Surely he's not been selected based on current form

Pleased to see him selected, thought he played well for them in the Euros. As a Town fan, hope he finally breaks his international scoring duck during the two games.

yorksblue - what t a ridiculous comment, he was quality against Norwich and Ireland don't really have another striker like him. He was good in the Euros against France and Italy and I think Martin O'Neill might know what he's doing....

I'd settle for seeing Murphy score with a pair of scissors at the moment.

It would be great to see him get his first International goal, but I would prefer for him to rest up a bit. He isn't getting any younger and its a long season ahead.

James Vaughan ex Everton and Huddersfield, striker great scoring record 28 yrs but gone to Bury in league one for free.
This is who we should of gone for instead of Varney.

Come on Mick and Marcus get the Cheque book out.

There's a reason he's gone to Bury Miltonsnephew, he's a bit of a carthorse!

With Robbie Keane retiring from International football, could see McGoldrick added to the squad too.

Yorksblue - i have no idea why you've got so many minus points. You're bang on. Murphy should have 3 or 4 this season already. I'm sorry to break this to all those who watch games in hope but Murphy is a spent force.

The only way we'll be able to use him this season is if we use his strength and get Sears (or someone with more pace) playing off him.

Not great against Norwich in my opinion.

Here's hoping Murphy gets his first international goal, he's not getting any younger and he will sooner or later have to make the hard decision to retire from international football if he wants to prolong his league career - Robbie Keane hopes to keep playing for LA Galaxy.

The guy has been picked for his country but still that's an opportunity for some to have a go. Some fans are just moaning old gits. I suppose its been too hot today too - well it'll be raining soon so another opportunity to have a good old rant!. Blueboy1981 has finally retired so at least we are spared his or her drivel.

Oh yes Blueboy - it'll be a he then.

Anything of value to add about Murphy's performances so far this season Kirbmeister? To me, it looks like he needs a rest so this call up isn't good news.

It's not up to me it's up to the Iteland manager. He obviously doesn't know what he's doing.

Because Martin O'Neill has an abundance of International pedigree striker's to select from, right?

Well i have to say it the thought came straight into my head when i read the headline, pleased for the man to be selected, it must be a very proud moment pulling on your countries shirt!
But there is always the risk he will come back injured, and then we really are stuck up a gumtree!! i,m afraid its at times like this he should put his club first, we have a strike force misfirng, bit of a goal drought, injuries seem to be adding up very early, or maybe i,m being selfish?

Murphy isn't a spent force, his role will evolve as he gets older. He brings a lot to the team, most championship teams would love to have him involved in their squads

Would like to know how you think his role will evolve beyond what he's currently doing now Mutters? He plays up top on his own for large periods with the role of winning headers/flick-ons, holding the ball up, chasing lost causes, chasing balls into channels, harrying defenders, trying to poach in the box and playing off the shoulder of the last man...

Not sure how you can evolve much more than that. Too much is being asked if him and he looks leg weary to me. Many times this season Ward has flashed balls into the box and Murphy is nowhere to be season or on his heels.

I rate Murphy, always have but the writing is on the wall and Mick is flogging him rather than supporting him. Look at the 2nd half against the scum - completely isolated.

Robbie Keane paid a massive tribute to Mick McCarthy yesterday for the role he played in bringing him in to the International scene and managing him at that level.

If Murphs plays beside Robbie at any stage there is a good chance that there will be goals! Hopefully Murphs can nick one or two :)

have to agree with Keanish.

I actually thought Norwich was Murphs best performance for a while but his legs had gone after 70 mins having spent so long up there on his own with no support.

When he turns up Murphy can be a very good player for us. Unfortunately he doesn't "turn up" too often anymore. To get the best out of him he needs people close to him which doesnt happen when playing our 433 which is more a 451

Essextractor. Hardly a ridiculous comment. He had 1 reasonable game in Euros, but didn't score, was average v Norwich, and didn't score again. Perhaps ONeil is clinging on to a feint hope that he's bound to strike lucky v Mickey mouse opposition
