Ex-Blue Murphy Admits Injury Frustrations
Wednesday, 23rd Nov 2016 15:12

Former Town striker Daryl Murphy admits his time at Newcastle United has been frustrating up to now with a calf injury having limited his involvement to one first-team game in the EFL Cup.

However, the Irish international, who joined the Championship leaders from the Blues for £3 million a few days before the August transfer window closed, was back in scoring action for the Magpies’ U23s as they drew 1-1 with West Brom on Monday.

“It’s been very frustrating because when I signed here I was fully fit and ready,” Murphy told the Newcastle Chronicle.

“I played one game and then picked up an injury literally the next day. It has been very frustrating for me sitting in the stands and watching the lads do well.

“You want to be involved and help the team. But I’m on the comeback now so hopefully I can stay injury free.”

The 33-year-old says the 45 minutes he played for the U23s in front of manager Rafa Benitez will have benefited him: “I have been ready for the last week. I have trained with the lads.

“I just needed a few minutes under my belt to get rid of a few of the cobwebs. I have not played for a while but feel in good shape.

“I think the main thing was to get some game-time. I needed that, I haven’t played for quite a while but the goal was a little bonus.”

Murphy says he knows getting into the starting line-up will be tough with Newcastle top of the table having won nine in a row.

“It’s been brilliant and since I have come here there has been competition for places," he added.

“To see the lads doing so well is great. We’ve got so many players here the gaffer could choose from so many and it’s a good headache to have.”

Peter Beardsley, who coaches Newcastle’s U23s, was impressed with the ex-Town striker’s display.

”I think we played really well in the first half,” he told the Magpies official site. “Daryl Murphy scored a brilliant goal, and for him to get across the near post like that was good for our kids to see and a good experience for him.

"You can't teach what he does. It was great to have him playing for us, but the plan was for him to play 45 minutes, which was perfect for him.

"It's always nice to have them, and it was good for them to be there. It was a big plus for us."

Such a shame for Town that he left. We are really missing him at the moment.

I think he will struggle to get in the Newcastle team but nobody can blame him for wanting better football and a final big pay packet.

If I were Newcastle I would put him out on loan for a bit. Needs to go to a Championship team struggling for goals where he can be guaranteed game time.

12th man why the fook would you want him to rot. A pod servant for us and I don't blame him for one last big payday. Good luck to him I say

Safe to say if DM had faith in what Ipswich were doing then he would have stayed and had a final payday with us in the premiership. I think he jumped ship and who can blame him, many of the fans have jumped ship by the look of Saturday evening too!

Romford Blue as far as I'm concerned after signing a new contract here last year he decided the grass was greener the other side of the fence so I've got no sympathy for him.

I will also admit frustrations. My team sold their main striker for £3M and the man effectively replacing him on a free-transfer, Leon Best, hasn't done much or scored and now seems to have disappeared. I presume he is injured?! We badly need a physical presence to win a few headers and hassle defenders.

I feel for him, but I also hope he doesn't return on loan. We sold one of our own assets, so bringing him back on loan - someone else's player - is not a long term fix, nor good value for money. Evans must reinvest his fee and wages in permanent signings, something to build on for the future. Loans are no good.

So what 12th man? Like already pointed out he clearly felt we weren't going to get any better, and he was right. It was a strange move but a big pay rise so who can blame him. And he couldn't of been more loyal to us over the years, he signed 5 contracts with the club over a 6 year period.

Was a sad day when he left the club, but you can't deny Daryl a big move to Newcastle & especially at the age of 33. He's clearly been missed at Town & I very much doubt we will ever find a like for like replacement of his quality. With the squad that Newcastle have got I'd be very surprised if he'll get much game time in the league, let's just hope that Newcastle get promoted & then we will receive an extra 1 million. Hope you get back to full fitness Daryl & get yourself into the side & score goals like you did for Ipswich!

Hope works out for Murph great 👍 player but can't t see him playing ahead of Gayle and Mitrovic at the moment. Are his family still in Suffolk? Maybe we could get him on loan again !

Small fish in a big pond and unfortunately the best Daryl can hope for is a bit part role.
At least your bank manager will be pleased with the move :)
Once they get promoted he will be surplus to requirements.
