Town Draw Lincoln or Oldham at Home in FA Cup Third Round
Monday, 5th Dec 2016 19:14

Town have drawn Lincoln City or Oldham Athletic at home in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup. Third round ties will be played between January 6th and 9th.

The Imps, who are currently second in the Vanarama National League, host the Latics, who are second bottom of League One, in their second round tie at Sincil Bank in this evening's live BT Sport game (KO 7.45pm).

Town, who were ball number 20, were first out of the hat at this evening's draw, which was held at the BT Tower.

The Blues and Lincoln have never met in the FA Cup and last played one another in the league in Town's 1960/61 Division Two championship season when Sir Alf Ramsey's side ran out 3-1 winners at home and 4-1 away.

Oldham and the Blues have been paired with one another in the FA Cup in two previous seasons with Town the winners of third round ties on both occasions.

In the 1953/54 campaign Scott Duncan's side drew 3-3 at Portman Road, then won 1-0 at Boundary Park.

Ten years later, in January 1964, Town thrashed the Latics 6-3 at home with Gerry Baker netting a hat-trick, Danny Hegan two and Joe Broadfoot one.

Last season the Blues were beaten at the third round stage by League Two Portsmouth - featuring Adam Webster - after a replay.

Boss Mick McCarthy is yet to win an FA Cup tie as Blues manager. Town's last FA Cup win was the 2-1 victory at Blackpool at the third round stage in January 2010 under Roy Keane’s management.

Excellent! I like Lincoln, will be good to see them get to the fourth round.

We are not going to get promoted, so let's take the cup seriously, play a full strength side, attack Lincoln/Oldham, get the win, progress, and give the fans something to cheer about.

I get dismayed how Ipswich keep throwing the cup away for the sake of a promotion effort that never materialises. We might think "only Lincoln/Oldham so rest key players", but that attitude rubs off on the players effort and we could end up dumped out like against Stevenage.

Be difficult for even MM to pick a team to lose that. I'm sure he'll try tho. Will not be paying to watch that.

So then McCarthy will be fielding the under 12s for this one.

Surely we will win a game in the cup this year. If Dino doesn't fancy it, I am happy to manage the team for the day.

This game will mean nothing to Mick, he's slipped on so many banana skins it doesn't hurt any more, how else do you think he got a nose like that?

Why mark me down? The manager won't take it serious so what is the point of the cup for us?

Right then FA, get your act sorted out and impose fines and or points deductions on teams that treat the FA cup and supporters with contempt and field under strength teams. I've had enough of my team going out waving the white flag!

MM has no excuse this time. He's down-played the Cup every year but with no interest in the league likely he has to pick best team. Trouble is that he doesn't know what that is!!

Happy with the draw. Hope it's Lincoln as I haven't seen them play before. Wouldn't want a replay at Boundary Park though as it would snow & we'd lose by 4!!!

Dukey: you ask anyone from my dads generation about the point: huge day out at Wembley and a memory you'll never lose. For me, beating Blackburn in 1996 after shearer had said we were the easiest game there is (and wrighty's 10/10 until he evening star) do your homework and treasure the heritage of our club.

That's the point of the cup! Ever living in hope that we might have another run

WOW! Yet another stroke of fortune for our maligned Dino... although he himself in all likelihood, and as an customary with him when dealing with once proud-to-be-part-of big domestic cup tournaments, don't give a "flying fu@k" or a "monkey's as@"!!!

Well even so, I actually believe even Master Micks' worst coached, most hungover, most unmotivated and most skill-limited reserve-laden team of 'UNproper blokes' :-) might have a genuine chance here.... as t next to the offensive juggernaut known as North Ferriby United (National League), mighty Oldham Athletic is to my best recollection the LEAST scoring team outside the entire non-league tiers!!!
Rumor has it that not only are they factually almost unfathomable anemic up front (11 goals in 19 league games) but also apparently soooo strapped financially that they in principal couldn't even bribe themselves to more goals!!! :-) lol

Will put out our reserve team loose the game and then get mick telling us it's okay because we are focusing on doing really well in the league! Mick Out

Hopefully MM will be gone by then ( wishful thinking ) but i can hear his post match comments now, starting with, " there wasnt a lot in it, an evenly contested game in which they scored and we didnt"
