McGoldrick in Reduced Ireland Squad
Monday, 7th Nov 2016 20:10

Striker David McGoldrick has been included in the final Republic of Ireland squad for their World Cup qualifier against Austria in Vienna on Saturday.

McGoldrick, who has previously won four caps, so far without scoring, missed out on a place at Euro 2016 having been named in the provisional squad for Ireland's pre-tournament friendlies.

Also in the 28-man squad, which has been reduced from the initial 35-strong party named last week, is former Town skipper Jonathan Walters, but Daryl Murphy isn't involved having struggled with a calf injury since his move to Newcastle.

Dundalk winger Daryl Horgan, who was again watched by Blues scouts at the weekend, has also retained his place having received his first senior call-up.

Ireland, who are currently joint top of their group with seven points from three games, will train at the FAI National Training Centre in Dublin before departing for Vienna on Thursday.

Republic of Ireland: Darren Randolph (West Ham United), Keiren Westwood (Sheffield Wednesday), Colin Doyle (Bradford City), Seamus Coleman (Everton), Richard Keogh, Alex Pearce (Derby County), John O'Shea (Sunderland), Ciaran Clark (Newcastle United), Paul McShane (Reading), Shane Duffy (Brighton & Hove Albion), Andy Boyle (Dundalk), Aiden McGeady (Preston North End, on loan from Everton), James McClean (West Bromwich Albion), Jeff Hendrick (Burnley), Glenn Whelan (Stoke City), Harry Arter (Bournemouth), Eunan O'Kane (Leeds United), David Meyler (Hull City), Stephen Gleeson (Birmingham City), Robbie Brady, Wes Hoolahan (Norwich City), Callum O'Dowda (Bristol City), Jonathan Hayes (Aberdeen), Daryl Horgan (Dundalk), Jonathan Walters (Stoke City), Adam Rooney (Aberdeen), Kevin Doyle (Colorado Rapids), David McGoldrick (Ipswich Town).

Good chance for Didz to do some scouting on Daryl Horgan!

Didz has a good chance to play, can't see Rooney or Doyle being ahead of him.
Probably Walters and Holohan up front to start and Didz to come on if needed to change the game

Congrats Didz!

Happy for Didzy! But god i hope he doesn't get hurt! We need a fit McGolrdrick for the coming months massively. Whether we finish 6th 12th or 18th players like him are massively key!

Lightningboy - he's fit and therefore should be playing for his country. It will improve his fitness even more. If he gets injured that's back luck bit it's ridiculous to say he should be resting.

The guy may be playing for his country and still all the negativity about possibly getting injured. I think the more game time the better. He's a footballer not a piece of porcelain.
Good luck McG, hope you ply and score.

It's not negativity when it's true. His track record on staying uninjured isn't exactly inspiring. Great player when he's fit.

Point taken about potential injury but I personally feel a little more pride when I see one of ours in an international squad list. Even more when they win a cap.
