McCarthy Resisting Temptation to Rush Williams Back to Action
Thursday, 29th Sep 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he will resist the temptation to rush Jonny Williams back into action after the ankle injury which has so far prevented the Wales international from making his fourth Blues’ debut.

Williams rejoined Town on a season-long loan on deadline day but suffering from an ankle injury he picked up in pre-season with parent club Crystal Palace.

McCarthy left the 22-year-old out of his squad for Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Brighton despite the Wales international having joined in training with the Town squad earlier in the week.

“He’s not in the 18, he’s just come back after six weeks off and he’s trained with us and he looks fine on that small pitch,” McCarthy said prior to the Seagulls' visit.

“I’ve got a duty of care to players. The temptation is to say, ‘Let’s put Jonny on the bench and we might get 20 minutes out of him’.

“But I seem to remember doing that at Sheffield Wednesday [in September 2014] when he scored the equaliser and he came off because he had a tight thigh, although he continued to play.

“If he was my player, which he is now for the moment, when they’ve been off that long without having had an U23s game or a behind-closed-doors or reserves game none of them would play in the first team. I think that’s probably what’s going to have to happen with Jonny.”

Williams is likely to play in an U23s game during the international break and seems likely to be in the Blues squad for the first time at Blackburn on Saturday 15th October.

Nowt like signing an injured player, crazy decision to waste a space in our squad on someone out for 8 weeks when we signed him.

Not sure I'd agree..

Under new rules if we didn't sign him in August we wouldn't have him until January at the earliest. If - and it could be a big if with his injury record - he is outstanding in November & December we will all say well done MM.

A gamble but in my view one worth taking on a player of this standard & quality.

Some say about his injury record, but did anyone see that tackle at him against Watford. I think most players would take a while to recover from that!

Not going to rush him back because you may have to drop one of Skuse/ Douglas/Bru and they have all been proper brilliant , and Williams needs to learn how to tackle and defend properly

This league is won and lost in the SECOND half of the season. That's when putting a run together and having your key players available is vital. The January window is crucial, when new signings can make OR break a club's chances.

With no opportunities for loans, protecting players has never been more important.

By the way cheer up everybody. Norwich lost. Tee hee.......

Very true @Ferguson but other than the first (part) season when we were trying to get away from the relegattion zone when Mick was here he hasn't been able to get us playing consistently at all in the 2nd half of a season, usually kicking off in the New Year with a poor performance in the FA Cup.

Shame we've got a lot of injuries at present as once again it will give Mick a 'get out of jail' card - the sooner they get back and playing the more it will test Mick management with an abundance of midfield options and if results are still inconsistent the more the finger can be pointed at him.
