Fulham Linked With Move for Smith
Monday, 18th Jul 2016 09:34

Fulham are being linked with a move for Town centre-half Tommy Smith, while Blackburn and Reading are also said to be showing interest in the 26-year-old.

According to The Sun, the Cottagers are keen on Smith and are ready to pay £750,000 for the New Zealand international.

Smith has been with the Blues since joining the academy a decade ago and has been a regular for most of Mick McCarthy’s time in charge at Portman Road.

However, with Adam Webster having signed from Portsmouth earlier in the summer, competition for Town’s central defensive roles has increased, Christophe Berra having been preferred for Smith’s preferred left-sided position in the past.

Smith is contracted to the Blues until next summer, Town having exercised an option for a further year on the deal he signed in 2013 at the end of last season.

Berra is better at his best but I'd argue Smith is more consistant and would rather keep him. Think we all knew one defender was likely to go since Webster signed though.

This sadly (& finally) makes sense of the earlier arrival of Adam Webster.

Know Knot Tommy Smith, He can head the balls for Myles and Miles!!!!

Really hope he doesn't go anywhere, he's a defender that loves defending and brilliant at attacking the ball, I would also suggest the future captain of our club.

I wouldn't be adverse to this personally if Mick was given the money to reinvest, but I would want north of 7 figures when you consider the money teams are spending currently. Berra is a better defender IMO although Smith has age on his side. A partnership of Berra and Chambers (or perhaps Webster if he proves himself) feels more natural anyway in terms of left side / right side. And we would still have young Digby coming through. Smith has been good for us but he's prone to an error and his distribution is poor. He's exceptional in the air though.

If Mick isn't going to see any of that money then I would rather keep hold of him.

If we really must sell players (and there are others before Tommy I would let go first) can we at least ensure that we don't give them away for a pittance !!

No, please don't go, rather see Berra or chambers go if we're going to lose a defender. Smith and Webster could be the future for years to come with kenlock and Josh Emmanuel either side of them, they are all full potential.

Before the Smith haters start piping up, he was voted inside our top 3 performers last season. He is improving dramatically and in my opinion, it would be a big loss if we were to let him go.

Albeit, I can't see him moving on, as I would see him starting ahead of Berra, alongside Webster (if he lives up to his potential), but also, he loves the club.

Offer him a contract, asap!

Berra in his 30's Smith still only 26, and Town through and through, I would be gutted if we sold him for that sort of money, considering we are paying the same fee for a L2 player!!

Rather try and sell Berra for a bit of cash if possible, on account of his age. Smith shouldn't be letting two new youngsters, or even Chambers, dislodge him from his place.

Not at this price...no. I would not sell Smith since he has a lot more to give IMO. Would clear out either Chambers or Berra if we have to (why not Coke for £1 or other fringe players) and build on a younger team. Can see why Webster was purchased (and a good purchase this appears to be) but would have liked to keep Clarke too. Unless Smith wants to go, keep hold. If he wants to go then seek a much better price. Fans (me included) are cynical that any money will be reinvested.

To be honest with the number of players leaving is MM planning to be a player manager this season?

Being strong and good in the air doesn't make you a top CB. Sadly Tommy lacks any form of pace, ability on the ball and his positioning is poor. He seems a top bloke but at best he is an average football league CB. I personally wouldn't have valued him at £100,000 let alone £750,000!

For 750k i am not surprised. If we sell tommy smith for that money it will be the bigest load of madness since jordan rhodes.

No, we must not sell Tommy Smith, He is a consistent 7/10 player and given Berra was largely 5/10 last season and Chambers about a 2/10 we need to hang on to smith.

£750000 ha ha ha What a small fee !!!
This is a player with 8-10 years ahead of him and proven at this level.
Berra only has 2 - 3 years at best and did not play as well last year as previous years.

I don't think selling Smith is a bad move.Berra has more experience and is not caught out of position that much and if paired with Webster in defence it would balance things out.Dont get me wrong,Smith has been a very good servant but I cannot see a great deal of improvement in him and let's face it £750 K if correct is very good business. One thing is for sure,I would only sell him on the understanding that whatever fee we managed to acquire the money was put back into strengthening the squad.

Should be kept. Wonder if earlier rumour about Berra interesting Rangers is accurate? If so Tommy might find himself on his preferred side if he stays. Like idea of him and Webster together but do wonder why he hasn't signed new contract

Please don't say 750k for Tommy Smith to enable us to buy Elliott Bennett for 250k for the other 500k to vanish without a trace. I like Tommy Smith, yes he's dropped some clangers in his time but he has definitely improved overall. But what happens if the Pompey lad isn't quite ready to be thrown in the deep end? Then what? Put Chambers back to CB I guess but then what if somebody gets injured? We'll be scrambling around trying to get somebody on the cheap that isn't as good as Smith. And so the downward spiral continues.
The only positive thing that could come from this is if Mick could unearth a couple of gems with the money, if (and that's a big if) he's really allowed to reinvest it all. And 750k isn't a lot these days. I give Mick some stick but he certainly deserves some credit for boxing fairly clever in the transfer market, so maybe he might be able to sign one or two who can do a good job for town. But it's a big ask and one that might sting us on the ass if one our other centre backs gets injured. Perhaps Elliott Bennett might sign and do well for us, although I'm not convinced. There is just no way to tell who will and won't do well when you sign a new player. If EB wasn't an ex-Norwich player perhaps it would almost certainly be more palatable!
And finally, just when I was hoping to find a story that we might actually sign somebody, instead I wake to the news that we are more likely to sell a first team player before anybody else comes in! Not great news really is it!
If Mick has been given sell before you buy orders from ME then it shows his level of commitment. The guy is literally rolling in it, if he really cared deeply about the club he would back the manager. The evidence is there for all to see, he continues to ask the manager to try and work miracles with peanuts! If this continues sooner or later we will become badly unstuck! So sad as all any of us want (regardless of if we back Mick or not) is to see Town thrive and not dive!

Mr Evans: although your views will upset a few on here , sadly I think you have hit the nail on the head. Yes, TS "one of our own", but for all his courage , work rate, never say die attitude , he IS one dimensional ( HOOF) and very one footed. He does, as you say lack pace, but all credit to him for continuing to show his metal. Last season he stood out , but I would add Berra was definately not up to his usual standards.
Webster will be twioce trhe footballing dfender of our own Tommy ...but at least we have him in. I had heard last season that TS might well move on. In fairness to the lad , maybe this would be a good thing for him, and his career. Sometimes its just right to move on.

Good Luck Tommy if you decide to leave and Town decide to sell. But £750k ? "Yer avin a laugh ( based on the current market)

hadleighboyblue added 10:44 - Jul 18
Based on last seasons performances and their respective ages , Smith has more to offer in future than Berra .

£750k is not enough given today's inflated prices .

I suppose a lot depends on whether Tommy wants to go , but any cash raised has to be used to strengthen the team

As has been mentioned if Mick was given the money to spend on 2 young hungry forwards then so be it-----although my money was on Berra to be on his way.

Either way I think there is quite a bit more business to be done before kick off.

midastouch added 10:46 - Jul 18
On the flip side, if he goes for nothing in the summer, then do we take a punt and see if we can spend the money wisely and try and strengthen in other areas? But the big question remains, how much of the whopping 750k will Mick be granted to spend, 25%, 33%, 50%, 66%, 75% or 100% of it? Anything less than 100% will be a p*ss poor show!

Opinion appears to be divided on Smith. I like him for his effort and aerial ability but playing him on the right side of defence can never work.
It is not Smith's fault that he has to play on the right side so in that sense he has done well.
Sadly I don't think he has ever won McCarthy over which is why on at least a couple of occasions Smith was left out for a game.
Mc Carthy would never do that to Berra (unless injured) so I think Tommy's days with us are numbered now that we have bought Webster.

Am not surprised.

However, He's is surely worth a lot, lot more than the figure stated!

He i much better than Delaney and look where he is.

Would be gutted to see him go.

Regardless of sentiment, and in today's game where club loyalty is virtually dead through players and agents greed.
Smith doesn't appear to really improve his game
He has been caught out quite a few times by the opposition breaking quickly upfield
such as typical nifty forwards like Nugent etc.

Whose backpass was it against Barnet only the other day that gifted them a resulting winning penalty.
And he only contributed only 2 goals last season.
