McCarthy: Fees a "Possibility"
Friday, 29th Jul 2016 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says Town paying fees is a “possibility” as he looks to add to his squad ahead of the start of the season.

The Blues’ only additions so far this summer are central defender Adam Webster, who joined from Portsmouth for £700,000 plus Matt Clarke, and fellow centre-half Paul Digby, who signed on a permanent basis from Town’s opening day opponents Barnsley following his loan at the end of 2015/16.

“We’re still trying, hopefully I’m going to get them in before the season starts,” McCarthy said.

Asked whether there is money available for fees or if all deals will be free transfers or loans, he added: “That’s another possibility, if it’s the right players, the right deal.”

Looking back at the weeks since the players returned from their summer break at the end of June, McCarthy says he’s pleased to have virtually a fully fit squad, a couple of minor niggles aside.

“I tell you every pre-season, it’s about getting everybody through and fit, and we’ve just about done that,” he said.

“We’ve got Pits that’s got a sore toe, Luke Hyam’s got a sore knee, other than that we’re all right.

“Bish has got through it and Murph and Didz, so we’re getting to August 6th, hopefully, with a fully fit squad.

“I think our games have been decent. I watched Wimbledon against Palace last night and I thought that had a really slow tempo to it.

“And I think we’ve played some decent stuff. I thought against Charlton the other night we played well but we just couldn’t score. Brett hit the cross-bar twice, Chambo had two chances so we’ve changed his contact lenses since then.

“I thought we played well, I was pleased with that performance and Bart never really had anything to do.”

He says Town didn’t create as many opportunities in all their friendlies: “We haven’t created that many chances, although I thought we did against Charlton.

“It’s up to us to create them, perhaps we didn’t have Murph in the team a couple of times or we didn’t put enough crosses in.

“At Barnet we lost to a penalty and that was a bit of a nothing game. We were just getting there.

“Cambridge, I thought we had enough chances to win that and gave away a really bad goal at the end, which infuriated me as anybody who saw me afterwards would have known.

“And I thought at Charlton we played well and created chances, we just didn’t score them.”

With everybody fit and raring to go,and with the possibility of a few additions it's beginning to look good.I must confess I was a bit apprehensive last month but now I'm changing my mind.Lets get behind the Blues and hope that we have a good season, and with an injury free team we can well challenge for a top six spot.

We heard this last pre season and in January. I find it remarkable, whatever the excuses, that we have signed just one new player and the season starts next week. We desperately need major improvements to the midfield.

Dunno what we'll pick up on the budget we clearly have.
I just hope the signings start earlier rather then later.

Diego Poyet would be a good addition from West Ham. Just been left out of this seasons squad list.

I hope he knows the season starts in a week!
A right back and a striker who can score 15/20+ a season are, in my opinion, the most essential. I don't believe an attacking midfield is a must, with Bishop, Dozzell and even Didzy being able to occupy that position. Maybe an extra winger, dependent on Lamah too.

After we sign a couple of players, I'll feel much more relaxed than I do right now.

We desperately lack creativity, especially on the wings. If we can get just two very good signings then our whole squad would look much better, at the minute it looks very bare to me.

Yawn! a week before the start of the season and we're still hearing this...

To be fair, it must be difficult. Just looking at the comments already on here, someone wants a right back, another wants a midfielder, maybe a winger. I am sure we all want Bishop and Dozell in the team, so not much room for attacking midfielders. Are we really going to buy another defender for right back? Goals are needed, finding the solution to our misfiring strikers is going to be key.

For me the rbiggest thing we are missing is a dominating hard defensive central midfielder that wins balls , protects the back four that has been shipping a lot of goals over the last season and a half and lets the creative players play and not have the fear of getting caught out of position or losing the ball so much . Bishop , Dozzell and Dids are more than enough creativity centrally .
When has Skuse ever dominated a game or put in a game turning big tackle ? He drifts along doing simple sideways passes but does not offer enough protection hence we have to play another defensive midfielder alongside him in Hyam or Douglas .
We need a Barton , Derry , Johnson character more than anything in this squad

Surco, Busquets is the only player in the world really, that shows how to be a defensive midfielder, but we've got Douglas, so just as good! ;-)

I do not know why we should be talking about other teams activities, BUT I see Sheffield Wed. have just signed another two Players ???? may be we are envious may be not, we will just wait and see.

We should have a solid start to the season. Everybody knows everyone else, there are no apparent personality issues or new players coming in to unsettle the side, no divas, no dead wood.I think that it was injury to our creative players that cost us last season - and now they're back.
AS FOR MANAGEMENT I want effort across the season in both cups and the league. EVERY game counts Mr Mc Carthy as you know - including friendlies, and I want you to shake senior players out of their comforrt zones by playing our strongest side every game AND using our young talent. Old enough to wear the shirt, old enough to play.

Skuse doesn't need to put a crunching tackle in because he reads the game do well! I'm sure 90% of teams in this league would love to have him in their team, such an underrated player. Completely agree with other posts though we need a right back a winger (or 2) and another striker then things would start to look considerably better.

Let's be honest, the priority has to winger. We don't have any wingers, literally zero so as much as we'd like improvement at right back or other area, a few wingers must be brought in asap.

Surco. I'd have thought Hyam was that uncompromising defensive midfielder you speak of?

hadleighboyblue added 09:49 - Jul 29
Why leave it till a week before the season starts to get people in ?

Wingers and a goalscorer have to be the priority - considering the standard of opposition pre season , the lack of goals needs sorting

debate out on Hyam . Our midfield was absent too often last season, giving our defence grief.. and few notable embarrassing defeats followed.. In need of stronger midfield and right back for sure... Will it happen?? dunno

Surco72 added 10:12 - Jul 29
Think he could be Arnie M but lacks the passing ability afterwards and the positional sense , a mix between him and Skuse would do the job , maybe why MM plays both ?

Skuse underrated he rarely breaks up the opposition play , creates nothing and has scored 1 goal in 3 years at the club

Just listening to sky sports news and apparently the enemy have made a £10m + bid for fulhams McCormick but even funnier is that they just said we have also made an enquiry! I nearly spat my tea out.

Why am I not surprised that we're going into the new season (once again) still with a centre back playing at right back?!
