Seven Arrests at Derby
Sunday, 21st Aug 2016 19:58

Seven arrests were made at today’s East Anglian derby against Norwich City, Suffolk Constabulary has announced, including two relating to the flares which were lit during the first half of the game, which ended 1-1.

A 34-year-old man from Ipswich was arrested for discharging a flare in the stands, while a 45-year-old man from Norwich was arrested for possession of a lit flare.

Police say several people required treatment by medics for the effects of the flares, but all are understood to be OK.

A Town spokesman said in a statement: "We obviously condemn the idiotic behaviour of those who set off flares inside the stadium and are working closely with the police to identify the culprits.

"We understand two arrests have already been made over the matter."

Meanwhile, a man from Norwich, 23, was arrested on suspicion of possession of class A drugs, while a 23-year-old man from Colchester and a 57-year-old man from Witham were arrested for breaching a section 35 dispersal notice to leave a designated area following anti-social behaviour.

A 29-year-old man from Felixstowe was arrested on suspicion of affray and a 23-year-old man from Norwich on suspicion of assault. All those arrested were taken into custody at Martlesham Police Investigation Centre.

Chief Superintendent Louisa Pepper said: "A very small minority appeared to be set on causing trouble and officers made several arrests during the course of the policing operation today.

“We said before the game that we would not tolerate anti-social behaviour, violence, racial chanting, mindless vandalism or any alcohol-fuelled disorder and the vast majority of the 25,000 who attended were responsible and respectful.”

Certain people just go for the trouble and to bait others, they are not mostly even watching the football.

Well said MickMillsTash.
Really can't see the point in bringing a flare. Achieves nothing other than a ban. But seriously 34 and 45!! The twenty somethings are bad enough. What a pair of saddos.

How were they allowed to gain entry ,a flare is not something you can hide in your shoe, they had them last time yet failed to improve the search process, not that i would like to frisk them ,not sure what you might find.

Apparently they just walked in holding them!!!!
When questioned they explained "it isn't a flare it's my sixth finger"

They didn't search any bags or anything on the way in - I went in with a rucksack and wasn't asked at any point what was inside - so that's how the flares got in.

Never ceases to amaze me how people can get this sort of stuff into the ground but just try and get a bottle of water in with a top on it!!!

It's not difficult to get flares into the ground if someone is determined enough. Quite a big problem in Sweden, even if they frisk search everyone going into the stadium. On another note, didn't the Budgies fill their ticket allocation? It looked pretty empty on tv down near the Sir Alf.

One of my friends was stopped taking in a hot dog she was eating at the Stevenage game but they don't check for flares (and presumably any other offensive weapons).
I would suggest they have got their priorities badly wrong!!

to be fair, a hot dog could do a lot of damage in the wrong hands!! ;)

Accurate figures quoted by the police. I swear the attendance was nearer 23,000. Only 1,500 out? Wondered if that kind of accuracy with figures is the normal?

Hooligans have always come from all age groups and all income groups. I remember getting an apology from a "supporter" of a London club for the behaviour of a supporter of theirs who was easily in his fifties. "Sorry" said the fan " He just can't let the eighties go....."
Thinking back, football in the 70's and 80's was often a pretty intimidating experience and occasionally downright dangerous. As an old school supporter who was at the Millwall quarter final in 78, I've pretty much seen it all. I've been hit, spat on, twice had a knife pulled on me - once in Churchmans - been in crowds where coins and darts were flying around and who's heard vile chants directed at players because of the colour of their skin or alleged sexual orientation I'm glad that the violent and abusive people that in the old days used the game as a pretext for gratuitous and organised violence, racism and homophobia are more than ever in the minority. Bring on the day when they're gone for good.

Old Clacton Blue, they have signs up saying that food consumed on the premises must be purchased inside the ground;but don't know how that would work out if somebody bought a hot dog in the new 'Fanzone ' area, and took it out of the designated exit to go in their seat turnstile with food only partly consumed?
