McCarthy: Dozzell "Very Assured"
Friday, 22nd Jul 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy felt 17-year-old Andre Dozzell put in a “very assured” display during Wednesday’s 1-0 pre-season friendly victory at Colchester.

Dozzell, who also stood out during the earlier friendly at Barnet, broke into the first team at the end of last season, scoring on his debut at Sheffield Wednesday having come on as a sub and making his first senior start in the home game against Fulham.

“I thought Andre looked very assured, I thought he had a very good game,” McCarthy said after the match at the Weston Homes Community Stadium where he used Dozzell in the narrow right midfield role in which Teddy Bishop has also played during pre-season.

How many games does McCarthy, who says he’s close to knowing his starting XI for the season opener at home to Barnsley on August 6th, envisage the England U17 international playing during the campaign ahead?

“I have no idea about that,” he admitted. “That is the million dollar question. But he will play and contribute this year, as I hope will James Blanchfield.

“I like to have a really good core of players, I don’t want to say numbers, and then James, Dozzer, Adam McDonnell, Josh Emmanuel, Myles Kenlock, they are going to have to be the back-up.

“If I take someone else’s young lad [on loan] who is going to go into our team, that is different. If I take someone’s young lad to be our back-up, I would sooner use ours to be honest.”

McCarthy is continuing to look for reinforcements, primarily wide players, and is waiting for Premier League clubs to make their fringe players available for loan, which is likely to happen nearer to the start of the season.

“There are two or three we are trying to get in and two or three loans deals as well," he added. "But we will just keep waiting on that front.”

Would he be disappointed not to add to his squad before the Barnsley game? “I don’t think the players who are here will be disappointed as they will have a better chance of playing.

“Bish has been playing on the right and he is very capable of playing there. While we haven’t picked up any wingers and I am still looking, Bish has played there and Freddie has played on the left.

“I am a great believer in dealing with what you have got rather than bemoaning what you haven’t got because if you are that way, you are going to be more positive in the people playing for you.

“Whatever I have got when we play Barnsley, I will expect a good performance.”

Former loanee Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who was in the England U19s side which exited the European Championships after losing 2-1 to Italy at the semi-final stage in Germany yesterday, remains on McCarthy’s radar.

“I would take him back, I told him that at the end of last season and I told Arsenal that at the end of last season. It is no secret,” the Town boss continued.

“He will be a better player this year for his experience last year. If he would like to come back, I would have him back all day long.”

Meanwhile, Bromley have ended their interest in young defender Joe Robinson, who played a trial game for the Vanarama National League side at the weekend.

“Joe Robinson went to Bromley and had half a game, I think, and they are looking elsewhere. Joe is available to go out on loan,” McCarthy said.

Also back at Portman Road is keeper Michael Crowe after a two-week trial at Portsmouth, also with a view to a loan.

“Michael Crowe is slightly different. He went to Portsmouth with the view to being their first choice keeper — and if he had been that, I would have let him go, of course.

“If he plays one game and doesn’t play well, that’s different — as long as he had started.

“But I think Cooky [Pompey manager Paul Cook] can’t afford to take a lad without too much experience. Portsmouth are a big club with a big fanbase and I think that was too much of a risk for them.

“If he had gone, I would have had to have got another keeper in case we have any problems on the bench. Michael will stay and play U21s.”

The Town first team are next in action at Cambridge United on Saturday afternoon (KO 3pm) when McCarthy says the players who came on during the second half at Colchester - including new signing Adam Webster - will start and in most cases will be given around an hour.

A Town XI expected to include a number of fringe players will be in action away against a Coggeshall Town side featuring pop star Olly Murs this evening (KO 7pm), while an U18s team will travel to face Hadleigh United on Saturday (KO midday).

That was a surprising quote alright, suggesting that he expects to bring in at least 4 players & hopefully 6. I was much happier to read that than the bit about how Bishop & Sears can play (out of position) on the right wing.

Close to knowing his starting XI ... "Bish has played on the right Freddie has played on the left" ..... You useless idiot dinosaur. Yet more round pegs in square holes !!! We're screwed if he goes with Gerk the Berk in goal Chambers at RB Bish right wing Freddie left wing ...... So wish I had renewed ... NOT !!!!

Queue the minus marks, the "go support someone else" comments..... Bore off cos all of the above is CORRECT !!!

It does appear that he is putting his eggs all in one basket.
To wait until the season is to begin in the hope he will secure a few faces which premiership managers don't think are up to the task yet!

Yes it does appear that we can't sign players teams won't release yet. That those not good enough for the Prem yet might end up here. That we've got one of several youngsters now in contention - ergo "the cupboard is bare".

I wish Phil would move those straws into easier reach for you boys.

Positive news story leads to negative comments shock.

If something upset me so much I really wouldn't waste my time.

Really would love to see Emmanuel and Kenlock giving a real go this year if I am honest, along with Benyu. Might just be me, but Emmanuel is better than Chambo at right back, quicker, stronger and doesn't get caught out as often. Douglas is NO better than Benyu/Dozzell/Bishop but always gets ahead of them and I don't feel Knuden did enough last season to show he is a promotion challenger.

Give the young lads a chance and see what happens, is all I say!

I see we scored from a well executed long ball against Colchester. The hoofball brigade were silent about this. The guy should have played a short pass into midfield. He needs dropping.

I'd pick Dozzell ahead of AMN to play on the right "all day long"...

Trying to remain positive but the more MM talks the less convincing it seems........let's hope this does not become the dog ate my homework when the door closes. Use the youngsters more...we have talent coming through and do not stick with the same old solution. FFS do not drop our No 1 goalie for Gerken. Would like to see 2-3 younger players used in each match. Well this is my opinion good or bad. Will continue to live in hope though.

I would rather play our own youngsters than help develop loan players for the benefit of other clubs. If we can get someone exceptional like Ryan Fraser then ok because that really would help Ipswich in the short term, but our players must come first.....IF THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH

Sounds like Andre Dozzell is in that category (and the little I saw of him last season certainly backs that up), so I would rather play him than get AMN back. Same for the two young full backs who look decent to me

Let me just consult my Micktionary ......................

Oh I see.

This means 'I haven't got any money to sign anybody and there are no freebies in this area of the park, so I'll state the lad is looking more assured than he actually is to excite the fans and paper over the dismay at not signing anyone but suggesting that 'one of our own' is ready to go'.

Yeah, err bore off. Whatever that means.

Bishop and Dozzell out of position instead of AMN all day long

I know Freddie is a striker and if he was given a run of games up top he would be excellent but in my opinion last season he played better wide right than down the middle. Just because players come here with a position as their title doesn't mean they can't play other positions. And with mick saying we could have another 4-6 players coming in, we're in no place to judge the squad which as of this moment could play a very effective 433 with 3 strikers and beat Barnsley...

Also chambers was our highest scoring defender, had more assists than most midfielders and learnt how to do a step over last season, he can play right back very well and if he plays there this season I am happy with that!

What's wrong with, Bart, chambers, Webster, smith, knudsen, bish, skuse, dozzel, Murphy, mcgoldrick, sears as a starting 11 for the first game, with 4-6 more signings to come?!?!?!?!?

If we're trying to get 2/3 loans and 2/3 permanents in, how can Mick be close to knowing what his starting 11 will be?

If we have 4 or 5 of our own youngsters in the starting X1 v Barnsley i will be one of the first through the turnstiles.

Yes we all agree, investment, pleasure, style of play etc etc has been lacking. But to give up watching the team you supported from a very young age shows the love and commitment is not there.I understand that cost with running a home and family takes priority and fans do have to sacrifice,so when the team is not enjoyable to watch attendances will drop off.
I grew up watching Town in the glory years, bla bla bla,but also suffered the mid to late eighties poor offering.I was even in the papers and had police cordens in the cobbold stand as me and some mates had banners up suggesting to sack the board..Anyway the point is,to me Ipswich are everything, yes I put up with the rubbish because of my love for the town.Things aren't great at the mo but don't lose faith. If we get promoted we'll be in a relegation battle so more doom and gloomers will come out.Just remember the joy you all get out of footie, what else would you do on a Saturday and Tuesday. The 2/3 thousand that regularly follow us away, are never down beat if we lose.So come on Prebbs chin up ,enjoy the season, meet me for a beer pre match and I'll get some spirit into ya...
Who's coming to Cambridge tomorrow?

Exactly my point Bluejake !!

If he knows his starting XI he either has those deals lined up or far more likely is going with what he has in which case were in big trouble !!!

As for you JimmyJazz if you don't know what bore off means then I worry for you !!!

Coult1 welcome. The bad press the club has got is due to the investment, playing style, stubbornness, cost of tickets, entertainment and lack of ambition and rediculous sticking to FFP unlike almost every other club. It is also my beloved club and I want nothing but success for it but this owner MD and manager with this group of players I don't believe will bring that. I really hope I'm wrong !!!

What is wrong with people 😂😂 Bishop and Dozzel are two of the most exciting, creative, young players we've had in a very long time. He's talking about 5-6 young players, brought through the academy, who are capable of being this seasons back-up. He talks about SIX potential new signings. The last few articles have been about changing our style, our good young players, our best players being fit and also we have signed a couple of promising, young, ball playing, centre halves from lower leagues! Lots to be positive about if you ask me! Looking forward to the Barnsley game and glad I renewed!! Glad so many of the negative "supporters" haven't renewed tbh, might mean a better atmosphere at PR this season!!!

Ok coult1 just saw rest of your post

Brilliant post !!!! Really wish I could share your optimism. I have been watching town since 1976 but last year did me in I'm afraid

I will go to some games my son has kept his season ticket (which I of course will still be paying for) so I guess I am somewhat contradictory but the only way I can think of making my point to this non entity of an owner, this pointless MD Milne, this dinosaur of a manager, is to vote with my feet.

I hate myself for it and I'm sorry but we are dreadful from the top of the club to the bottom.

😢😢😢

And as to why McCarthy actually thinks he has something to offer mystifies me

He's NO More than another version of Jaime Peters
and where the heck did he vanish too once he got released.

Personally i'll be a lot happier and far more excited about seeing the likes of Dozzell,McDonnell,Blanchfield,Kenlock & Emanuel etc playing in our first team than the endless list of loanees that very rarely contribute anything (Fraser,Jonny Williams being rare exceptions).

Show more faith in OUR kids Mick - not somebody elses..we have enough experience in the squad,a sprinkling of our own youth will do the team and the fans a lot of good.
