McCarthy Confirms Murphy Joining Newcastle
Saturday, 27th Aug 2016 17:35

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that striker Daryl Murphy will be joining Newcastle United having handed in a transfer request.

“It's disappointing to lose Daryl but I can understand his reasons for wanting to go to Newcastle and we wish him well,” McCarthy told Ipswich Town HD

"Murph has been great for me over the past few years but it's a good deal all round. I didn't want to keep an unhappy player.”

Why unhappy?

Can understand wanting to finish his career on a high - and earn considerably more money in the process - but why unhappy?

Good business selling a 33yo for cash only if we replace with quality.

Fab 2 years back, so-so last year. Still yet to score for Ireland. Sad to see him go, just hope we don't get fleeced for him. And we get to reinvest.

Sad to see big Murph go - he's been great to the club. Millions+ deal though for a 33 year old whose best season is behind him is good business though providing we replace him. Since we have some goals finally coming from the midfield this season (I'm counting Douglas for arguments sake) now may be the right time to let go of an integral part of our strike force. Thanks for everything Daryl and COYB

All the best Daryl and thanks for the goals.
Here's hoping that last seasons moan about needing more goals from midfield isn't replaced by we need more goals from our strikers.
Funny game football.

Still to this day I don't know why players are unhappy when they are paid thousands a week whether they play or not!!

Also means by handing in a request we pay Murphy less as a pay off as he asked to go rather than the club just selling him.
Great servant and good luck to him (except when he comes up against us of course)

'Unhappy' helps get the move done. I'm sure Murphy was fine at Ipswich but I guess when that last big move comes along you have to make it abundantly clear that you want to go.

Shame if he's felt he had to hand in a transfer request. Not sure why that would be, as always seemed to intimate he was happy here and in the area... But all the best Daryl, you've always worked hard for the team and we've enjoyed having you.

When he heard about the interest and Mick said we've said no he became unhappy....thus handing in transfer request, his head got turned....can't blame him really, good luck to him..

What an asset he has been to this club the last few years, will be a big shame to see him go but wish him well

Now we NEED a good replacement, Leon Best is not it...

Needs to kick-on now if he's to fulfill his ambition of playing in a World Cup. Now Keane has retired they'll need a leader and given they have zero stars coming through and nobody under the age of 27 vying for a starting place, its a great opportunity for him to get a regular Ireland start.

He'll stand more chance of this with Newcastle who are bound to bounce straight back. All the best to him.

Disappointing Murphy submitted a transfer request, but you can't argue Newcastle is a big club. We now need to hope the fee is sizeable and every last penny is reinvested. We need a quality replacement, possibly another striker, a right back, winger and a goalscoring central player. Appreciate the right back won't happen, nor the goalscoring central midfielder. Think we will get two, hopefully both will be permanent signings. We have saved on Murphs wages.

3 managers (well 1 and 2 with the job title) and 3 different eras but what a player and servant. Can only wish him all the best and hope to see him do well now.

Disappointing news, but if he's unhappy and we have been offered over 3m for him then it's understandable. I do hope this time that there is real investment in the squad rather than just bringing Best and Shelton in. Two free transfers won't replace Murphy and we now need a replacement target man.

I'm sure I read a little while back, Murph's happy here and family is settled.
Just shows money talks, hope he gets a good contract, 2-3 years on good money?!
Fully deserved for a great servant to the club!

Seems strange a manager of Benitez would look at Murphy, I'm sure he has all the contacts all around the world and a bottomless sack of Money to spend.
Just shows how Highly rated Murphy is.

I don't see us for £3.5mill getting anyone near as close to Murphy is and has been for us.
I hope Mick is allowed to reinvest. The money on a Young Hungry player, now Murphy is going, we need better then BEST.
I can see why Varney came in, stop gap for Murphys replacement can imagine this transfer has been bubbling along all summer.

Billy Sharp I'd rather have then Best, we need another powerful Murphy type player, I just don't see us getting them.

But I hope I'm wrong. MILTON!!!

Sad about this. Granted, he's not been as prolific as that great season, but he's key to our whole style of play and I worry that pitman isn't quite the same kind of player.

All very well people saying we need to find a young hungry replacement, but every club in the world is in the lookout for a striker and they simply don't come up that often. I'm now sure that we'll get Best, but will that be enough?

I think as someone has already said he ended up "handing in" a transfer request as part of the financial agreement to let him go rather than his dissatisfaction and means we don't have to settle any outstanding contract entitlements for "selling" him.
Good luck to him for his final big payday & a possible final year or two in the Premiershp ...... hopefully against us still !!

No disrespect to Leon Best or Luton Shelton. Just saying they are both very different players to Murphs.

I don't get all the negativity surrounding Leon best! When Murphy first signed for us on loan he was hardly pulling up trees was he! He's turned out to be a great servant and I give him my blessing but let's give players a chance before we judge them! Ok.. So he's had a shed load of clubs but mick and TC have a knack of getting the BEST out of players (see what I done there 😜) and we shouldn't write him off before he's signed. I've a feeling we will sign him and a couple of loans before the window closes

Cracking player for us.Gave 100% every game which is all you ask. All the best in future. Big test for ITFC now - need to invest money in a couple of replacements.

Club has to say no! Obviously he wants to go but the club has to say no and stay firm
