Stewart Travels With Squad to Ireland
Monday, 4th Jul 2016 16:52

Out-of-favour winger Cameron Stewart was included in the Town squad which flew out to Ireland for the annual training camp at the Carton House Hotel in Co Kildare this morning, TWTD understands.

Stewart’s Town career looked to have ended before it had begun in earnest having made just two 2014/15 FA Cup sub appearances since signing for the Blues in the summer of 2014.

The 25-year-old, pictured above with Tommy Smith, Adam McDonnell and Cole Skuse, spent last season on loan at Doncaster Rovers after being made available in pre-season having been left out of the Ireland training camp. In April, Manager Mick McCarthy reiterated his intention to allow the Mancunian to move on.

However, last week McCarthy, whose squad is currently short of wingers, said Stewart could work his way back into his plans having impressed him with his level of fitness on the first day of pre-season training, adding that if the one-time Manchester United trainee impressed him during the rest of the week he would take him to Ireland.

“There’s been a bit of interest in him, but he’s done his bleep test and he’s come back really fit this time, so I didn’t have to fall out with him!” McCarthy said last Tuesday.

“If he’s of that mind and he wants to work hard and be involved in the squad and be fit then I’ll take him to Ireland and we’ll see because he’s got ability. But there has been a bit of interest in him.”

Asked whether the slate had now been wiped clean, he added: “Not quite a clean slate, clean-ish. He came back on the first day and did well, so that’s the first day, but he’s got a lot of work to do. I’d love him to do it and to be a success, but that’s down to him.”

Midfielder Kevin Bru travelled with the squad after being given additional time off having been away with Mauritius, while Daryl Murphy will join-up with his team-mates next Tuesday after they have returned from Ireland, following his time at the Euros.

Recent signings Adam Webster and Paul Digby also made the trip but Giles Coke remained behind as he continues his rehab after undergoing knee surgery towards the end of last season.

It’s understood one or two youngsters are likely to fly out to augment the squad ahead of Saturday’s first pre-season friendly against Shelbourne at Tolka Park, Dublin (KO 3pm) when McCarthy is likely to play a different XI in each half.

With respect to Stewart, although it would be great if he turned into a top player for us this season, you can't help but feel he has been included as we have no other recognised wingers and we are six or seven squad players down on last season. Good luck to him though.

Agreed, no big money sale this year and 700k already spent!!! I'm sure there will one or two more inspired signings, there has to be surely??

Mind you this is Ipswich we are talking about.

Do not know if this is True, but have heard rumours ( McGoldrick) has been touted about to another club because of his high wages ?????? as I say again it is rumours.

I think we now have a clear sense of what happened with Stewart. He came back out of shape last summer and that would not go down with well Mick.

Hopefully this season he has got a but more determination and so Mick has said fair do's go and prove me wrong, which personally I think reflects well on Mick.

Of couse if he could get a better winger in CS will see chance limited but that applies to ever player.

Always trade up.

1.5£ for Didz ??? Great piece of biz holding onto him when Leicester bid between 7-11 mill (whatever it was) well done. Can't honestly believe we sell him for that. Our most creative player by a distance this would just about finish most supporters off !!! Preston North End !!!! More money more ambition more attractive than Ipswich ?????? If all true then yet again proof that the people running our club are a joke !!!! Not a positive post sorry Pragmatic. Let's see you or anyone put a positive spin on this rumour !!! Agreed it's only a rumour at mo.

You know it's a sh1t season already when the pre-season condition and movements of Cameron Stewart represent newsworthy reports.

Ridiculous rumour, high wages maybe what makes anyone think Preston would pay him more

Preston have signed 7 players this pre season. Including Ben Pringle. Can't see them wanted McGoldrick. However, they can afford Pringles wages and we can't?

Or maybe we didn't want PRINGLE

No, I think Mick stated it was unlikely a deal could be done. Wages I believe. Could be wrong. Personally I'm not worried we missed out/didn't sign him. But PNE has signed some high earning players. No doubt.

It's a RUMOUR. Let's go wibble IF it happens. Rumours hardly reinforce a view that the club is a joke.

Time for Cameron to earn his stuff...time for him to pay back what he was bought for. He is ours, now it is time that he works hard and becomes a star.

PNE are spending a fair amount on new players and wages but the McGoldrick rumours aren't really that credible (yet). I would be genuinely shocked to find out that it's true as he is our best player on his day (fit and in-form). Have PNE got more promotion potential than us? I doubt it. It would be in Mcgoldricks best interests to stay and have a relatively injury free season with us. He will certainly get a lot of playing time this year with Sears on the wing, no Varney and Murphy very stop-start with injuries as he is getting older. I would imagine that if our team stays the same as now he will be automatically in our starting 11 every game.

We are also low on numbers so selling now makes little sense.

Could save us some money if works out . Don't think Pringle was our type of player as he could take free kicks, corners and score goals ! Not our type of midfielder at all .

Jas - Who are these 6 or 7 players that we are down?

IN - Webster
OUT - Pringle, AMN, Fraser, Foley.

That's 3 down.

GiveusaWave added 09:35 - Jul 5
I think Jas might mean fringe players:
Clarke, Tabb, Varney, Yorwerth, Piotr, Feeney, Toure etc

Guthrum added 10:03 - Jul 5
How much first team game-time did those fringe players have last season? Very little.

And, on the other side of the balance, you have the youth who are comeing through: Dozzell, Emmanuel, etc.

I saw a lot of the U21 and U18 side last year and most are not ready. Dozzell, Emmanuel and Kenlock all could play. Ford and Clarke could have played but we lost them to West Ham and Arsenal respectively. Benyu showed moments. U21 was hard watching last season.

Kenlock as well, So we're, what, four players down on last season - who got almost no match-time between them in the League, even in a season plagued by significant injuries.

You could also throw in to this debate the fact that Teddy B will be back as well.

Guentchev was right.Total of 11 players gone, not mentioned were Kyle Hammond, who has signed for Maldon and Jon Henley(Hemel Hempstead)

Wouldn't expect us to sell any regular first teamers unless a fee was involved;but their combined wages/salaries must come to a fair bit though.

Thought squad was a bit inflated last season;but one or two marquee signings wouldn't come amiss;although Micks remarks recently would seem that they will only be on loan.

Pity, suppose that the reduced season ticket money means that once again we wont have anything to excite us in the way of new signings;but havn't given up hope yet.

If the missing fans are to be enticed back, then it is only about a week, I believe, before the extended window for season ticket renewal closes at the discounted price, and nothing has happened so far to make my friends return.

Pleased for Cameron Stewart though.

Had forgotten about him til I saw his smiling face on picture of first days training.

Last season saw him playing in pre-season friendly with the youths, and naturally he didn't look a very happy bunny
