McCarthy Fuming After Town Concede Late Equaliser
Saturday, 23rd Jul 2016 20:01

Town boss Mick McCarthy was fuming after his side conceded a late equaliser during their 1-1 pre-season draw against Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium.

Andre Dozzell put the Blues in front in the 83rd minute but U’s striker Joe Pigott netted with a minute of scheduled time remaining.

“Up until the last couple of minutes it was all right, but the last couple of minutes it was bullshit football that we’ve played and we’ve conceded a goal from it and I’m fuming,“ he seethed.

“Even if we didn’t score [the chances we’d had], we just slowed the game down, we weren’t playing forward.

“The lads who have gone on, I know it’s not easy going on for 25 minutes, but they put a lot on for 25 minutes as well. I’m not tolerating that, I’ve just told them that, that’s garbage that. To concede that goal is really piss poor.”

McCarthy was able to take some positives, including Dozzell’s well-taken goal and the form of some of the squad’s other younger players.

“He’s good, Andre. I thought James Blanchfield was good, Bish was good in the first half. I thought Tristan Nydam came on and did well, he’s just a kid, he’s great.

“There were some positives but I’m just fuming after that now. I don’t often lose the plot but I just have.

“And it’s a pre-season friendly. I say I’m not bothered about them, I don’t like them but I don’t like conceding goals at that time - Brentford away last year, Nottingham Forest away last year, Bolton last year. That’s bullshit, you don’t get anywhere if you do that. I’m not tolerating that.

“I’m not having it, it’s not good enough. It’s unforgivable for me. If he whacks one in from 30 yards, fine, but we had the ball and we gave it away. Not good enough.”

McCarthy was pleased to see David McGoldrick make his first appearance of pre-season after a hip flexor problem.

“It’s lovely to see him out there,” he added. “That’s his first 30 minutes in a long time, let’s hope we can keep him on the pitch.”

Dean Gerken and Adam McDonnell missed the game, while Luke Hyam came off with a knee injury.

“He’s just got a tight hamstring,” McCarthy said regarding Gerken. “Adam got kicked in a training session, he got raked down the back of his leg, he’s got scars down the back of his leg. He’s all right, it’s a kick but it’s a nasty one.”

“We all saw what Luke did. I don’t know what he’s done other than twisting his knee. We’ll have a look either tomorrow or Monday to find out.”

Regarding tabloid reports of interest in Tommy Smith and Daryl Murphy, he said: “Nobody’s made a phone call to me.”

The Town boss says there is no progress on incoming signings: “No, still working on it. Hopefully we’ll get something but at the moment nothing's happening.”

Well sort it out then, happens way too often. How many fans can say they feel confident when we're 1 goal up approaching the final minutes?

So you lost the plot Mick and were very annoyed and vented your frustrations! same as we who don't matter were venting their frustrations at your continued disjointed(back four) and playing for a point selections last season!!!! well big man suffer it like we have!

Finally mick has lost the plot just like the rest of us! I'd much rather read this than him saying we were fabulous in the last few minutes and unlucky. Times are a changing

WHY ??? Should be used to it by now dinosaur. We are !!!!

Live to say we are looking good and stronger as a unit than last season but that's not the case. We are miles away from a promotion challenging squad. So what do we do about it ? Invest no money. Rely on what we have. Hope we can good it and run around a lot. So so underwhelmed. Love to be surprised and see this group succeed but don't hold out much hope.

Were we playing Barcelona or Cambridge? Surely if it's the latter a last minute goal is irrelevant as a team looking to achieve promotion to the premier league should have been three or four in front? Good to see the youngsters do well, but if our strategy is to rely on just youth then we won't get top six. They aren't all ready to play 46 games and be consistent.

So far 14 of the championship sides have signed premiership players on either loans or full transfers yet we keep being told teams aren't doing business, Leeds a team who always seem to be breaking the fair play rules have signed a player for 3 million

I don't care if it's pre season or not, we shouldn't be drawing to teams like this simple as that!

Calm down Mick.
What you should do is once you get home
is to phone Marcus Evans and state you are resigning forthwith
and will be emptying your desk first thing on Monday

Oh and returning the keys to the clubs Company Fiat 500

Obviously ticked he was overlooked for the Sunderland job and the Hull job as well probably

Still good to see a few youngsters getting game time, lets hope Hyam is out for the season. Don't want him anywhere near the starting eleven

You're an absolute disgrace wishing any player out for the season.
You are not fit to wear the shirt.

I am sure all itfc supporters hope the injury to luke hyam is nothing serious and he is back in contention soon. Really sad that this site allows comments like the one above to see the light of day wheather they are personal oppinions or not

Quote McCarthy "I don't often lose the plot but I just have."
No McCarthy you lost the plot a couple of seasons ago and never looked like regaining it.

Err...Mick - how often in the last couple of seasons have we tried to slow down the game in the last few minutes & conceded?

It's a shame to think that this season will be interesting for all the wrong things, as if we are to make a bad start to the season I can only see things getting worse unless we make some real intent and bring in a couple of additions that will make us stronger. Agree with you Jas, regardless that it's pre season, 2 goals in 3 games with 1 win against Colchester, Barnet and Cambridge is very poor, all being league 2 teams. I just hope MM can see as much as us how badly we need strengthening or it could be another average season.

@floridaboy I have been working with Hyam doing some one to one personal training. We did some after his initial injury and, after another op was needed, over this close season. He reported to pre season the fitest of any town player. I'd love for you to to have seen first hand how gutted he was to have missed so much through injury, how determined he was to come back stronger. He has worked his absolute nuts off to get to where he is and is the most humble, decent bloke I know to kick a football about for a living. He's a local lad a pleasure to have at this club and your comment wishing him out for the season is an absolute and utter disgrace.

Just glad I did not renew my season ticket this year....... All I can see is the same as last year NO FOOTBALL BEING PLAYED MORE PAINT DRYING........ So many match's last season were so a wast of time......

Most town fans are brilliant. Anyone who follows us away knows how amazing our support us, singing and supporting for 90 mins even if 3-0 down. Other fans (a lot of which comment on here very often) are awful. Constantly moaning and slating management/players. Whilst I agree that our manager is often tactically niave and our owner doesn't put his hand in his pocket enough, just get behind your team! Today was a FRIENDLY and we played a lot of kids. Pre season games mean nothing, it's just about getting players match fit

agree 100% with tractorboyjim & others - Hyam is a honest pro with ITFC in his heart. I like the fact that people can have different opinions but wishing injuries on whole-hearted players like him is poor & disrespectful.

I like this site but not sure how anyone can call themselves a fan with that type of support..

It was a horrible performance, with Bru and Douglas absolutely shocking (even worse than I'd feared they could play). But, floridaboy, your comment about Hyam is a disgrace.
