McCarthy Among Managers Linked With Villa But Bruce Strong Favourite
Monday, 3rd Oct 2016 11:50

Town boss Mick McCarthy is among the managers being linked with the Aston Villa job following Roberto Di Matteo’s sacking earlier today, however, Steve Bruce, who left Hull City in the summer, is currently an odds-on favourite with some bookies.

McCarthy is around seventh or eighth favourite at around the 16/1 mark at the time of writing.

Di Matteo was dismissed by Villa after just 124 days, having won only once in his 11 Championship games in charge.

The Town boss was previously mentioned in connection with then-Premier League Villa in April when he admitted that the link was “flattering” and was coy when asked to rule himself out of the running.

McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor signed new contracts with the Blues in January which run until the summer of 2018 with options for two further seasons.

The Town boss's deal also includes a buy-out clause, which he outlined in December last year.

“It’s a clause to buy me out and it’s pretty restrictive enough that nobody’s even going to bother [asking owner Marcus Evans],” he said.

Would love MM to go but realistically I would take Bruce .

FAO all the haters - Big Mick really must be doing a dreadful jobif he's being linked with other jobs.

If he goes to Villa he will take them up because unlike our chairman he will be backed and given the resources to do the job, no asked to trawl around the bargain basement.

You can diss his style of football (as I have done myself) but how MM has got us in and around the Play Offs 3 years running with what he's had to work with is nothing short of a miracle and sadly all you lot will only realise it when he's gone.

Be VERY careful what you wish for .......

If only I had a few million quid, I'd trigger the buy out clause and send him to Carrow Road.

Need a lift Mick? Sadly Though I'd be amazed if he did, he's got it way to cushy here.

Pencilpete, what do you think he would need/ have to happen to get us promoted ?

Don't know why Villa would pay to have McCarthy when they could get Bruce for free.

A better idea would be for Villa to take Mick and we have Brucey!!

@Pencilpete

Careful what you wish for... what like boring negative football, diving fans away in their 1000's and a club going nowhere and plummeting toward div 1. Yeah, things really could get worse!

Mick has been linked with a few clubs over the last year...none have come to fruition, to me his tactics and managerial style are those of a manager who'll get you OUT of trouble and sort out the 'floaters' in the squad not for a club looking for promotion. Football has moved on in the last 6/7 years in terms of style and approach.

PLEASE!

People have said “be careful what you wish for” and “who could do any better?” and “we haven't got any money to spend”.

Well, yes, I am very careful what I wish for and I wish he'd go before our beloved club slips down the league and our affections any further.

And as to who could do any better? A young hungry manager from a lower league club keen to make a name for himself? Or someone from abroad with no favourites or loyalty to players in the English league? Or maybe the ghost of Isambard Kingdom Brunel? As any of these would do a better job!

And yes, we're not getting and funds from ME but we have a relatively large squad, and some good players (who aren't necessarily getting games), and there are other clubs doing well without spending a fortune.

Time for a change.

I've heard we're getting big Sam in, Bruce as his number 2, my brothers mates uncles cousin is a high profile football agent, I spoke to him last night.

He also said Paul Jewell is a shoe in for the England job, so he knows his stuff.

I've said to much already.......

Christ alive lets give Mick some form of credit shall we and not completely vilify his stay with us. Yes I'm alarmed at what's going on here, however we do have a ridiculous injury list which doesn't help and I'm hoping when a few are back we can pick up. That said, if results continue as they are then the trigger will have to be pushed.

If Mick were to leave, I honestly couldn't tell you who I would like as our next gafa. Steve Bruce maybe. A bit leftfield but I'd be tempted to get Daryl Clarke from Bristol Rovers. Successive promotions, plays open attacking footy, never settles for a draw, great character and would have the players playing for the shirt.

I will drive him there! They want him to steady the ship which he will do, then it will b what has happened at wolves, Sunderland and now here! He brings in better players who can play yet still doesn't have the tactical knowhow to play any other way. As much as I hate the dark lord he summed up the Dino back in 2002. What the hell they do on the training pitch is beyond me. 40 years + watching town and never have we been such a disgrace. An owner who never addresses the fans and allegedly caught up in all sorts, and a manager who's tatictics could be drafted on a fag packet. Even in the bad times we were always credited with being a well run proper football club that was entertaining and we were generally held up as an example in England and abroad. We can't say that now can we.! It's beyond me how the McCarthy lovers can defend him or the club in the current state. They say we aren't proper fans, but I say this-perhaps it's our love of our once great club that we voice our thoughts and opinions! How we are now hurts me and many many others. If they are happy with how things are then I'm flabbergasted and shows that any sort of sh.t will do. Not entertainment for me but I will always be blue and attend matches as ITFC is such a huge part of mine and other people's life. COYB

The problem with Mick is with his current budget he has very little room for manoeuvre. He would get good backing at Villa and think he would do well. However, his days at Ipswich with his negative approach must surely soon be over.

Mark added 12:23 - Oct 3
Mick has over achieved results wise at ITFC based on funds available, but those funds will get ever smaller as fans give up watching the team due to the style of play. Setting up to stop opponents playing week-in-week-out is no fun and not worth the £27+ entrance fee (+travel). We just don't seem to be able to pass the ball like other teams and this isn't good for our reputation.

@Pencilpete - completely agree with you.

With that in mind, here's my very careful wish: for a better manager who wants to play a far more attractive style of football. Not Mick McCarthy.

Ah, look at that, I seem to have reached the end of my argument.

McCarthy OUT

If they just want to stay in this league and never get promoted then Micks their man, but I'm afraid his style of football is now out of touch with the modern game and he will never change.

I really like mick. He's done a great job here and i'd be happy with him as our manager for many years to come with serious financial backing from the chairman. However, we're stagnating. If we don't have the financial clout for a promotion challenge, we need to stop trying so hard to scrape the playoffs by playing ugly and get back to playing football. And so if villa put up the money and want to take him, i'd be ok with that.

First of all I am not accusing anyone of not being a real fan, I respect all of your opinions in the same way I hope you respect mine regardless of wether you agree with me or not. At the end of the day this is a discussion forum and the world would be a very boring place if we all agreed :)

With regards to what MM needs to get us promoted i'd say a few million quid not the £20m which Keane was given but maybe the £5m Jewell was. Mick's proven when he has been given a few quid he has spent relatively well ... Knudsen, Mings, Sears all proven ... Webster and Ward the early signs are very promising.

His poor signings .. your Cokes and Toures ETC have all been free transfers and they will always be hit and miss, some will come with a point to prove others will be looking for a last decent payday. this is where Mick has come unstuck because he isn't getting money he has to take more punts, Mick is also a victim of his own success to an extent because Evans saw him sneak us into the Play Offs 2 years ago and now thinks he can restrict his spending and hopefully sooner or later Mick will sneak us in there again.

I do think Mick has been too negative with his team selection and tactics and it infuriates me seeing Skuse and Douglas in the same midfield passing it sideways and backwards BUT the negativity on the pitch is not MM, I sit right behind the dugout and the amount of times Mick screams at them to 'push up' and 'go forwards' is ridiculous but again that begs the question if he isn't happy with what he's seeing why doesn't he change things ? That I obviously don't know.

I do know think that Mick has done a good job over the last 4 years with what he has had to work with and of the names being banded around last year - Karl Robinson, Darren Ferguson to name a couple both got their clubs relegated playing 'better football'

I am not a Mick lover but I respect the man and believe his achievements so far (our finishes of 9th, 6th and 7th with almost no money spent compared with the 15th, 13th and 14th Keane and Jewell delivered having spent a fortune) should allow our club to give him at least more time AND MONEY to sort things out.

Finally, I watch the circus going on at clubs like Leeds and Aston Villa and I am so so grateful that our club has never been a sacking club that we have good, knowledgeable fans who are some of the most patient in the English game IMO - i'd rather support a club that backs it's manager rather than pulls the trigger every 5 minutes.

Villa didn't contact the club last time MM was linked and they certainly wont now after playing us a few weeks ago and seeing what we produce .

Our injury crisis stops Bishop, Grant , Dozzell, Sears up top , Emmanuel playing does it ? Oh no just very poor selection .

Heres a clue MM you broke the Skuse / Douglas partnership up at the end of last season and first game of this season and we scored in every game including shock horror 3 and 4 goals in a game it hasn't happened since you put them back together and now we don't score at all ?

The problem for MM is expectation.

When he took over there was none apart from relegation if things didn't improve. The safety first approach worked & results improved. The improvement was enough to get us nearer the top than bottom but we quite rightly want that maintaining.

The last 18 months the performances have not been good. It doesn't help being told after every game that it was a good performance when we have seen that it wasn't.

I am not in favour of sacking managers after a short time - Di Matteo has been manager for 11 games & sacking him that early is a joke.

However MM has been given plenty of time to improve performances &persists in picking he same players & playing the same way. Much as he is a nice guy I have to say I think it is time for a change.
