Newcastle Eyeing McGoldrick
Friday, 5th Aug 2016 06:00

TWTD understands that Newcastle United are among the clubs keen on Blues striker David McGoldrick. As previously reported, Sheffield Wednesday are also one of a number of Championship sides keeping tabs on the 28-year-old, who is also interesting clubs abroad including FC Twente.

Like the Owls, the Magpies are set to monitor the Republic of Ireland international’s progress in the opening weeks of the season ahead of the transfer window’s closure at the end of the month.

Town are keen to keep hold of McGoldrick and are unlikely to be tempted by anything other than a very significant sum for the ex-Nottingham Forest man, having turned down a £7 million offer from Leicester in the summer of 2014.

Given McGoldrick’s fitness problems in the seasons since the Foxes’ bid, it’s understood that some interested clubs, including Newcastle, would prefer to pay a smaller initial loan fee - probably around the £1 million mark - with a view to handing over a larger figure if the move is a success and turned into a permanent switch.

Speaking last week, manager Mick McCarthy said that although he wasn’t aware of any specific interested parties, it would be no surprise to him if clubs were targeting McGoldrick, who is contracted to Town until the summer of 2018.

“Probably, I haven’t heard anything. If there isn’t any interest I’d be surprised, he’s a good player,” he said.

“To be fair to us, we’ve not seen the best of him over the last couple of seasons because of injury. So I’d like to see that this year with us. I don’t want to see him going anywhere else.

“But I’m damned sure there’s somebody interested in him, I don’t know who they are if that’s the case.”

At yesterday’s press conference, McCarthy said McGoldrick has been doing everything he can to catch his eye.

“If you’d have seen him training yesterday, I think he was trying to tell me something,” he said.

Having missed out on a place in the Irish Euro 2016 squad at the last, the chance to be involved in World Cup qualifiers and then perhaps the finals in two years’ time is a further incentive for McGoldrick during the new season.

“For sure," McCarthy continued. "Has Robbie Keane announced his retirement? I don’t know if he has! If he has, he’s been brilliant, if he hasn’t I’m sure he will at some stage.

“Didzy was close to going [to the Euros] anyway and there are going to be positions. We all know the squad will change. Somebody will get injured, Ireland will have different players because of circumstances, it’ll happen.

“So he wants to get in the team. He was desperate to go to the European Championships and if he can think he can get to the World Cup, that would be great for him.”

Good!

Newcastle are probably the only club who'd pay the sort of money that would make it worth selling him given his injury record. It would be substantial.

We could do wonders IF we were allowed to reinvest it.

I love Didz. Class player. But you can never rely on getting more than 25 games a season from him and a lot of those are when he's not fully fit and returning from injury.

If they offered £5m or above I'd bite their hands off. Seeing what they've offered for Knockaert makes me think they'd offer at least that.

YES!!! sell sell sell, he has not had a full season in years and we could make some good money on him.

£5m and sell. If we all want Town to play with wingers and Sears is a definite starter will he be a regular.

More importantly can he stay injury free. Doubtful given his problems over the past couple of seasons.

If they come calling sell!!

5m is nowhere near enough for a championship striker. Anyone who is saying 5m is living in the past.

Good player, but due to injury history, I'd let him go, if we can get around £3.5m, I'd be happy, we can't keep carrying him. Start Sears up front with Murphy or Pitman

Our best player by a country mile - far better than both Murphy and Sears.

If we do sell then we need a player of similar style - highly technical and intelligent. The only snag being is that these players are not common especially in the English leagues.

The only good thing with these story is that if true at least more than one club is interested which will push the asking price up.

Lazy disinterested and injury prone Sell him even if only to free up his wages

But loaning him out? No!!! To a rival? Maybe Newcastle aren't our rivals though? If you want him, then buy him or go up the road and strip some more of their assets from them - preferably right at the end of the window

Newcastle are crazy if we would loan him for £1m! What would we replace him with, when a L2 striker costs £3m?
Best player by a mile when fit and irreplaceable for the money being discussed here

It'd be a tough decision because he would probably want to go too.

I know he has an long record of injuries BUT just imagine if he stature fully fit this season? 46 games of McGoldrick! He is without doubt our classiest player for decades! Very Macrus Stewart like. When fit and you know DM is playing it'll force atleast an extra 600/700 supporters to part with their cash and attend home games.

sell him.

I personally don't want him to go and I will be surprised if anyone would pay much for him given his injury record.

I guess anybody will wait for a few weeks to see how he plays and make a bid before the end of the window.

As someone else has said, with 2 wingers now and Sears being able to play in his proper position it limits the chances of the 4 strikers although Murph won't be able to play 46 games at his age.

Different players but I would take Didz over Murphy all day. Our best player by a mile and has more ability in his little toe than Murphy has in his whole body. If we really have ambition we have to keep him even if he only plays half the season Murphy is older and more injury prone now and won't play 46 games himself.

I can't for the life of me understand you lot.
You all beg for players of class to join Ipswich, we have one in McGoldrick. Yet, you all want to sell?!
Fair enough he is injury prone but on his day he is a joy to watch and stands out a Suffolk country mile more than anyone else.

On his day he is one of our best players DON'T SELL

Pick him or lose him Mick. He's probably the best no.10 in the league and spends too much time on our bench. I like Freddie as much as everyone else but the team needs Mcg if we want to keep the ball better and go up a level.

essextractorboy93 added 09:27 - Aug 5
I wouldn't listen to any offers to anything less than 5 or 6 million. I know Newcastle are a big club but he'd just be warming the bench there, he'll have more first team chances here although we do have 4 strikers of similar ability

Whilst everyone loves Mc i for one have never been a fan, yes on his day he has some gifted touches, but he always appears disinterested to me, unless the ball magically falls at his feet he rarely actually chases after it, i am probably as wrong as wrong can be, but i would love it if actually looked like he had an interest in the game, and put some efort in! if a big offer came in i would snatch it with both hands, he,s fragile, always on the injury list, get some dosh and find some hungry fit young stars in the making, ok everyone minus me mow!

Steve_ITFC_Sweden added 09:41 - Aug 5
Of course, like MIck, I would love to see the best of McG for a season, but to be honest, I don't think that's going to happen. I would say "thanks McG" and then sell and open up a space for one of the promising youngsters we seem to have got on our books all of a sudden - or alternatively use some of the money to get a young striker. Why not one from abroad?

OwainG1992 added 09:57 - Aug 5
I don't want him to go. If there was one team in this division who want one of our players I'd hope it not he Newcastle as if they want someone they'll probably get them. If he went for say 5/6 mill would we reinvest it?

It was commendable to turn down such a big bid from Leicester back in the day. It showed great commitment from ME.
However accepting a bid now based on fitness would be crazy.
Any sort of decent bid with money up front would tempt me. Then look at one of the youngsters at Man utd like Keane or Wilson. Any remaining on a right back.

Sell him AND sell Murphy. Their goal potential is now over. We need new, hungry strikers.

Let him go. Think he will always be producing sick notes for Town

From what I've seen, Didz has been looking fit in pre season. Didz on his top form is worth more than 5 mil.

Keep him, as if we get rid of him, who are we going to get. Transfer season ends this month, we should now be looking to get the team together, not buying any more, apart from the odd loan.

Keep him, get us up.
