryl, very proud of u and the rest of the Irish team. feel sorry for Duffy. Hendrick really stepped up a level and will be formidable in Derbys team next season.

At least didz will be fresh for new season. Robbie Keane will probably retire leaving a spot in Irish squad for didz. Big season for him!

I think it's quite clear that Murph's performances last season (particularly in the final third of the season) were due to his mind being on events this summer. Let's hope now he's performed well, that he can get back the form he showed the season before last.

Murph played well against the French but did look knackered when he came off. Needs at least a month to regain freshness.
Heard on Sky Sports this morning that the Irish team are very short on young strikers coming through, Keane is 36, Murphy 33 and Long is 29. McGoldrick is also 29 so hopefully he will have at least 4 years of Internationals and maybe help get them to the World Cup in 2018.
