McCarthy Taking No Risks With Bishop's Fitness
Friday, 26th Aug 2016 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says midfielder Teddy Bishop was unfortunate not to keep his place in the starting line-up for last Sunday’s 1-1 East Anglian derby draw with Norwich but feels playing two games in a few days is difficult for the 20-year-old at the present time.

Bishop missed all but the final few weeks of last season with a succession of injuries and McCarthy isn’t taking any chances with the Cambridge-born academy product’s fitness.

“He was [unlucky], but he’d played in the week and he’s been out for 12 months, just about, and just playing week in, week out he finds difficult at the moment.

“He’s not being wrapped in cotton wool, it’s just getting his endurance back. Bish wasn’t out with a cruciate ligament where we could all go, ‘Wasn’t he unlucky?’ or a double fracture or something, it was all these different injuries that took their toll on him.

“It’s really difficult then, you come back and what I don’t want is him ending up injured through playing loads of games, so we want to get the best out of him.”

McCarthy recalled Kevin Bru to the centre of his midfield, who he felt in turn had been unfortunate to make way for Bishop as Town drew 0-0 at Wolves in the previous game.

“I’d sooner tell you about Kevin Bru and how he played against Norwich, I thought he was excellent,” McCarthy added.

“And I thought Kevin Bru was unlucky when I left him out and put Bish in. It’s nice that I’ve got that luxury.

“So rather than talk about the one that was left out, it’s the one that goes in that should be [spoken about].

“And, of course, if he doesn’t play well, then he knows that the other fella’s going to nick his slot.

“We’ve got some good midfield players, that’s probably another area I’m not looking at [adding to] if I consider it.”

McCarthy has been delighted with the impact Jonathan Douglas has made in the last two games and believes he can add goals to the midfield.

“I said to him, 'What do you reckon to the two games?'. I said well done to him, that he’d done well in both games. I asked about the Norwich game and did he think he had any chances.

“He said, ‘Did you not see the goal I scored!’. I said I did, I was reflecting more on the 90 minutes about getting in the box - did he get chances, did the ball come in - because he does get in the box and he has got that happy knack, certainly playing in a three.

“He’s got unbelievable energy and he’s a finisher. I think there’ll be goals from him.”

Kevin bry was excellent? I must have been watching another game to mick then? Every set piece he took didn't find a blue shirt and normally hot the first man. Shocking deliveries especially as we could threaten them at set pieces.

I agree Bru doesn't do it for me at set pieces & I thought he was poor Sunday.

Still prefer him to Douglas but we need Bish to give us creativity. I liked the look of Conor Grant as well and fear Freddie will be benched when he is fit..

Wham ever MM comments on a player doing well you always get
1 MM must have been watching a different game to me!!!!
2 "insert name" would be better

Classic example of people that have watched a few games or played manager games on a computer and think they are sir Bobby

I like Bru. He's an intelligent midfielder that has the ability to control the pace of a game, and always likes to get the ball into forward areas. However on Sunday, his set pieces especially, he was poor.

Mate Bru is bang average MuhrenCross. Assume you weren't at Brentford, he was awful.

Would Bru get into any other top 15 side in this league? No he wouldn't. Needs to up it. 1 goal / 3 assists or something of that per season for a " creative midfielder " is laughable.

Gives the ball away far too much for my liking and wants way too much time on the ball.

That said, clever management from Mick lets keep our problems internal. Douglas has been a lot better thus far, keep it up.

I like Bru generally and want him to do well however no-one will convince me that McCarthy really believes he had a good game vs Norwich particularly with corners and free kicks. He rarely if ever beats the first man and when he does there is no pace on the ball. You might as well have Knudsen hammer the ball into the box at least you might get a deflection on target.
Regarding Douglas I was quite pleased when we signed him from Brentford having come from a footballing team I thought he might signal a change of style but sadly he has proved to be next to useless either as a creative player holding player or goal scorer. More to come he says - you're having laugh. If he hadn't triggered his optional year I doubt he'd still be here.
As ever I hope I am proved to be wrong and Bru produces a pinpoint corner from which Douglas scores a blinding volley from the edge of the area but somehow I doubt it.
PS I'll settle for a crap corner and a scuffed shot going in after deflecting off a defender

Bru set pieces against Norwich were poor to say the least but he still had a very good game were any of you at the match or did you bottle it on your sofa!

Bru played well. Set pieces could improve though he did set up Douglas' goal. Just tell him not to shoot from 30 yards from a free kick, pointless.

Bru is awful. Does nothing for me. Always looking for the killer pass but never pulls it off. His set pieces are awful. Anyone who thinks he set up the Douglas 'goal' against Norwich is deluded. He put an average ball into the box which wasn't cleared well and was headed back into the box where Douglas put it away. And, bedsitfc, no I'm not an occasional supporter, I've missed just 5 home games in 44 years. And I don't have to be a Bobby Robson to know that McCarthy is talking crap when he's saying Bru played well. Like others, I'd love him to prove me wrong as I have seen some ability from him in the past but hasn't performed since early last season imo.

Bru has certainly got some ability but has a knack of going missing for long periods in games. I was personally disappointed with him last season as he had a great opportunity to be our creative flare we all craved especially with Bishop out all season and Fraser out for long spells but he couldn't grab the chance offered.

Blues1
missing my point
We watch as supporters so we see the players for 3hours a week at best.
MM knows there strengths and weaknesses much better than us because he is with them 30 hours a week or staff of the club are.
He is a vastly experienced manager and a real football man.
