McCarthy to Give Players 90 Minutes at Charlton
Tuesday, 26th Jul 2016 15:56

Town travel to Charlton this evening for their penultimate pre-season friendly (KO 7.45pm).

Speaking after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Cambridge, manager Mick McCarthy said he plans to give many of his players 90 minutes this evening, having fielded a different side in each half of the games against Shelbourne and Barnet and after giving his players 60 minutes in either the Colchester or Cambridge matches.

“They’ll be getting 90 minutes, hopefully,” said McCarthy, who is taking a 24-man squad to take on the Addicks, who were relegated to League One last season.

“Whether that’s the team that plays [against Barnsley on the opening day] is another matter.”

He added: “I know the ones who are the gilt-edged ones I can hang my hat on and then there are others who are coming through, some kids who have done well, some who are probably developing.”

Despite having been unhappy that Town conceded a late equaliser at Cambridge, McCarthy is positive about the way pre-season has gone overall.

“They’re all fit, we’ve got no major injuries and we’ve got Didz [David McGoldrick] back, which is great.”

McGoldrick, who suffered a hip flexor injury early in pre-season, may be given his first friendly start this evening having come on for the last half hour at the Abbey Stadium, although the 28-year-old is unlikely to be amongst those playing the full game.

Summer signing Adam Webster will also continue his comeback from the ankle injury he suffered with Portsmouth at the end of last season. McCarthy has said the 21-year-old is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season.

Dean Gerken (hamstring) and Adam McDonnell (kick to the leg in training) again miss out, as they did at Cambridge, McCarthy having said their injuries aren’t too significant.

Giles Coke is yet to feature in pre-season having undergone knee surgery at the end of last term.

Tickets for tonight's match at The Valley, where the Blues have won their last four Championship games, are available on the turnstiles with adults seats costing £10.

Town complete their pre-season programme on Saturday when they face Belgian second division side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise at Portman Road.

Probable squad: Bialkowski, Crowe, Chambers, Emmanuel, Knudsen, Kenlock, Webster, Berra, T Smith, Digby, Malarczyk, Skuse, Douglas, Hyam, Bishop, Blanchfield, Dozzell, Bru, Stewart, Murphy, Sears, Pitman, McGoldrick, McLoughlin.

Surely go 433 if we have no wingers
skuse,
bishop and dozzell,
mcgoldrick, Murphy, sears

Won't even comment on defence but Emmanuel and not chambers but like that's going to happen, captain and favourite is not going to be dropped

It's time we started banging some goals in, as our pre-season total of four is worrying when our opponents were Shelbourne, Barnet, Colchester and Cambridge! It's our penultimate friendly, but the squad feels far from ready to complete at the top end of the Championship. We're 64/1 on Betfair!

"I know the gilt edged ones i can hang my hat on"
roughly translates to "The crap players i continually pick because they are good lads"

Our pre season against much lower sides has shown us unable to create and take chances. Basically it was the same last season from Jan until the end of the season. So what have we learned about strengthening , adding players that can be augmented prior to the season starting , to get used to their team mates etc. NOTHING.

90 minutes?

But our defense usually goes to sleep after 80.

(Sorry, cheap shot)

Oh blinking flip after reading that v Barnsley it looks like Gerks(because he will fit by then) in goal a disjointed back four Skuse and Douglas in a night mare pairing to try and get us a point against a talked up world beating side(usual mick speak a few posts ago) God almighty same old drivel and crap I'm losng the will to live and more importantly the will to spend anymore hard earned on this crap.

@TheBeat I generally luv your freelance translator skills! :-) .... Although i have to stress I find 1 exception, namely "crap", as this particular "translation" is both guilty of going way overboard and being unfair in both it's generalization or really any individualization (except Coke-Head perhaps? :-) Nahhh! Besides he can hardly be described as a regular).
So may I humbly suggest you substitute it with either: A) "mediocre" B) "skill-limited" C) "one-dimensional" or D) "Hoof Susceptible"??? lol

Aye we all know The Dinosaur just adores his favorites, especially the "grinding" types, and although Mick has positively started to AT LEAST think, say & imply things he have not earlier done or subscribed to under his tenure here ..... he will in all likelihood continue/revert to this "favorization fetish" of his when the regular season gets underway.
Which imho makes this seemingly SOLE 750,000 investment .... in a defender! (a 2 division one at that) ..... that much more strange! Strange considering we DESPERATELY need wingers and creativity which preferably includes some pin-point passers (I believe I read somewhere we were dead last in passing percentage and completion last season in the Championship) and at best even someone with the skills & potential to be an true assists-aficionado, something which we have also lacked for a while.
But back to Mr. Webster -- and I really hope I'm wrong -- I can't help but having this nagging fear he could easily become just another "Elliott Hewitt" baring prolonged injuries to Mick's favorite backline. Remember Mr. Hewitt anyone??? :-) The much hyped and even PL sought-after (Arsenal, Eveton and Chelsea. See this old article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2052605/Arsenal-join-Chelsea-E ) former Macclesfield defender. Some will claim he didn't seem to have what it takes for this level (or higher) after all .... mayhaps .... but on other hand he really never gotta a fair chance or a fair run here imo, especially to develop and adjust himself to this much higher and tougher Championship level of football, on a remotely consistent basis! .... and thus nowadays Mr. Elliott is back in division 2 wearing merely a Notts County shirt!
