Pitman and Webster Out, Emmanuel and Best Start
Monday, 26th Sep 2016 13:56

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that Brett Pitman and Adam Webster have joined his already lengthy injury list but better news is that Grant Ward is fit for Tuesday’s home game against Brighton along with Teddy Bishop, while Josh Emmanuel and Leon Best will both start.

Pitman (knee and ankle), Webster (hamstring) and Ward (knee) all suffered their injuries in Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Leeds.

“Two of them are out, Pits, as you’d imagine, and Adam Webster with his hamstring,” McCarthy said.

“They’ve both just returned having had scans and we’ll see the extent of the damage, but neither will be fit for tomorrow night or Saturday. But Grant Ward is all right, he’s trained today.”

McCarthy confirmed that Bishop, who broke his nose in the home game against Aston Villa, will be in the squad.

“He’s wearing the protective mask, he’s got the Phantom of the Opera mask,” the Town boss added. “He’s having his nose reset tonight, that’s not the best preparation for anybody but he’s fit and he’s available and he’ll be in the squad.”

But Luke Varney remains sidelined with the hamstring problem he picked up in the 4-0 U23s victory over Leeds last Monday: “Luke Varney is another one, it’ll probably be after international break now.”

Loanee Jonny Williams is training with the squad but is not ready to be included in the 18 after his ankle injury, while Tommy Smith (back surgery), Luke Hyam (knee), David McGoldrick (ankle) and Giles Coke (knee) are all still out, along with young midfielder Adam McDonnell, who is also currently undergoing treatment.

McCarthy says Freddie Sears and Kevin Bru reported problems after the Leeds match but were involved at Playford Road today.

“Freddie’s been in nursing a tight groin and Kevin Bru had a tight thigh yesterday but they both trained,” he added. “I don’t need any more problems, that’s plenty for me.”

The Blues manager confirmed that 19-year-old Josh Emmanuel will start at right-back with skipper Luke Chambers moving into the middle.

“Josh is playing,” he said. “Whenever he’s played he’s done OK, he’s played well. It was nothing to do with him not playing well when he got left out, it’s just that I’ve had a very settled back four and they’re all regulars. Opportunity knocks for him."

McCarthy also confirmed that Leon Best will make his first start for the Blues up front having impressed him as a sub in the last two games.

Going to be interesting to see how the rearranged back four get on. A real shame for Webster to miss out but doesn't sound like anything serious.

Good to see Grant Ward available too, and Leon Best has something to prove so should be really up for this game in particular being ex Brighton.

Brighton fans seemingly less than complimentary about Best according to Harry's report. Hopefully Best is bang at it and scores past them. We will need to be on top of our game to get anything out of it. Good opportunity for Emmanuel, but out of necessity and not choice it seems. Hopefully he has learnt from last season when Brighton ripped him a new 1

We need to get behind the team tomorrow night - a raucous, edgey atmosphere might just scrape us a 1-0.

Genuinely gutted going to miss this one (holiday) as the excitement of seeing a proper right back is almost too much to bear !

I suppose the fact he's mentioned that Best and Emmanuel will start, and only said Bishop will be in the squad suggests that Bru will likely be ahead of Bishop tomorrow. If Bishop is fit enough to play, should certainly be in front of Bru.

We've all begged for Emmanuel to play and Chambo to go to Centre Back - so here it goes...

Unfortunately by force not choice - however the kid is good, hope he gets 2 good games and 2 clean sheets to cement him in Mick's mind!

Would ideally like to see Webster come back in for Berra when he's fit - got Chris Wood's goal horribly wrong!

Well it's up to Emmanuel to do a Bart and make the place his over the next couple of games.

It's an ill wind that.......... but so pleased that Emmanuel has another chance. Against Brighton it'll be tough so hope he can continue and secure rb for rest of season!! If Chambers has good one then maybe MM will have to rethink his central positions.

At last ill fortune has made mad mick put a youngster in at right back which should have been done a long while ago.

A 0-0 is the best we can hope for. no goals in this selection

Says it all really (i have a regular settled back four) so it doesn't matter how good you are unless someone gets injured you are not getting in simple as that.We have the same thing going on in centre midfield,,but good luck Josh i hope you have a blinder you will not to play that well to be better than the previous r/b.

Good luck Josh, a tough game to come in for but a chance to shine! Let's hope that the rest of the team, and the crowd, give you the support you deserve. And let's hope that you have a blinder.

Bit strange how McCarthy says "opportunity knocks" for Josh Emmanuel in the same week as he's said Chambers will start the next 30 games regardless of how he plays.

Well to be honest I'm very pleased that Emanuel & Best will start.
Be great to see a proper rb.
I'm so surprised he hasn't put Digby in the team & keeping Chambers at rb.
It's up to Emanuel & Best to prove they can keep their places in the team.
A better result please town.

Even if Emmanuel is MotM against Brighton and Huddersfield, he will be back on the bench once Mick can pick his normal back 4 again. Getting fed up with Mick's stubborn reliance on his favourites. Pitman is not good enough to lead the line whilst we continue to play the way we do. Bru shouldn't get a game unless he has too and constantly playing Douglas and Skuse in deep holding roles is soooooo frustrating. Also play Sears in a central striker role or not at all. We are going to get a very good idea of where our season is heading after the next 2 games....

Good, i think Leon is our 'Best' option upfront right now.
Love him or hate him, Mick McCarthy is the manager so get over it and get behind him cause no one cares what posters say and thats a fact jack

Lets see just how Mr Emmanuel does tomorrow.

Brighton absolutely ruined him last time around, subbed off half time. Lets hope a year on he's ready.

Praying Josh Emmanuel has a cracker for the next fees games. Although it won't be enough for him to keep his place I can't bear to see MM justifying playing Chambers there a Moment longer.
