Academy Chiefs Take on New Roles
Monday, 10th Oct 2016 18:13

Academy chiefs Bryan Klug and Lee O’Neill have taken on new roles at Playford Road.

Klug, who returned to the Blues youth set-up in 2012 as academy manager, will be the head of coaching and player development, while O’Neill will be the academy manager with the structure of academies continually evolving.

Klug’s new role will see him involved more on the training ground, assessing the development of young players and also responsible for the progress of full-time and part-time coaching staff.

In his new position O’Neill, who has been Klug’s assistant for two years, will focus on the administrative side of running an academy.

Town currently run a Category Two academy, which is currently in the process of being audited. Longer-term the Blues still aim for Category One.

Now if only Klug was to take charge of all coaching and player development including the first team squad maybe Town would abandon hoofball and play proper football again.

This is very good news.

The more Klug is directly involved on the training ground with our academy players the better, as I think this is where his really talent lies, based on what ex-players have said about him in interviews over the years.

Agreed Bluetone. Our youth level plays in a totally different way to our first team. That just doesn't make sense. I've wondered on the forum if a Klug/Gerard Nash partnership could manage the first team after Mick. Or perhaps Klug and Shefki! I reckon the fans would unite behind those guys. We'd have a passing style from Klug and the blood and guts determination of Shefki!

Klug's already had a brief stint in the dugout next to Jim hasn't he?

I think there is a massive difference between coaching players to being a manager of a Club and dealing with hiring/ firing of players. Dealing with contracts/ budgets within the game. TC wasn't able to make that transition and I honestly don't think Klug could or more importantly, would even want to. But I can see were the thoughts came from to suggest Klugs potential role.

Manager and assistant manager would be good.
Far better than the anti-football blaggers we have at the moment.
Time for change.

Klug probably doesn't want to be a first team manager or coach - he'd surely have had the chance for such a role by now. What would be far more beneficial for ITFC is having a first team manager/coach aligned with the principals of the 'junior' coaching. It's a football *club* after all.

On one level it's good news to have Klug involved more in players' development but it's pretty meaningless, in terms of the senior team, if the first team manager is not utilising that development.

The cynic in me wonders if this is ME looking for improvements in the junior players in order to generate greater revenues from player sales. Little sign so far that Evans is investing money from transfers back into the first team squad.

Keep the first team ticking over, sell players to cut losses, continue owning ITFC as a tax dodge. If we happen to get promoted at some point, then he's laughing. And if not, then he's happy enough for the status quo to remain.

Arnie - it's hard to tell, everyone's different. Yes TC couldn't step up... but then again Mourinho went from being an interpreter to being one of the best football managers in the world.

Alongside someone else, as I suggested (Shefki fancies the job, although I've no idea how well he's doing) could work. I'd love to see Klug's ethos at first team level, and as MrBlueHeaven says, having the whole club aligned.
