Ex-Blue Cresswell Makes England Debut
Tuesday, 15th Nov 2016 22:00

Ex-Town left-back Aaron Cresswell made his England debut as a 79th minute sub as Gareth Southgate’s side drew 2-2 with Spain in this evening's friendly at Wembley.

Adam Lallana netted an eighth minute penalty for England, then Jamie Vardy made it 2-0 four minutes after the break, but Iago Aspas pulled one back on 89 and Isco completed the Spanish comeback five minutes into injury time.

Cresswell, 26, was with Town between 2011 and 2014, making 138 starts and scoring seven goals before moving on to West Ham for an initial £3.75 million.

That fee could ultimately rise to £7 million but with no clause relating to international appearances, which in any case usually only refer to competitive games.

All the top-ups are based on the former Tranmere defender’s Hammers appearances, the Blues having already received a substantial further sum with several of those milestones having been passed.

Meanwhile, current Blues left-back Jonas Knudsen was an unused sub as Denmark drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic in Mladá Boleslav.

There was a good chance he was going to get into the England Squad. Very strange decision not to have a clause for this in place.

I'm assuming we have a huge sell-on clause?

2 questions

1) How much have we made in add on s from the deal so far?

2) Will that money be included in Micks January transfer budget?

Regardless of cash, it's a great night for him.

Nice to know he enjoyed time with us before he moved onto bigger and better things.

Very sad that we have sunk so low that some consider West Ham to be bigger and better things!

@OldClactonBlue - West Ham have been 'bigger and better things' in comparison to us since about 1984, haven't they?

Anyway, seems Cresswell helped to shore up that England defence nicely and shut up shop. Well done.

Give it a few years and we may well be saying the same about Webster...

rinkydinkpanther. Can,t see how Cressy helped shore up the England defence, they were winning 2-0 when he came on.

I only saw the highlights. Terrible England giveaway. This is the trouble - he was caught upfield, lost the ball - and lo and behold the first Spanish goal came because they attacked the space he vacated. What was he doing upfield when we are two nil up against Spain reserves with a few minutes to go? Really poor England.
