Douglas: More to Come From Me
Friday, 26th Aug 2016 06:00

Experienced midfielder Jonathan Douglas has assured fans there is even more to come after his starring role in the recent draws at Wolves and at home to Norwich.

The former Republic of Ireland international, who recently celebrated the first anniversary of his move to Portman Road following his release by Brentford, said: “I think you probably saw the best of me in a few games last year but I think there’s still a lot more to come, not just from me but the entire team.

“At the end of the day, if the team are winning it’s not down to anybody individually. As long as we’re winning the team’s happy and everybody’s happy.

“It can be tough when you join a new club because with a new formation and a different way of playing it takes time to gel. But I felt really at home from the start here.

“The system we are playing at the moment suits me. I suppose it gives me licence to get into the box and hopefully chip in with the odd goal here and there.

“But we have a good team and it doesn’t matter what formation the manager plays. We just need to stick together when things aren’t going well and keep working hard because eventually it will turn.”

Douglas, who scored eight times in his final season with the Bees and has netted three times in his 43 appearances for Town, wants to contribute more goals and added: “As long as we can keep creating chances and I can get into the box I think I can get a few goals.

“Wardy [Grant Ward] coming in has helped and so does the way Freddie [Sears] plays, getting balls into the box. I’ll also be looking to pick up some scraps off Murph.”

The man from Monaghan, who also played for Blackburn, Leeds and Swindon, knows he has not always been a favourite of supporters. He admitted: “You’re always aware of it. When you’re on social media it’s hard not to read about it but it’s part and parcel of being a footballer.

“They’re not happy if things are not going well — but we’re not happy either. We don’t like going into games and not getting the three points, not putting in the level of performance that we know we’re capable of doing, and I think in the last couple of games we know we’ve done really well.”

Douglas would be happy to extend his stay with Town to a third season, adding: “I’m very happy here. Ever since I walked through the door the lads have made me feel at home.

“People like Chambo, he’s the main man who gels the team together. I’ve got a lot of respect for him as captain and the way he goes about it. I’ve no reason to leave and would be happy to extend my contract to stay at the club.”

Thought he did really well last week, def playing in a 3 with slightly more cover allows him to get in the box more with a bit more cover..

People still too quick to get on his back, 2nd half vs Norwich he flicked a header on to nobody when in acres of space, many people gave him stick rather than asking why not one player told him he had time to bring it down!

Really like the look of Jonny Douglas in a midfield 3, constantly trying to break into the box- he'll get a few goals this year

Douglas has been much maligned since he got here but credit where it's due he was excellent against Norwich.

Sorry but he still gave the ball away consistently last week and the one time he played it forward he put it out for a goal kick when it was a simple 10 yard pass.
Worked harder than normal but not good enough if we are looking to finish top 6. Skuse Grant Bru and Bishop should be fighting over the 3 spots.

His performance on Sunday is what I was expecting every week when we signed him but the system didn't really suit him last year, maybe a midfield 3 will help him thrive

thebeat. I agreed with your first part slightly until you said Bru should be playing ahead of Douglas. Absolutely clueless.

He gets a lot of stick, some justified, some not. And ironically our other much maligned player also put the ball in the back of the net last Sunday! It's Sears who's woefully off form at the moment.

Agree sears is definitely not in the team on merit at the moment. I hold my hands up regarding douglas . Not my favourite player by any stretch but he is earning his place atm.

Thought he played well against Norwich. However, no one will ever convince me we should be starting with Skuse/Douglas particularly at home!

His 'starring role' - hahaha! lets not go over the top here, just because he has a disallowed goal and has an ok'ish game. Stop taunting us!

More to come from you? I should bloody hope so, mate!

And does that 'more' entail energy and accurate passing? Let's start there and see how we go.
