Lawrence: Left-Sided Role Suits Me Perfectly
Friday, 18th Nov 2016 06:00

Tom Lawrence has nominated his current wide-left slot in the Town team as his favourite role.

The on-loan midfielder or attacker on a season-long loan from Premier League champions Leicester has also been utilised in a central position during the first few months of the current Championship season.

The Welsh international said: “I like playing on the left but obviously I’ll happily play wherever the gaffer wants me to play. But hopefully my performances have shown people that I like the role on the wing.

“I think my form’s been alright but as long as the team are winning and we’re doing well and performing well, that’s the main thing.

“In terms of how I’ve played in an Ipswich shirt, I’d like to think there is more to come from me. I’m happy so far and I just want to carry it on.

“The way we are playing at the moment, it suits me perfectly to be on the left. I’m enjoying it and I would say that’s my best position.”

Lawrence moved to Leicester from first club Manchester United in 2014, signing a four-year deal, but after just one start and three substitute appearances in his first season with the Foxes he was overlooked completely last term and his loan switch to Portman Road in the summer followed similar stints with Championship trio Rotherham, Blackburn and Cardiff.

So what does he think the future may hold and would he consider a permanent move to Suffolk? He is clearly highly-rated by boss Mick McCarthy, whose interest in him was triggered by a dazzling display for Yeovil, whom he joined on a three-month loan deal from United early in 2014, as Town won 1-0 at Huish Park in March that year.

Lawrence said: “It’s a long season yet so I can’t really say anything about that. I’m still a Leicester player but obviously I’ve got a job to do here and I’ll be working hard to do that. Let’s just wait and see what happens.

“My best mate at Leicester is Danny Drinkwater and he’s doing really well at the minute. We speak now and then. I was a bit younger than him when we were both at Manchester United so we didn’t play alongside each other there.”

He is pleased to see his parent club easing their way to the knockout stages of the Champions League and added: “They are surprising teams and if they can keep doing that who knows how far they can go?

“It looks as if the Champions League is a priority but I don’t think they would have looked at it like that. I think they are putting just as much effort into their league games but there are so many games and they’re not used to that.

“Last year they concentrated on the league and when they went out of the domestic cup competitions it was easier for them to do that.

“But I think adding the Champions League to the other competitions makes it hard on the lads.

“I haven’t managed to get up there to see any of the games so I’ve just watched them on television. But hopefully I’ll get up there and watch a couple later in the season.”

Asked if he was receiving feedback from Leicester, he said: “Not really, no. I haven’t heard much since I’ve been here so we’ll just have to wait and see how it goes.

“Do I still see a future there? I’ve still got a year and a half left on my contract so we’ll see what happens.”
