McCarthy Admits Transfer Frustrations
Monday, 25th Jul 2016 06:00

Blues boss Mick McCarthy admits he’s frustrated not to have made further additions to his squad and says deals have broken down "for various reasons” this summer. McCarthy’s record Town signing Adam Webster, who joined from Portsmouth for £700,000 plus Matt Clarke, and former loanee Paul Digby, who was recruited on a free transfer from Barnsley, are the only signings so far this summer.

“Still working on it, hopefully we’ll get something but at the moment there’s nothing happening,” he said after Saturday’s 1-1 friendly draw at Cambridge United.

“We’ve tried and can’t do it at the moment, so we’ll just keep trying. There’s a bit of frustration but that’s not through lack of trying. [Deals haven’t come off] for various reasons.”

He added: “It’s not through want of trying, far from it, that’s the frustration, not with anybody else, not with the club, not with [owner] Marcus [Evans], just the fact that we can’t get anything done.

“And a lot of it stems from a lot of players being away on pre-season and we’ll just have to wait.”

He admits he would have liked more signings in by this point but says it’s not a huge concern that new players will now come in with the season about to start or already under way.

“Yes I would, but I take the view that they’re all doing pre-season elsewhere. So if we get one in the week leading up to the start of the season, or even the week after, they’ve all done their pre-season, they’ll all be fit, they’ll all be ready to go.”

Lack of signings wasn’t the only reason McCarthy was frustrated at Cambridge on Saturday, the Blues boss having been angry that his team was unable to hold on to their lead, Joe Pigott netting an equaliser a minute from the end after Andre Dozzell had put the Blues in front on 83.

“The game is coming to an end and we’re keeping the ball but we’re not going anywhere with it,” he said.

“And we kept it and kept it and passed it and it gradually slowed down to where we gave the ball away here and it ended up in our net. It’s just unacceptable.

“It was collective responsibility for slowing it down so much and not passing like we’ve tried to do. One stray pass and they break up the field and it ends up in our net. Not good enough.

“I’m not going to start accepting that, we had too many goals against us late in games last year for whatever reason, whether it was a freekick or a corner, I’m not bothered, we can’t afford to do that. So I might as well start snarling about it now. I don’t want to see that again.

“I think they were trying to be sensible in keeping the ball but it wasn’t going anywhere, it was just nothing and we probably got our just desserts.”

He added: “It’s important for our fans [to win]. This could have been a cup game on a Tuesday night, we could have come away, we don’t want a replay and we end up with a poxy replay and then we’ve got another game and then we’re playing on the Saturday.

“We’ve got to win that game. What was it 88 minutes or 89 minutes? You’ve got to win the game. That’s unacceptable.

“I had a few words with one or two of them. I’ll be all right on Monday when I see them, I’ll be back at it, but as a collective thing, as a team, we can’t do that. You’ve just got to manage the game.

“Even if it’s somebody on the pitch who says, hold on a minute, come on, do it properly. And we didn’t.

“I’ve just said to them, we’ve got Barnsley at home on the opening day who’ll be breathing fire and brimstone. They’ve just got promoted, they got promoted well and finished the season brilliantly, so they’ve got momentum.

“That’s our home game and then we go to Brentford, who are spending money. Wolves have just been taken over and are spending, then Norwich at home. That’s a helluva start for us, so we need to be right at it from the very start.”

Town have two friendlies remaining, at Charlton on Tuesday and at home to Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise next Saturday.

The Blues boss says he'll give players full games in those matches: “They’ll be getting 90 minutes, hopefully. Whether that’s the team that plays [against Barnsley] is another matter.”

In other words, Evans is doing the usual. Leading the fans on, getting peoples hopes up, then turning round and offering peanuts in terms of transfer fees and wages. If you want decent players to come, then at least offer them competitive wages for goodness sake.

In order to get out of this division, you have to spend a bit of money to add that bit of quality. Your not going up with has beens and kids

"Its important for our fans (to win) this could of been a cup game" Since when did you start caring about cup games and winning them for the fans?

The negative boring football is my biggest gripe towards MM, but his attitude towards the cups and us fans is up there too!

So McCarthy admits it's not due to Evans and funding so who do we blame? Scouting? Unrealistic targets not wanting to drop to the Championship?

"...and says deals have broken down "for various reasons”

What, like clubs not accepting £32.57 and a jumbo pack of Werthers Originals for any of their players?

Same old same old has been the way for the last 5 or 6 Windows. We can't / won't attract players because of money, style, manager, ambition, or whatever. This horse sh1t about premier league teams on pre season tours doesn't seem to have stopped almost every other team in the division bringing in multiple players from all avenues. Something MUST be wrong with who we are or what we're doing or offering !!!!

Underwhelmed, bereft of hope and chambers bull about last season and top 6 aim this is ambitious at best and dillusional if realism takes over.

We can't compete with other Championship clubs for transfers. Mick is doing his best but we have lost out to Feeney and it looks like all these transfer targets are not interested. Personally, we need at least one winger before Barnsley H. I would happily take back Maitland-Niles if that is the case.

We've continually been told that if the right player is available for the right price we will go for it. This begs the questions are we making unrealistic offers and who are the targets?

'It's preseason' isn't really a good enough reason to be struggling to recruit players. I don't want players crowbarred into unnatural positions all season.

I'm sorry to say that the club I have supported through thick and thin since 1958 now appears to be one that quality players do not want to join and we are reduced to borrowing and scraping the barrel very very sad!!

Quote MM end of season " we haven't been good enough"..

Surely the coming season the standard will be higher; Newcastle, Villa huge clubs with big budgets, The Budgies will be top 6 minimum unfortunately,Derby & Brighton plus even Leeds spending money & Wolves new owners..

I am not a MM hater like some but aiming for top 6 with what we currently have is like me aiming to pull a supermodel - unrealistic & laughable..

Here's the idea for many of you constantly moaning. Let's go silly, spend money we don't have, go bust then have no club to support.
Despite what most think, in terms of attendances, resources, finance with parachute payments etc. We are lower mid table club. We forget we are heavily in debt already (albeit to the owner). In relation to this we have for the last 3 seasons been competitive in and around the play offs yet this still isn't good enough. Sadly is not being unambitious but realistic.

Obvious this was going to happen as soon as we lost out on Feeney a very average player to a very average club Blackburn who blew us out the water on deal. ME Policies coming home to roost now and with loads of other clubs being prepared to invest and big money everywhere in football I'm afraid it's going to be a tough season. Mid table mediocrely here we come!

A ball hasn't been kicked and the word delusional is having a good run out.
Why don't people realise however much people don't agree our future and in some respects the fans relationship with ME was Squandered by messers Keane and Jewell if every supporter was to ask themselves the question I've got a business the ceo and manager kept knocking on the door and asking for millions in purchase price plus add ons and there was no improvement in the business you would soon put a stop to it and pursue a different business plan.
The new business plan has shown an improvement and only cost 8million a year for 3 years instead of the 100 million plus of the Rk Pj years I know what plan you would all choose if it was Your money being squandered.

So what would our fans want? be held to ransom by bang average players like Feeney? Pay way over the odds for sh1te like in the Keane/Jewell days?

I bet these same 'fans' would be the same fans would if we did the things I mentioned by slating Mick and ME for doing these deals!

I think serious questions have to be asked of both Mick and Evans, because certainly thus far this has been the worst transfer window of the lot. Yes, we signed Webster for 700k and Clarke going the opposite way, but if that was our whole budget smashed on 1 player, in an area we are well stocked, that is crazy. With no emergency loan window now as a safety net, or a facility used by us, because we didn't do our business properly we have to bring in players during the window. I wonder if Evans and Mick ever sit down and review the policy when a window closes. This is ground hog day once again

Sure we want to aim for the top six, Premiership and all that razzamatazz, but do you know what I'd be happy just watching some decent football at Portman Road instead of the very poor stuff that's been on offer for several seasons now. How many games can we say were entertaining at Home last year?
And MM can you please put the players in their best positions. Doing one for the Team is becoming irritating. What next....Bart playing centre-forward so that he can give Gerks a game?

Essex 57 ... Did Jewell not bring in more money on transfers under his time in charge ? Perhaps players don't want to play in our system style of play , it can't all be about money because now players and agents will be knowing we are getting desperate as the season is fast approaching . MM has run out of contacts , old players ,ideas and by the look of it backing by his chairman

"So McCarthy admits it's not due to Evans and funding so who do we blame?"

Well McCarthy's not going to bad mouth Evans is he or he is out of a job! Nobody else seems to be having these problems getting deals done so its presumably down to what we are offering in terms of fees/wages.

Personally I blame Evans fair and square. Once his initial plan, to buy the debt at a fraction of its face value, throw a few million in the pot to get an early promotion and then pay himself back the full value of the debt, blew up in his face there hasn't been a coherent policy since!
