McGoldrick "More Positive and Brighter" as He Closes in On Return
Thursday, 15th Sep 2016 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy says striker David McGoldrick is feeling “more positive and brighter” as he closes in on his return to action, having felt down after suffering a freak ankle injury in the EFL Cup defeat to Stevenage early last month.

The 28-year-old has faced more than his fair share of injury woe in recent seasons and suffered the latest problem when he landed awkwardly on his ankle and damaged ligaments.

Initially there were fears that the Republic of Ireland international might require surgery but the frontman has made good progress without having to go under the surgeon’s knife.

McCarthy says McGoldrick, who has spent much of his recuperation back home in Nottingham, was deeply frustrated but is now looking forward to his return.

“You can see that he’s got over that, I spoke to him [earlier in the week],” McCarthy said. “For the first couple of weeks he was just mortified, really down.

“But you get that first five weeks out of the way and he’s on the up now, he’s got to the halfway point in his 10 to 12 weeks.

“He’s now looking at his end date rather than thinking that 10 or 12 weeks seems such a long time away. I just thought he was a lot more positive and brighter.”

Rolling your ankle is not deemed a 'freak injury' - standard sport injury

Well, let's hope he doesn't pick up anyone long term injuries then!

I'm a massive, massive fan of Didzy, but I think he should be given one last chance! He needs to play 30+ games a season. We need his ability and composure on the ball more than anything, but I must say though, when we have a fully fit squad and we have every right to be challenging the top six.

I thought his family lived with him in Ipswich but it says he is in Nottingham with his family.

He is easily our best player but we need him back and fit. I am surprised he is not with our physios doing light training but perhaps he's not ready for that yet.

Unfortunately the injury came just after the summer break and we haven't seen anything of him this season. At the end of last season he was showing how good he can be. Let's hope he can get back to how he was when he first came to Town. At least we know he can score when fit and we certainly need strikers who can get goals at the moment!

A long term sick note, you cant plan anything with him. Get on with what we have and off load him.

Don't believe he will play more than a handful of games , probably why he was released by other clubs . Think we should be building a game plan around a young playmaker ?

Be could be World Class and it would make no difference to us because he's NEVER bloody fit and hasnt been for his ENTIRE period with ITFC.

He's a sick note of the highest order and this Club is paying silly money for someone that gives nothing back. If we added up the wages paid to Didsy since he's been at this Club pro rata games played he will be THE most expensive signing thus club has ever had......and for what??

He'll be back in the warmth of the treatment room come January.

Good to see the usual optimistic Town fans on here! He's a player with bags of quality this injury was in no way related to any of his previous I think writing him off is a bit harsh. Hope when Didz comes back fit he does the business!!!

Personal views are that previously his heart wasn't fully in for playing for Ipswich town due to town not letting him go to Leicester.. since that the injuries keep repeating themselves. However, now with the arrival of Leon best (friends from an early age).. i reckon this has put a spring in his step and will start to see a more improved and injury free Didzy (personally). Didz is still by far our best technical player and is a great asset to Ipswich when fully fit and most importantly, in a happier place.

Is there a mind the step sign on the way out of the treatment room?

Ooh, I'm really looking forward to the 20 minute cameo that proceeds his next three month injury layoff

Realistically given his injury record I doubt he'll stay fit for the rest of the season once he regains fitness. If him and Williams manage to start 40 games between them this season, their extra quality may well make the difference in terms of getting in the play-offs.

Burn zee. I don't think McGoldricks qualities and importance to this team have ever been disputed. But what you and many other fail, it seems, to be able to do is divorce his attributes from his injury record. It is the latter, which has blighted his career at any Club, and why we were able to pick him up on a free. But oh my, what a liability we took on. His injury record appears to have blighted all his career. He's fragile, not unlike another "superstar", Keiron Dyer. Didsy''s injury proneness will continue. The only question to be asked , is how many games he will manage before he's out once again for far, far, far longer than he is ever fit. Like it or not he us actually of little use to Mick Mccarthy on the treatment table. As someone else has pointed out, MM is simply unable to plan anything around our "star" player.

When he's in his next "fit window", I'd suggest we offload and get a fee for him. It certainly won't cover the cost he has been to this Club to date.

If Didz is in Nottingham he can make himself useful on Saturday by supporting Forest when they play the scum.

Hard to get too excited at yet another Didsy return without assuming it wont be long before he's out sick again. Decent player on his day, but no use being infrequently decent if you hardly ever play. I think his goal ratio is around one in three when fit, yet he's only played roughly half of the games he should be eligible for.

Unfortunately even in the brief spells he was fit he wasn't the player he was pre-2014, agreed he won't play more than a handful of games this season. Shame really as he did offer us something different going forwards.

Agree with you TimmyH, even injury free I can't see him regaining his pre-2014 form.

There's no doubt in my mind that a fit and MOTIVATED McGoldrick is our most creative player. But i don't think his motivation has fully been there since he was stopped going to Leicester and their success since then clearly won't help. I wonder also how he will now view Murphy's big money move as well and suspect he will think that should of been him.

I'm just sick to death of Cole Skuse starting to be honest.

He is absolute useless. Douglas is a much better footballer and actually wants to pass the ball.

McGoldrick fit and Williams fit will hopefully see people in midfield becoming an option. Skuse not once asked for the ball at his feet unless it was a second ball that fell perfectly to him - in which he then went sideways or backwards! BORING. GET RID.

My guess is that there is more to this than meets the eye. I suspect there maybe mental health issues, such as depression involved here.

Why is his home in Nottingham and not Ipswich?
Must be all the travelling that wears him out !

Chance then for him to put in a couple of performances in advance of the winter transfer window?

Agree ArnieM. Much as I like Didsy, he could be the best player in the world but what use is that to us if he is always injured?
