McCarthy Not Broken-Hearted to Miss Out on Feeney and Says Bishop Could Play Wide
Saturday, 2nd Jul 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he's "not broken-hearted" that former loanee Liam Feeney opted to join Blackburn rather than the Blues and says Teddy Bishop could come into his thinking to play in a wide role during the season ahead.

Feeney, 29, had initially agreed terms with Town following his release by Bolton Wanderers but subsequently received a very significantly more lucrative offer from Rovers, where he was previously on loan in 2014.

“I tried to sign him, but I’m not broken-hearted,” McCarthy said. “I wanted to sign him but if he doesn’t want to come to me it’s his loss, that’s the way I always look at it. We’ll get somebody else.

“He was wanting to come down but I think he played for Owen Coyle anyway and maybe the fact that he was at Bolton [meant geographically] he can go and sign for Blackburn.

“He better play well for Blackburn, by the way, because they’re not the best of friends with Bolton! I tried to do the deal but if it’s not to happen, we’ll move on and do something else.”

McCarthy says adding to his wide options remains his priority but believes he has players already in his squad who can play in those roles.

“I have to say, wingers are few and far between. Liam Feeney’s gone off the Blackburn. But I’ve had Bish play at the right-side of midfield before and if he stays fit, who’s to say that he can’t do that? He’s quick enough to do it, he’s got more ability than Liam, there’s no question about that.

“We may have to do something slightly different. It might not be wingers it might be midfield players.

“But I’m cool with that. What is always interesting and excites me is whatever you end up with, because we’re not just going to go out there and spend loads of money and pick who we like, you do something with what you have, you manage the players that you’ve got and you evolve with that team. That’s always exciting for me, I kind of like that.”

He is bothered. You can tell, but all managers have to devise a system to suit the players he's given.

Well, theres our 2 wingers, saved millions and gained 2 wingers in bishop and stewart... Again, not necessarily a bad thing...

Square pegs again innit.....we'll never progress with MM's "so be it" laid back approach.

I still have a hunch that it's Mick choosing not to spend money, instead of ME not making any funds available, which makes the outlay on Webster even more confusing

The Idea of more square pegs again this season is worrying, but to be fair to McCarthy here what else can he say at this time. Presumably there is truth to the link for the lad from Charlton & he is looking at other options for the wings, but in the absence of any deals yet he has remain calm & not show his hand.

MM wanting to play another player out of position before the seasons started !

This isn't good news nor great reading. MM seems somewhat frustrated to me. Clearly Bishop isn't a winger and it's remarkable that we still haven't got any at the club. First it's rely on the kids and now it's make do with the current small squad and play folk out of position. Not at all good. Next we will here that 'cokey' is fit and will start as our star new left sided winger! '

DO NOT PLAY BISHOP ON THE RIGHT!!!

Please just sign a proper right midfielder instead. Why to we insist on playing people anywhere just to fit them into the team!

Precisely sidtheswan!! We are going nowhere with this cluless dinosaur. Same old boring rhetoric!!

So what he's saying is instead of us signing a natural right winger, we'll just throw our most creative central midfielder out there instead. This better not happen. The first thing he addressed when he took over from Jewell was players playing out of position (Edwards at right back). Imagine our right hand side with Chambers at right back and Bishop right wing!! Ridiculous.

I've got an idea Mick. Why don't we start the season with Daryl Murphy as our new goalkeeper?!!

Am i glad i chose not to renew-first he tells us Chambers is his right back ,now bishops his right winger, why not put Gerken up front.

From just a few interviews with Mick over the past few days i get the feeling we're in for another long frustrating season!

Good luck to you idiots who renewed your season tickets hope you enjoy 3 defensive midfielders and everyone else playing out of position MCarthyOUT

Last season we missed Bishop & Mcgoldrick. Clearly if fit then we wouldn't seen Douglas & Skues together. Lets hope that our best players remain fit, because the reserves certainty are not good enough

If there was one thing to learn from England's Euros was not to play people out of position . Bishop is our best central midfielder so build the team around him . But then we would have to drop Skuse or Douglas which will mean MM admitting he was wrong last year

Guthrum added 10:04 - Jul 2
If he's talking about the wide midfield men in a 4-3-3, then Bishop has played there before, with success. We also potentially have Dozzell and others, including Bru, to be creative up the middle. Can't fit them all in CM at once.

I wonder if there is a connection between a moaner and a Brexiter?
Q. How many Brexiters does it take to change a lightbulb?
A. ''I never said there was a light bulb!''

As usual many seem to be misinterpreting Micks and word and shouting about it loud enough that it might stick.

No where does he say he wants to play TB out wide, nowhere does he say he intends to do so. What he is saying is he might have too if circumstances go that way which is very different. But let's not let the truth cloud anyone's agenda hey?

Are we shopping in the bar gin basement again? Yes but i ask where does the money come from

We could Breach FFP and receive an unknown and unquantifiable punishment. The QPR case still appears to be dragging on so who knows what doing so would mean. You moan now but how much more would you moan If we couldn't sign players, not saying that would be the case, just saying it could be and until we know why risk it?

QPR breached FFP went up for a bit and now despite that still seem to have cash problems. Players not playing because the club can't risk triggering extension and bonus clauses. How much would you lot wang on if Mick couldn't play Sears in case it meant him activating a pay rise or contract extension?

Besides which money doesn't necessarily solve the problem, Derby have pi$$ed how much up the wall on transfers and wages overy recent seasons, where has that got them? Biggest chokers in the league with a board that sacked the manger for being too ambitious. But we'll ignore that and just focus on the money they spend because that suits an anti Mick/Anti Evans agenda and as we often see actual facts often get on the way of making ones points.

The fact is the amount the club can spend is limited, limited to its turnover and it's in commings. We already have a turnover that is 6th lowest in the league, that's in itself is an indication of where the club is financially, now many of you have decided to compound that by not renewing your season tickets meaning even less money going through the club which will inevitably slowly reduce the budget further if it becomes a trend. So the club's lack of spending power is on you me and every town fan out there as much as it is Mick and Evans.

Free transfers are not a bad thing, look at the players (and volume of players) that become available each year, free does not mean that value you should not be attached. Half Robson Kanu (who I'd love to sign but will probably be a premium player next year) is a free transfer, does that mean he's not worth anything? No.

Given that we've Laid out 700k already plus a yougster who must be work at least 200k going out with it maybe the club warrents a little slack. Especially as Evans always pumps the full 3 million in to the club that the rules say he can.

What I find stager than anything else that so many sat through the dross of Keane and project relegation that was Jewel (when we regularly took a tonking) and draw the line at watching us under a man who has delivered 7th, 6th and 7th respectively, closer than anyone since Royle to taking us up.

Not at Keanes shambolic management, not at PJ,s taking us to the brink, no. We'll draw the line at actually being in the top half of the table for a change. Why? Well it's not pretty enough. Precious.

I'm not saying all is right, I agree Mick can be stubborn and no, not pretty. The club could be more innovative. But Mick has delivered the best seasons (and consistently) we have had in a long time, despite being hamstrung by FFP and there is an element in football of playing the hand you get.

Also PHILTWTD, I can't see Mick mention CS at all.in the article, are you reading between the lines or did Mick actually reference him and suggest he might still have a part to play?

I respect your view however I am not sure that many people are asking for us to smash up financial fair play. However most would appreciate a balanced squad and playing people on merit in their best positions.
The frustration many may feel at this story could be that a change of philosophy was hoped for and I for one expect any Ipswich team to attack when at home and try their best in cups.
This story makes me feel that perhaps not much has changed over the break.

I hope MM has some transfers up his sleeve and we can all enjoy the new season but we have have not played good football consistently during the reign of last 3 managers and perhaps some are just worn out at the thought or merest suggestion of playing our most attacking cm out on the wing.
After all, the excuse for not reaching playoffs was that we didn't have him in central midfield for nearly all of last season.

Here we go, take our most creative player out of the middle of the park, what to accommodate Douglas and Skuse centrally? I'm worried for next season already.

I'd like to see us playing 442 with Murphy and Sears up front together and McGoldrick at the top of the diamond and Bishop on the right and Bru on the left and Skuse at the bottom of the diamond.

Bish used to cut in from wide in the youth team. Probably his best position imo. Would much rather play him there than stewart.
