U23s Draw Liverpool, Huddersfield and West Brom in Premier League Cup
Tuesday, 6th Sep 2016 13:49

Town’s U23s have been drawn with Liverpool, Huddersfield and West Brom in the group stages of the new Premier League Cup, which replaces the U21 Premier League Cup

The competition emulates the format of the Champions League with 32 teams involved in the group stage and the top two in each going through to the last 16.

From there the ties will be one-off, knockout games with extra-time and penalties if required.

The first match, which will be at home to Liverpool, will be played between Friday 30th September and Sunday October 2nd, with the knockout phase starting in mid-March and the final in mid-May.

Interesting format - May get a decent gate of sorts for the Liverpool game on the Friday.

Sounds as though it might make for some more competitive games which can only be of benefit to the fringe players, and be a bit more attractive to go and watch.

Having said that regarding the Under 23s, I'm still not a fan of The Champions League being in this format, as it should be as the old European Cup was, a competition for the national champions of each member country.

Interesting. Depending on dates/times will try to make the Liverpool and Huddersfield away games.

Now that looks a lot more interesting for both our Club and supporters, and give our U23 team something to really play for, a chance to mix with the big boys.
