Varney Rejoins Town
Friday, 12th Aug 2016 11:07

Town have announced that striker Luke Varney has re-signed on a short-term contract until January.

Varney, 33, was released by the Blues at the end of last season, having signed a previous short-term deal after recovering from the achilles injury he suffered in the play-off semi-final against Norwich City at the end of 2014/15 when on loan from Blackburn.

The Leicester-born frontman, who has been given the number 12 shirt, will go straight into the squad for Saturday's game at Brentford.

The Blues are currently short of striker cover with Brett Pitman sidelined with a thigh injury.

In his previous two spells at Portman Road Varney has made 11 starts and 21 sub appearances, scoring two goals, the most recent in the 3-2 victory over the MK Dons in the final home game of last season in April.

Boss Mick McCarthy is continuing to look for additions with Premier League loan players remaining on his radar as well as permanent signings.

Ffs another one of Mick's favourites. Nice guy but not even good enough for League 1, who's next? Stephen Hunt? Zzzzz

No ambition. Why do you think so many teams have been queuing up for his signature? Because he isn't good enough !

28 games 2 goals, clinical. How is this a good signing in any way?

Good news especially with Pitman injured and Sears not scoring. Not a starter but offers a lot coming off the bench.

Not knocking Sears because I know he does a lot more on the pitch but Varney adds something else especially with a lot of games coming up.

Hopefully Sears and Varney will score tomorrow!

Can't believe it! He's been on beach for last few months while his agent has been knocking on Div 2 doors. Just don't get it, MM has lost it big time.

Great bloke, he sat on our table at the end of season players awards.

He isn't going to be anywhere near "Match fit"
you only have to just use McGoldrick as an example! (Fish out of water)

Therefore he can only be used for the last 10-15 minutes at best.
Yet another McCarthy masterstroke

Probably always on the cards depending on the club's transfer activity. Saved paying his wages over the summer. With our small squad depth a short-term deal makes sense.

I'm sure Luke is a decent guy & is nice to small animals , but 2 goals in his last 51 games makes Dozy Altidore look prolific. Delighted Mick's promised new signing has arrived.

Oh dear. He may be a wonderful chap who everybody loves, but on footballing ability a truly backwards step in my opinion. Bag a hat trick tomorrow reg and make me eat my words.

Is this some sort of sick joke? Get the banner out this proves it was right there simply is no ambition at the club whatsoever.
Hes not good enough. Thats a fact not opinion.

I don't understand this.

He's not a goal scorer and masks this with a lot of huff and puff.

Can we not attract anyone better?

He might be a great bloke and gives 100% but I'd rather give our youngsters a run out, our club never ceases to amaze me nowadays.....usually for the wrong reasons and this is one of them!
